ACQUISITION OF KNOWLEDGE OF CHEMICAL PROPERTIES AND REACTIVITY OF MAJOR CLASSES OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS. UNDERSTANDING AND DESCRIPTION OF THE STRUCTURAL AND FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS WITH REGARD TO THE STEREOCHEMISTRY OF MOLECULES. ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND AND DESCRIBE THE STRUCTURE, CHEMICAL PROPERTIES AND REACTIVITY OF MAJOR PLANT-BASED METABOLITES WITH REFERENCE TO THEIR FUNCTION IN BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS. |

THE COURSE IS SUPPLEMENTED BY TWO MODULES: THE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY MODULE AND NATURAL PRODUCTS WITH HERBAL INTEREST, THE FIRST IS 48 HOURS LONG (6 CFU) AND THE SECOND IS 24 HOURS LONG (3 CFU). THE TOPICS COVERED IN THE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY MODULE ARE: SECTION 1 - (1CFU, 8 H): INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY (2 H). CHEMICAL BONDING AND STRUCTURE OF ORGANIC MOLECULES (2 H). IUPAC NOMENCLATURE (2 H). STEREOCHEMISTRY (2 H). SECTION 2 - (2 CFU, 16 H): STRUCTURE, PROPERTIES, AND REACTIVITY OF THE MAJOR CLASSES OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS (2 H): ALKANES AND CYCLOALKANES (4 H), ALKENES (2 H), ALKYNES (2 H), HALOGENATED ORGANIC COMPOUNDS (2 H), AROMATIC COMPOUNDS (2 H), ALCOHOLS (2 H). SECTION 3 - (2 CFU, 16 H): STRUCTURE, PROPERTIES, AND REACTIVITY OF THE MAJOR CLASSES OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS (2 H): PHENOLS (2 H) AND ETHERS (2 H), CARBONYL COMPOUNDS (3 H), CARBOXYLIC ACIDS AND FUNCTIONAL DERIVATIVES (3 H), AMINES (2 H), HETEROCYCLIC COMPOUNDS (2 H). SECTION 4 - (1CFU, 8 H): IN THE STUDY OF ORGANIC REACTIONS GREAT EMPHASIS WILL BE GIVEN TO THE STUDY OF THE MAIN REACTION MECHANISMS. THE TOPICS COVERED IN THE NATURAL PRODUCTS WITH HERBAL INTEREST MODULE ARE: SECTION 1 - (1 CFU, 8 H): INTRODUCTION TO THE NATURAL ORGANIC PRODUCTS, PRIMARY AND SECONDARY METABOLISM SECTION 2 - (2 CFU, 16 H) STUDY OF THE MAIN CLASSES OF ORGANIC BIOMOLECULES (3 H): CARBOHYDRATES (3 H) AMINO ACIDS AND PROTEINS (2 H) LIPIDS (2 H) NUCLEIC ACIDS (2 H) MAJOR CLASSES OF SECONDARY METABOLITES (4 H) |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
TEACHING, DIVIDED INTO TWO MODULES, PROVIDES 72 HOURS OF ASSISTED TEACHING (9 CFU) DIVIDED INTO HOURS OF FRONTAL LESSONS AND HOURS OF GUIDED CLASSROOM EXERCISES. IN PARTICULAR, 48 HOURS (6CFU) ARE RELATE TO THE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY MODULE, AND 24 HOURS (3 CFU) RELATE TO THE NATURAL PRODUCTS WITH HERBAL INTEREST MODULE. DURING THE EXERCISES, THE STUDENTS CHECK DIRECTLY WHAT THE TEACHER INTRODUCES DURING THE LESSON. THE FREQUENCY OF TEACHING HAS TO BE CONSIDERED MANDATORY AND ACCESS TO THE FINAL EXAM REQUIRES THE ATTENDANCE OF AT LEAST 70% OF THE LESSONS AND EXERCISES. THE PROCEDURES FOR VERIFYING THE ATTENDANCE OF THE COURSE WILL BE COMMUNICATED TO THE STUDENTS BY THE TEACHER. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE TEACHING IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING A FINAL EXAMINATION. IN PARTICULAR, THE EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL EXAM. THE WRITTEN TEST (2 HOURS) IS PREPARATORY TO THE ORAL EXAMINATION AND IS FINALIZED TO VERIFY THE ABILITY TO CORRECTLY APPLY THE THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE, THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THE PROPOSED PROBLEMS. IT GENERALLY INCLUDES EXERCISES BASED ON IUPAC NOMENCLATURE, STEREOCHEMISTRY, FUNCTIONAL GROUP REACTIONS, REACTION MECHANISMS AND OPEN QUESTIONS ON THE TOPICS COVERED. THE ORAL EXAM CONSISTS OF AN INTERVIEW (ABOUT 30 MINUTES) WITH QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ON THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS OF THE TEACHING PROGRAM AND IS INTENDED TO ASCERTAIN THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT, AS WELL AS TO VERIFY THE EXPOSURE CAPACITY USING THE APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY AND THE ABILITY TO AUTONOMOUSLY ORGANIZE THE EXHIBITION ON THE SAME SUBJECTS WITH THEORETICAL CONTENT. THE MINIMUM VOTE FOR PASSING THE EXAM IS 18/30. “30 CUM LAUDE" MAY BE GIVEN TO STUDENTS WHO REACH THE MAXIMUM RATING OF 30/30 AND DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO APPLY THEIR OWN KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED IN LESSONS. |
