Objectives
The present course is aimed at obtaining knowledge and understanding of the source, biosynthetic approach and biological activity of secondary metabolites of vegetable origin , and of the quality control techniques of the herbal preparations, specifically focused on phytochemical analysis.

The student will know the main biosynthetic pathways leading to the production of secondary metabolites in medicinal, food, nutraceutical and cosmeceutical plants. In addition, he will know the specific activities related to the chemical class of the secondary metabolites most studied and applied for their bioactivity.

The student applying the acquired skills on chemistry and bioactivity of secondary metabolites from botanicals will have to be able to relate the structures and physico-chemical properties of the main groups of plant secondary metabolites to their biological properties. The student should be able to discuss some aspects of herbal preparations quality control mainly based on the application of advanced analytical techniques to phytochemical analysis.
Prerequisites
The acquisition of training objectives related to the following courses is recommended:
Organic chemistry, plant drugs and pharmacognosy.
IN ORDER TO HAVE ACCESS TO THE FINAL EXAM, THE STUDENT MUST HAVE PASSED the exam of general biology.

Teaching Methods
LECTURES, EVALUATION TEST.
DIDACTICAL FREQUENCE IS FOR 40 HOURS, CORRESPONDING TO 5 CFU.
NO MANDATORY ATTENDANCE.
Verification of learning
WRITTEN AND ORAL FINAL EXAMINATION.
WRITTEN EXAM IS BASED ON 3 OPEN QUESTIONS AND 21 QUIZ WITH MULTIPLE CHOICE. THE TIME GIVEN TO STUDENTS FOR THE WRITTEN EXAM WILL BE 90 MINUTES.
1 POINT WILL BE AWARDED TO ANY CORRECT QUIZ AND A MAXIMUM OF 3 POINTS WILL BE AWARDED FOR EACH OPEN QUESTION.

THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION WILL BE NECESSARY TO BE ADMITTED TO THE ORAL TEST, WHICH CONSISTS IN AN INTERVIEW TO FACE THE FULL KNOWLEDGE OF MATTER AND THE SPEAKING CAPACITY ON THE TOPICS OF THE SAME. THE EXAM WILL RUN DURING ABOUT 30 MINUTES AND THE COMMISSION EVALUATION WILL BE EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETH.
FINAL EVALUATION WILL BE BASED ON THE RESULTS OBTAINED IN THE TWO EXAMS.
