TEACHING GOAL THE COURSE DEALS WITH TOPICS RELATED TO SPATIAL (BIG) DATA AND GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION. THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH FOUNDATIONS TO BE ABLE TO DEAL WITH THE STUDY, DESIGN, AND DEVELOPMENT OF GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS IN DIFFERENT DOMAINS, FROM CULTURAL HERITAGE TO THE ENVIRONMENT, FROM HEALTH TO LAND MANAGEMENT. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES TO ACQUIRE, MANAGE AND REPRESENT SPATIAL DATA AS A WHOLE, FROM MULTI-SOURCE ACQUISITION TO GEOREFERENCING, FROM MODELING (RASTER AND VECTOR) IN INFORMATION LAYERS AND GEODATABASES TO QUERIES AND SPATIAL ANALYSIS FUNCTIONS TO EXTRACT KNOWLEDGE AND CREATE THEMATIC CARTOGRAPHY. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: USE SOFTWARE TOOLS (QGIS, LEAFLET, SPATIAL NEO4J, GEE), USE SOFTWARE TOOLS TO CREATE FRONT-END (WEB) APPLICATIONS USE SOFTWARE TOOLS FOR EARTH OBSERVATION FROM SATELLITES AND IN SITU USE WEB GEOSERVICE AND GEOAPI TO CREATE GEOPORTALS AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO INDEPENDENTLY USE TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT OF METADATA AND MULTI-SOURCE GEOSPATIAL DATA RELATING TO DIFFERENT DOMAINS. COMMUNICATION SKILLS THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO DESCRIBE IN A STRUCTURED AND EFFECTIVE WAY THE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS WITH THEIR RELATIONSHIPS, PRESENT IN A REALITY OF INTEREST OR IN A STUDY SCENARIO LEARNING ABILITY THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO MODEL REALITIES OF INTEREST OF SCALABLE COMPLEXITY ALSO USING METHODS AND TOOLS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE USED IN THE COURSE. |

THE COURSE INCLUDES BOTH LECTURES AND GUIDED EXERCISES IN THE LABORATORY, DURING WHICH THE STUDENTS DIRECTLY VERIFY, BY USING A SOFTWARE, WHAT THE TEACHER INTRODUCES DURING THE LESSON (WITH A LEARNING-BY-DOING APPROACH). THE TOPICS COVERED AS CLASSES ARE: INTRODUCTION TO SPATIAL DATA AND GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION (2H) DATA STRUCTURES AND MAIN FORMATS (4H) CARTOGRAPHY: DATUM, PROJECTION SYSTEMS AND REFERENCE SYSTEMS (2H) OPERATORS FOR RASTER DATA AND VECTOR DATA (4H) SPATIAL ANALYSIS (4H) WEB GIS AND WEB GEOSERVICES (2H) THE TOPICS ADDRESSED AS LABORATORY ACTIVITIES ARE: OVERVIEW OF THE MAIN CLIENT-SIDE WEBGIS TECHNOLOGIES (LEAFLET, GOOGLE MAPS API, GOOGLE EARTH ENGINE) (8H) OPEN GEODATA (2H) TECHNOLOGIES FOR EARTH OBSERVATION - THE COPERNICUS PROGRAM (4H) OGC (OPEN GEOSPATIAL CONSORTIUM) SERVICES: WMS, WFS, WCS, WPS, GEOAPI (4H) USING GEOGRAPHIC DATA LIBRARIES IN PYTHON (8H) GEODATABASES (4H) |
Teaching Methods | |

TEACHING INCLUDES 48 HOURS OF LECTURES AND EXERCISES (6 CFU). IN PARTICULAR, 24 HOURS OF LECTURES (3 CFU) AND 24 HOURS OF GUIDED LABORATORY EXERCISES (3 CFUS) ARE PROVIDED. LECTURES AND EXERCISES ARE COMPLEMENTED BY CASE STUDIES ANALYSIS CONCERNING TOPICS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST AND BASED ON INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS. LABORATORY ACTIVITIES ARE USED TO REALIZE A PROJECT. THE USE OF AN OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE ALLOWS STUDENTS TO WORK BEYOND THE TIME OF ACCESS TO THE LABORATORY FOR INDIVIDUAL TUTORIALS. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EVALUATION EXAM. THE EXAM CONSISTS IN THE DEFENCE OF A GIVEN PROFESSIONAL PROJECT IMPLEMENTED BY A TEAM OF STUDENTS, AND AN ORAL EXAM. THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PROJECT IS PRELIMINARY TO THE ORAL TEST AND ITS GOAL IS TO IMPLEMENT AN APPLICATION TO MANAGE GEOSPATIAL DATA. ORAL EXAMINATION IS MEANT TO EVALUATE THE PROJECT AND TO ASSESS THE GAINED KNOWLEDGE. THE EVALUATION CRITERIA INCLUDE THE COMPLETENESS AND THE CORRECTNESS OF THE PROJECT DOCUMENTATION, OF THE REALIZED ARTEFACTS, TOGETHER WITH THE FLUENCY AND THE CLARITY OF PRESENTATION OF THE COURSE CONTENTS. THE RESULT OF THE ORAL EXAM AND THE PROJECT DISCUSSION CONTRIBUTE TO THE FORMULATION OF FINAL VOTE WITH WEIGHT OF APPROXIMATELY 40% AND 60% RESPECTIVELY. |
