Objectives | |

The course is aimed at the acquisition of knowledge and understanding of classification, nomenclature, structure, properties, reactivity and synthesis of the main heterocyclic compounds. The student applying the acquired skills should be able to discuss the structure and properties of heterocycles and analyze the synthetic methods of the most important heterocyclic rings of biological interest. |

INTRODUCTION, DEFINITION OF TERMS AND CLASSIFICATION OF THE MAJOR CLASSES OF HETEROCYCLIC COMPOUNDS. SYSTEMATIC NOMENCLATURE OF HETEROCYCLIC COMPOUNDS. SYNTHESIS AND MODIFICATION OF HEREOCYCLIC RINGS, EXAMPLES OF COMMONLY USED STRATEGIES FOR HETEROCYCLE SYNTHESIS. STRUCTURE, GENERAL PROPERTIES AND CHEMICAL REACTIVITY OF HETEROCYCLIC COMPOUNDS. GENERAL METHODS USED FOR THE SYNTHESIS OF HETEROCYCLES. THE HETEROCYCLES WILL BE CONSIDERED ARE: THREE-MEMBERED HETEROCYCLES: STRUCTURE, PREPARATION AND REACTIONS. FOUR-MEMBERED HETEROCYCLES: STRUCTURE, PREPARATION AND REACTIONS. FIVE-MEMBERED HETEROCYCLES AND THEIR BENZOCONDENSED ANALOGS: STRUCTURE, PREPARATION AND REACTIONS. SIX-MEMBERED HETEROCYCLE THEIR BENZOCONDENSED ANALOGS: STRUCTURE, PREPARATION AND REACTIONS. 1,2-AZOLES, 1,3-AZOLES PURINES AND PYRIMIDINES EXAMPLES OF HETEROCYCLIC COMPOUNDS IN NATURE, ORGANIC AND MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY. |

THE COURSE INCLUDES 40 HOURS (5 CFU) OF FRONTAL LESSONS. THE FREQUENCY OF LESSONS IS MANDATORY. IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO TAKE THE FINAL EXAM, THE STUDENT MUST HAVE ATTENDED AT LEAST 70% OF THE TEACHING HOURS. |
Verification of learning | |

THE FINAL PREPARATION ASSESSMENT IS CERTIFIED BY AN EVALUATION RANGING FROM 18 TO 30 AND LIES IN A WRITTEN AND AN ORAL TEST. THE WRITTEN EXAM IS PREPARATORY TO THE ORAL TEST AND CONSISTS IN A TEST CONCERNING THE PROGRAM OF TEACHING. THE WRITING TEST WILL LAST FOR TWO HOURS AND CONSISTS OF NOMENCLATURE EXERCISES, EXERCISES ON REACTIVITY, SYNTHESIS, REACTION MECHANISMS AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF HETEROCYCLIC COMPOUNDS. THE ORAL TEST CONSISTS IN A DISCUSSION ON THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS INDICATED IN THE PROGRAM OF TEACHING AND IS FINALIZED TO ASSESS THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND COMPRESSION REACHED BY THE STUDENT, AND TO CHECK THE EXPOSURE CAPACITY, THE CAPACITY TO EXPLAIN AND TO ELABORATE SOLUTIONS INDEPENDENTLY. |
