Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY.

BY THE END OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL KNOW:
- ATOMIC STRUCTURE, CHEMICAL BONDS,
- CHEMICAL PROPERTIES, THE REACTIVITY OF ELEMENTS AND MOLECULES, GASES, SOLIDS, LIQUIDS AND SOLUTIONS;
- THE MECHANISMS OF THE MAIN CHEMICAL REACTIONS;
- THE WEIGHT RELATIONSHIPS IN REACTIONS.

AT THE END OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- UNDERSTAND AND DESCRIBE THE COMPOSITION, STRUCTURE AND REACTIVITY OF MOLECULES;
- TRACE THE GEOMETRY AND NOMENCLATURE OF INORGANIC COMPOUNDS;
- BALANCE CHEMICAL REACTIONS FROM THE REACTANTS;
- PERFORM STOICHIOMETRIC CALCULATIONS USING THE CONCEPTS OF MOLE, CONCENTRATION, PH, AND SOLUBILITY;
- APPLY GENERAL PRINCIPLES GOVERNING THE EQUILIBRIUM OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS TO HOMOGENEOUS AND HETEROGENEOUS SYSTEMS.
Prerequisites
FUNDAMENTALS OF MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY ACQUIRED AT THE SECONDARY SCHOOL LEVEL.

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF LECTURES (60 HOURS), CLASSROOM EXERCISES (20 HOURS).
THE LECTURES WILL ENABLE THE STUDENT TO ACQUIRE THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF GENERAL CHEMISTRY.
DURING THE EXERCISES, THE STUDENT IS PROPOSED TO SOLVE PROBLEMS RELATED TO STOICHIOMETRY. THE SOLVING METHOD CONSISTS OF UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM, PLANNING THE SOLUTION, AND FINALLY SOLVING IT. THE LATTER STAGE PROMOTES THE ABILITY TO EVALUATE THE REASONABLENESS OF THE ANSWER AND TO CHECK CONSISTENCY WITH THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF CHEMISTRY.
PARTICIPATION IN FACE-TO-FACE TEACHING IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.
Verification of learning
THE EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN TEST PREPARATORY TO AN ORAL INTERVIEW.

THE WRITTEN TEST CONSISTS OF 5 EXERCISES AND PROPOSES TO THE STUDENT STECHYOMETRY EXERCISES ON: CALCULATIONS RELATING TO BALANCES OF MASS AND CHARGE IN REDOX REACTIONS; EVALUATION OF THE
COMPOSITION AT EQUILIBRIUM OF A MIXTURE
HOMOGENIC COMPOSITION OF COMPOSITES IN GASEOUS PHASE; PH ASSESSMENT OF AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS OF ACIDS AND BASES, OF A BUFFER SOLUTION; EVALUATION OF THE SOLUBILITY OF POORLY SOLUBLE SALTS;
EVALUATION OF THE MOLECULAR MASS OF NONVOLATILE SOLUTES IN DILUTE SOLUTIONS BY THE USE OF COLLIGATIVE PROPERTIES; DETERMINATION OF THE ELECTROMOTIVE FORCE OF A GALVANIC CELL AND DETERMINATION OF THE SPONTANEOUS DIRECTION OF THE REDOX REACTION FEEDING THEM. THE DURATION OF THE TEST IS AT LEAST ONE HOUR.
THE MINIMUM GRADE FOR PASSING THE WRITTEN TEST AND ACCESS TO THE ORAL TEST IS 18/30.

THE ORAL TEST WILL AIM TO FILL ANY GAPS FOUND IN THE WRITTEN TEST, AND TO TEST THE LEVEL OF
KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS GOVERNING CHEMICAL PROCESSES AND THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF MATTER.
THE ORAL TEST INCLUDES THE DISCUSSION OF APPLIED CASES TENDING TO VERIFY THE LEVEL REACHED BY THE STUDENT
IN THE ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE.
TWO PARTIAL TESTS CAN BE TAKEN DURING THE COURSE, AFTER HALF OF THE LECTURES AND AT THE END OF THE
SEMESTER. EACH TEST WILL WEIGH 50% ON THE OVERALL GRADE. IF THE OVERALL GRADE OF THE TWO TESTS
PARTIAL TESTS WILL BE HIGHER THAN 18/30 THE STUDENT MAY CONSIDER HIMSELF/HERSELF EXEMPT FROM THE WRITTEN TEST. THE EXEMPTION WILL BE VALID
ONLY FOR THE EXAMINATION SESSION FOLLOWING THE TEACHING SESSION.

THE FINAL GRADE, EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS WITH POSSIBLE HONORS, WILL DEPEND ON THE OVERALL MATURITY ACQUIRED ON THE
COURSE CONTENT.
IT WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT:
- THE QUALITY OF THE EXPOSITION, IN TERMS OF THE USE OF APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE
- OF THE ABILITY TO CROSS-CURRICULARLY CORRELATE THE DIFFERENT TOPICS OF THE COURSE AND, WHERE POSSIBLE, WITH OTHER DISCIPLINES
- OF THE AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT DEMONSTRATED.

THE MINIMUM VOTE FOR PASSING THE EXAMINATION OVERALL IS 18/30. HONORS MAY BE AWARDED TO STUDENTS WHO ACHIEVE THE MAXIMUM GRADE OF 30/30 AND DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO INDEPENDENTLY APPLY ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS EVEN IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED IN CLASS.
THE FINAL GRADE WILL RESULT FROM THE OVERALL EVALUATION OF BOTH TESTS, GIVING GREATER WEIGHT TO THE ORAL INTERVIEW.
