EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES AND SKILLS TO BE ACQUIRED. TO LEARN THE METHODS FOR MANAGING RIVERS AND COASTS BY INTEGRATING THE OBJECTIVES OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY AND RISK MITIGATION. TO UNDERSTAND THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE WATER AND SEDIMENT FLUXES AND HOW THESE ELEMENTS CONTRIBUTE TO THE BALANCE OF THE RIVER-COAST CONTINUUM. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING. ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE RELATED TO HYDRAULIC RISK MITIGATION AND THE PROTECTION AND REQUALIFICATION OF THE RIVER AND COASTAL ENVIRONMENT. ACQUIRE THE KNOWLEDGE NECESSARY TO UNDERSTAND THE HYDRO-MORPHODYNAMIC PROCESSES OF RIVERS AND COASTS. KNOW THE MANAGEMENT APPROACHES AIMED AT RESTORING THE HYDRO-MORPHODYNAMIC BALANCE AND ACHIEVING THE ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY STANDARDS REQUIRED BY CURRENT LEGISLATION. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING. KNOWING HOW TO IDENTIFY THE PROBLEMS OF A PARTICULAR RIVER AND COASTAL HABITAT, ESTIMATING THEIR POSSIBLE EVOLUTIONARY TRENDS, DEFINING THE MOST APPROPRIATE MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES TO COMBINE THE OBJECTIVE OF RESILIENCE TO HYDRAULIC RISK WITH THAT OF HIGH ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY. JUDGMENT AUTONOMY. ABILITY TO IDENTIFY THE MOST APPROPRIATE METHODS FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF RIVERS AND COASTS. COMMUNICATION SKILLS. KNOWING HOW TO WORK IN A TEAM AND PRESENT ORALLY AND GRAPHICALLY THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE COURSE. ABILITY TO LEARN. KNOWING HOW TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED TO DIFFERENT CONTEXTS. KNOWING HOW TO GAIN FURTHER INFORMATION AND UPDATES ON THE SUBJECT BY SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE. |

RIVER MANAGEMENT (9 HOURS LESSONS, 13 HOURS EXERCISE, 5 HOURS LABORATORY AND FIELD ACTIVITIES):: - STREAM CORRIDOR CHARACTERIZATION, SPATIAL AND TIME SCALES - ELEMENTS OF STREAM ECOLOGY, THE RIVER CONTINUUM CONCEPT - ECOLOGICAL STATUS OF RIVERS, BIOLOGICAL, PHYSICAL, CHEMICAL AND HYDRO-MORPHOLOGICAL QUALITY, WATER FRAME DIRECTIVE 200/60/CE - FLOOD RISK, FLOOD DIRECTIVE 2007/60/CE - EQUILIBRIUM OF ALLUVIAL CHANNELS -SEDIMENT TRANSPORT -NATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC DISTURBANCES AFFECTING STREAM CORRIDORS - IDENTIFICATION OF MEASURES FOR RIVER RESTORATION MODULE 2. COASTAL PROCESSES (13 HOURS LESSONS, 12 HOURS EXERCISE, 5 HOURS LABORATORY AND FIELD ACTIVITIES): - WAVE BREAKING: TYPE OF BREAKERS, IRRIBARREN PARAMETER. - SEDIMENT BALANCE, SEDIMENT CELL. LONGSHORE AND CROSSHORE MOVEMENT. LONGSHORE:GODA, KAMPHUIS, AND OTHER FORMULAS. CROSSHORE: BASIC PRINCIPLES; MODELS. EXAMPLES: XBEACH, SBEACH – RECALLING BASIC PRINCIPLES OF SET-UPAND LONGSHORE CURRENTS. - WAVE CLIMATE AND ITS EFFECTS ON EROSION AND SEDIMENT BALANCE. FALL VELOCITY, EFFECTS ON EROSION. LARSON AND KRAUS 1988). - APPLICATIONS: SEDIMENT BALANCE FOR SPECIFIC TEST CASES: BAY OF SALERNO, TYRREHNIAN COASTS OF CALABRIA, BEACHES IN APULIA |

AFTER THE INTRODUCTION OF THE DIFFERENT THEMES BY THE TEACHERS (LECTURES 2.5 CFU), THE STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP AN INDIVIDUAL CASE STUDY (EXERCISES 2.5 CFU). THE COMBINATION OF THESE TWO ACTIVITIES WILL MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO UNDERSTAND AND PUT INTO PRACTICE THE CONTENTS OF THE COURSE. TO THIS IS ADDED A LABORATORY ACTIVITY (LABORATORY EXPERIENCES 0.5 CFU) TO OBSERVE AND MEASURE SOME OF THE PHENOMENA STUDIED. FINALLY, TECHNICAL FIELD VISITS WILL BE CARRIED OUT TO OBSERVE CONCRETE EXAMPLES OF THE ENVIRONMENTS AND MANAGEMENT PRACTICES STUDIED (TECHNICAL VISITS 0.5 CFU). |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE FINAL EXAMS WILL ASSESS THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE FOLLOWING RESULTS: -UNDERSTANDING OF THE DISTURBANCES AFFECTING THE QUALITY OF RIVER AND COASTAL ENVIRONMENTS -KNOWLEDGE AND QUANTITATIVE ESTIMATION OF RIVER AND COASTAL MORPHOLOGICAL EVOLUTION; - KNOWLEDGE OF THE LEGISLATIVE FRAMEWORK; - CAPACITY OF CHOOSING THE BEST MANAGEMENT APPROACH THE ASSESSMENT OF WILL BE PERFORMED THROUGH AN ORAL INTERVIEW. THE STUDENTS WILL BE INVITED TO PRESENT, WITH THE SUPPORT OF SLIDES OR OTHER COMMUNICATION METHODS, THE INDIVIDUAL STUDY CASE DEVELOPED IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE TEACHING. THE FINAL EVALUATION WILL DEPEND ON THE DEGREE OF ACHIEVEMENT OF THE EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES. FOR THE EVALUATION WITH HONORS, THE TEACHERS WILL TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION: THE QUALITY OF THE EXPOSITION, THE ABILITY TO CROSS-CORRELATE THE DIFFERENT TOPICS OF THE COURSE AND THE AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT. |
