THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE INFORMATION NECESSARY FOR THE ACQUISITION OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE NOMENCLATURE RULES AND OF THE CHEMICAL-PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE MAIN FUNCTIONAL GROUPS OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS, OF THE STEREOCHEMICAL ASPECTS OF ORGANIC MOLECULES, OF THE REACTIVITY OF THE MAIN CLASSES OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS AND OF REACTION MECHANISMS. AT THE END OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL KNOW: -THE RULES FOR THE IUPAC NOMENCLATURE OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS -THE PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF THE MAIN CLASSES OF ORGANIC MOLECULES -THE REACTIVITY OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS -THE STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS WITH REFERENCE TO THE STEREOCHEMISTRY OF THE MOLECULES -THE MOST COMMON REACTION MECHANISMS. BY APPLYING THE SKILLS ACQUIRED, THE STUDENT MUST BE ABLE TO: -APPLY THE NOMENCLATURE RULES -RECOGNIZE THE STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS AND REACTIVITY OF THE MAIN CLASSES OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS -CRITICALLY DISCUSS THE MECHANISM OF REACTIONS -SOLVING PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE SYNTHESIS OF ORGANIC MOLECULES. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
THE FOLLOWING EXAMINATION PREREQUISITES MUST BE RESPECTED: GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY |
Contents | |
---|---|
THE COURSE (6 CFU) IS 48 HOURS LONG. THE TOPICS COVERED IN THE COURSE OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY ARE: SECTION 1 - (1 CFU; 8H): THE CHEMICAL BONDING AND STRUCTURE OF ORGANIC MOLECULES. IUPAC NOMENCLATURE. STEREOCHEMISTRY. SECTION 2 - (2 CFU; 16H): STRUCTURE, PROPERTIES, AND REACTIVITY OF THE MAJOR CLASSES OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS: ALKANES AND CYCLOALKANES, ALKENES, ALKYNES, HALOGENATED ORGANIC COMPOUNDS, AROMATIC COMPOUNDS, ALCOHOLS. SECTION 3 - (2 CFU; 16H): STRUCTURE, PROPERTIES, AND REACTIVITY OF THE MAJOR CLASSES OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS: PHENOLS AND ETHERS, CARBONYL COMPOUNDS, CARBOXYLIC ACIDS AND FUNCTIONAL DERIVATIVES, AMINES. STUDY OF THE MAIN CLASSES OF ORGANIC BIOMOLECULES: CARBOHYDRATES, LIPIDS AND PROTEINS. SECTION 4 - (1CFU; 8H): IN THE STUDY OF ORGANIC REACTIONS GREAT EMPHASIS WILL BE GIVEN TO THE STUDY OF THE MAIN REACTION MECHANISMS. |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
THE COURSE PROVIDES 48 HOURS OF ASSISTED TEACHING (6 CFU) DIVIDED INTO HOURS OF FRONTAL LESSONS AND HOURS OF GUIDED CLASSROOM EXERCISES. DURING THE EXERCISES, THE STUDENTS CHECK DIRECTLY WHAT THE TEACHER INTRODUCES DURING THE LESSON. THE FREQUENCY OF TEACHING HAS TO BE CONSIDERED MANDATORY AND ACCESS TO THE FINAL EXAM REQUIRES THE ATTENDANCE OF AT LEAST 70% OF THE LESSONS AND EXERCISES. THE PROCEDURES FOR VERIFYING THE ATTENDANCE OF THE COURSE WILL BE COMMUNICATED TO THE STUDENTS BY THE TEACHER. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE TEACHING IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING A FINAL EXAMINATION. IN PARTICULAR, THE EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL EXAM. THE WRITTEN TEST (2 HOURS) IS PREPARATORY TO THE ORAL EXAMINATION AND IS FINALIZED TO VERIFY THE ABILITY TO CORRECTLY APPLY THE THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE, THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THE PROPOSED PROBLEMS. IT GENERALLY INCLUDES EXERCISES BASED ON IUPAC NOMENCLATURE, STEREOCHEMISTRY, FUNCTIONAL GROUP REACTIONS, REACTION MECHANISMS AND OPEN QUESTIONS ON THE TOPICS COVERED. THE ORAL EXAM CONSISTS OF AN INTERVIEW (ABOUT 30 MINUTES) WITH QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ON THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS OF THE TEACHING PROGRAM AND IS INTENDED TO ASCERTAIN THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT, AS WELL AS TO VERIFY THE EXPOSURE CAPACITY USING THE APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY AND THE ABILITY TO AUTONOMOUSLY ORGANIZE THE EXHIBITION ON THE SAME SUBJECTS WITH THEORETICAL CONTENT. THE MINIMUM VOTE FOR PASSING THE EXAM IS 18/30. “30 CUM LAUDE" MAY BE GIVEN TO STUDENTS WHO REACH THE MAXIMUM RATING OF 30/30 AND DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO APPLY THEIR OWN KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED IN LESSONS. |
