Objectives
THE COURSE, CONSISTING OF LECTURE CLASS, AIMS TO GIVE KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROPERTIES OF ENZYMES, AND ON THEIR USE IN ORGANIC SYNTHESIS, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO APPLICATIONS IN ASYMMETRIC SYNTHESIS.
THE MAIN ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE WILL BE:
•KNOWLEDGE OF STRUCTURE, PROPERTIES AND MODE OF ACTION OF ENZYMES.
•MAIN STRATEGIES OF ASYMMETRIC SYNTHESIS EMPLOYED IN BIOCATALYSIS (KINETIC RESOLUTION, DESYMMETRIZATION, ENANTIOSELECTIVE TRANSFORMATION OF PROCHIRAL SUBSTRATES).
•KNOWLEDGE OF MAIN METHODS IN ORGANIC SYNTHESIS BASED ON THE USE OF ENZYMES.

THE MAIN SKILLS WILL BE:
•TO SOLVE PROBLEMS OF CHEMO- REGIO- AND ENANTIOSELECTIVE SYNTHESIS OF ORGANIC MOLECULES THROUGH BIOCATALYTIC METHODS.
Prerequisites
FUNDAMENTALS OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY I AND II.
Contents
•BASIC NOTIONS OF STEREOCHEMISTRY (7H).
•THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SYNTHESIS OF NON-RACEMIC PRODUCTS (1H).
•GENERAL ASPECTS OF THE ENZYMATIC CATALYSIS. MODES OF ACTION OF ENZYMES (16H).
•MECHANISM OF ACTION OF COENZYMES (12H).
•APPLICATION OF BIOCATALYSTS IN ASYMMETRIC SYNTHESIS: HYDROLYTIC RACTIONS, REDUCTIONS, OXIDATIONS, TRANSAMINATIONS, SPECIAL TECHNIQUES (12H).
Teaching Methods
THE TEACHING SHALL CONSIST OF 48 HOURS OF CLASSROOM LESSONS SUPPORTED BY PROJECTIONS. THE TEACHING MATERIAL (THE SLIDE-SHOW IN THE FORM OF PDF OR PPT FILE) WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE ATTENDING STUDENTS, AND TO STUDENTS WHO HAVE REQUESTED IT BY E-MAIL.
Verification of learning
THROUGH AN ORAL EXAMINATION, IT WILL BE ASSESSED THE STUDENT’S ABILITY TO DISCUSS, ORALLY AND THROUGH A RESEARCH PAPER, A SPECIFIC TOPIC OF BIOCATALYSIS PREVIOUSLY AGREED WITH THE TEACHER (AT LEAST A WEEK BEFORE THE ORAL ASSESSMENT).
IN ADDITION, THE UNDERSTANDING AND THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS TREATED THROUGHOUT THE COURSE WILL BE ASSESSED.
THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT, BASED ON THE DISCUSSION OF THE TOPIC REPORTED IN THE RESEARCH PAPER AND THE SUBJECTS OF THE ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS, WILL BE EVALUATED IN THIRTY.
