TEACHING GOALS
THE COURSE DEALS WITH TOPICS RELATED TO SPATIAL (BIG) DATA AND GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION. THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH FOUNDATIONS TO BE ABLE TO DEAL WITH THE STUDY, DESIGN, AND DEVELOPMENT OF GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS IN DIFFERENT DOMAINS, FROM CULTURAL HERITAGE TO THE ENVIRONMENT, FROM HEALTH TO LAND MANAGEMENT.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE METHODS AND TECHNIQUES FOR THE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE FOLLOWING TOPICS: REQUIREMENTS ANALYSIS AND DATA COLLECTION, DATA MODELS, GEOREFERENCED DATA STRUCTURE, GEOGRAPHIC DATABASES, DATA QUERIES AND FUNCTIONS OF SPATIAL ANALYSIS, INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS AND SPATIAL METADATA, VISUALIZATION AND USER INTERACTION.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
USE SOFTWARE TOOLS (QGIS, LEAFLET, SPATIAL NEO4J, GEE),
APPLY METHODOLOGIES TO ANALYSE, DESIGN AND QUERY SPATIAL DATABASES ABOUT SEVERAL DOMAINS OF INTEREST,
PERFORM MULTI-SCALE ANALYSES,
DESIGN CUSTOMIZED INTERFACES FOR GIS.

AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO INDEPENDENTLY ORGANIZE METADATA AND MULTI-SOURCE GEOSPATIAL DATA RELATING TO DIFFERENT DOMAINS.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO DESCRIBE IN A STRUCTURED AND EFFECTIVE WAY THE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS WITH THEIR RELATIONSHIPS, PRESENT IN A DOMAIN OF INTEREST OR IN A SCENARIO

LEARNING ABILITY
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO MODEL REALITIES OF INTEREST OF SCALABLE COMPLEXITY ALSO BY USING METHODS AND TOOLS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE USED IN THE COURSE.
Prerequisites
DATABASES, SOFTWARE ENGINEERING, OBJECT-ORIENTED PARADIGM AND A PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE ARE CONSIDERED PREPARATORY COURSES.
Contents
THE COURSE INCLUDES LECTURES AND LABORATORY GUIDED ACTIVITIES DURING WHICH STUDENTS DIRECTLY STUDY, BY USING A SOFTWARE, WHAT THE TEACHER INTRODUCES DURING THE LESSONS (WITH A LEARNING-BY-DOING APPROACH).
TOPICS OF THE LECTURES ARE:
-NEEDS ASSESSMENT AND DATA COLLECTION FOR GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (4H)
-DATA MODELS PER SPATIAL DATA MANAGEMENT (6H)
-GEOREFERENCED DATA STRUCTURES (4H)
-GEOGRAPHIC DATABASES (6H)
-OPEN DATA AND LINKED OPEN DATA (4H)
-GEOGRAPHIC QUERY AND ANALYSIS (12H)
-VISUALIZATION AND USER INTERACTION (12H)

LABORATORY ACTIVITIES ARE: CASE STUDIES OF DIFFERENT APPLICATIONS, DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS PROVIDING CUSTOMIZED FUNCTIONALITY AND INTERFACES.
Teaching Methods
TEACHING INCLUDES 48 HOURS OF LECTURES AND EXERCISES (6 CFUS). IN PARTICULAR, 24 HOURS OF LECTURES (3 CFUS) AND 24 HOURS OF GUIDED LABORATORY EXERCISES (3 CFUS) ARE PROVIDED.
LECTURES AND EXERCISES ARE COMPLEMENTED BY SEMINARS CONDUCTED BY EXPERTS AND PROFESSIONALS IN THE GEO-ICT FIELD INVITED TO RELATE ON TOPICS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST AND TO PRESENT INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS. LABORATORY ACTIVITIES ARE ALSO USED FOR ANALYSIS OF CASE STUDIES AND FOR THE REALIZATION OF A PROJECT. THE USE OF AN OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE ALLOWS STUDENTS TO WORK BEYOND THE TIME OF ACCESS TO THE LABORATORY FOR INDIVIDUAL TUTORIALS.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EVALUATION EXAM. THE EXAM CONSISTS IN THE DEFENCE OF A GIVEN PROFESSIONAL PROJECT IMPLEMENTED BY A TEAM OF STUDENTS, AND AN ORAL EXAM. THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PROJECT IS PRELIMINARY TO THE ORAL TEST AND ITS GOAL IS TO IMPLEMENT AN APPLICATION FOR GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS. ORAL EXAMINATION IS MEANT TO EVALUATE THE PROJECT AND TO ASSESS THE GAINED KNOWLEDGE. THE EVALUATION CRITERIA INCLUDE THE COMPLETENESS AND THE CORRECTNESS OF THE PROJECT DOCUMENTATION, OF THE REALIZED ARTEFACTS, TOGETHER WITH THE FLUENCY AND THE CLARITY OF PRESENTATION OF THE COURSE CONTENTS.
THE RESULT OF THE ORAL EXAM AND THE PROJECT DISCUSSION CONTRIBUTE TO THE FORMULATION OF FINAL VOTE WITH WEIGHT OF APPROXIMATELY 40% AND 60% RESPECTIVELY.
