Objectives | |
---|---|
THE AIM OF THE TEACHING CLASS IS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE LANGUAGE AND BASIC CONCEPTS OF GENERAL CHEMISTRY. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: THE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO DESCRIBE THE PROPERTIES OF MATTER, THE ELECTRONIC STRUCTURE OF THE ATOMS AND THE MOLECULES, THE CHEMICAL BOND, THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF MOLECULAR STRUCTURES AND GEOMETRIES, THE PERIODIC TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS AND THE PERIODIC PROPERTIES. THEY WILL KNOW THE CHEMICAL TERMINOLOGY, CLASSIFICATION OF CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS , AND OF BALANCE OF THE CHEMICAL REACTIONS (ACID / BASE , REDOX ). THEY ALSO WILL KNOW THE PROPERTIES OF GAS , LIQUID AND SOLID AND THE INTERMOLECULAR FORCES . APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO USE CORRECTLY THE CHEMICAL LANGUAGE, THE EXPRESSIONS OF CONCENTRATION, THE BALANCE OF THE CHEMICAL REACTIONS (ACID / BASIC AND OXIDE / REDUCTIVE), AND THE STOICHIOMETRY. THEY WILL BE ABLE TO PREPARE A SOLUTION WITH DEFINED CONCENTRATION . |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
IT IS REQUIRED THE KNOWLEDGE OF BASIC MATH TOPICS COVERED IN HIGH SCHOOL. IN PARTICULAR, KNOWLEDGE OF ELEMENTARY ALGEBRA, METHODS FOR SOLVING EQUATIONS AND INEQUALITIES OF FIRST AND SECOND DEGREE, AND LOGARITHMS ARE REQUIRED |
Contents | |

SOLUTIONS (4 HOURS). CHEMICAL REACTIONS (4 HOURS). ACIDS, BASES AND SALTS (8 HOURS). ENERGY CHEMISTRY (4 HOURS). BALANCE. FUNDAMENTALS OF THERMODYNAMICS AND KINETICS (4 HOURS). ELECTROCHEMISTRY(2 HOURS). STOICHIOMETRY (6 HOURS): ATOM, ATOMIC MASS, MOLECULES, MOLECULAR MASS, IONIC COMPOUNDS, MASS FORMULA. FORMULA MINIMUM AND MOLECULAR FORMULA. ISOTOPIC COMPOSITION. THE MOLE. CHEMICAL EQUATIONS NOT REDOX, BALANCE. REDOX REACTIONS, BALANCE. WEIGHT RATIOS VOLUMETRIC AND REACTIONS. YIELD OF A REACTION . |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
THE COURSE INCLUDES THEORETICAL LESSONS AND CLASSROOM EXERCISES (6 CFU = 48 HOURS). AIM OF THE LECTURES IS TO EXPLAIN THE TOPICS OF THE TEACHING COURSE, FROM DEFINITIONS TO SPECIFIC CASES AND ANY EXCEPTIONS. DURING THE EXERCISES, PROBLEMS RELATED TO STOICHIOMETRY WILL BE SOLVED. THE ABILITY TO EVALUATE THE REASONABLENESS OF THE SOLUTIONS AND TO VERIFY THE CONSISTENCY WITH THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF CHEMISTRY WILL BE STIMULATED |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
ORAL EXAMINATION TO VERIFY THE KNOWLEDGE OF BASIC TOPICS COVERED DURING LESSONS SUCH AS ATOMIC STRUCTURE AND PERIODIC PROPERTIES, CHEMICAL BONDS AND RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE MOLECULAR CHARACTERISTICS AND THE CHEMICAL PHYSIC PROPERTIES, CLASSIFICATION OF SOLIDS, STATE DIAGRAMS AND PHASE TRANSITIONS, CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIA AND FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE CHEMICAL SYSTEMS AT EQUILIBRIUM, THE BASIC SCHEME OF A GALVANIC CELL. THE MINIMUM GRADE (18/30) INDICATES A SUFFICIENT UNDERSTANDING OF THE CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF THE ELEMENTS AND OF THE STRUCTURE OF MATTER AND/OR UNCERTAINTIES IN SOME OF THE DISCUSSED TOPICS. THE MAXIMUM GRADE (30/30) INDICATES THE DEEPENED KNOWLEDGE OF ALL THE ADDRESSED TOPICS AND EXCELLENT LANGUAGE SKILLS. THE HONORS WILL BE AWARDED TO THE STUDENT WHO PRESENTS THE TOPICS COVERED FULLY, IN AN ERROR-FREE AND EXCELLENT WAY. |
