Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE AN ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE OF DRUGS ACTING ON DIFFERENT SYSTEMS (CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM, AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM, CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM, GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEM, ENDOCRINE AND METABOLIC DISORDERS). MECHANISMS OF ACTION, DRUG-TARGET INTERACTIONS, STRUCTURE ACTIVITY RELATIONSHIPS, SIGNAL TRANSDUCTION AND OTHER ISSUES, INCLUDING DRUG METABOLISM, RELATED TO THE PHARMACOLOGY OF THE DRUGS AND THEIR CLINICAL USE WILL BE DISCUSSED. THE STUDENT WILL LEARN HOW TO ANALYZE DRUG METABOLISM AND SUGGEST POSSIBLE STRUCTURAL MODIFICATIONS THAT COULD LEAD TO IMPROVED THERAPEUTIC PROFILE. SYNTHETIC PATHWAYS WILL ALSO BE DISCUSSED IN DETAILS.
Prerequisites
IN ADDITION TO ALL THE COURSES OF THE 2ND YEAR, IT IS ALSO REQUIRED TO KNOW THE BASICS OF INTRODUCTIVE MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY, MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY I.

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE WILL INCLUDE LECTURES AND IN-CLASS DISCUSSIONS OF PRIMARY LITERATURE FOR A TOTAL OF 80 HOURS (10 CFU = 10 ECTS).
Verification of learning
THE FINAL EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF TWO PARTS: A ONE-HOUR WRITTEN EXAMINATION CONSISTING OF 3 EXERCISES (10 POINT EACH) EACH ONE CONTAINING QUESTIONS RELATED TO ONE OF THE TOPICS TAUGHT DURING THE COURSE; AND AN ORAL EXAMINATION CONSISTING OF IN-DEPTH QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION OF THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE COURSE.
TO BE ADMITTED TO THE ORAL PART, THE STUDENT SHOULD DEMONSTRATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS OF ALL THREE EXERCISES AND OBTAIN A SCORE OF AT LEAST 18/30.
TEXTBOOKS, HANDOUTS, STUDENT'S OWN NOTES AS WELL AS ELECTRONIC DEVICES SUCH AS LAPTOPS, TABLETS OR SMARTPHONES ARE NOT PERMITTED DURING THE EXAMINATION. TO PASS THE EXAMINATION, BOTH PARTS MUST BE SUFFICIENT (MARK 18/30); THE FINAL MARK IS THE ARITHMETIC MEAN OF THE TWO MARKS.
