THE CLASS IS AIMED TO GIVE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE MAIN TECHNIQUES IN THE QUALITY CONTROL OF GALENIC FORMULAS. THE CLASS PURPOSE IS TO EXAMINE IN DEPTH THE THEORY AND APPLICATION OF INSTRUMENTAL TECHNIQUES USEFUL FOR THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE MAIN COMPONENTS OF GALENIC FORMULAS. AT THE END OF THE CLASS STUDENTS WILL GAIN KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF: -THEORETICAL AND APPLICATION ASPECTS OF UV/VIS, IR AND NMR SPECTROSCOPY AND MASS SPECTROMETRY (MS) -COUPLING BETWEEN CHROMATOGRAPHY AND MASS SPECTROMETRY: GC/MS AND HPLC/MS -QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE APPROACHES IN THE ANALYSIS OF GALENIC FORMULAS. AT THE END OF THE CLASS STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: -FACE AND SOLVE ANALYTICAL PROBLEMS IN THE QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE EVALUATION OF GALENIC FORMULAS -SELECT AND COMBINE THE STUDIED INSTRUMENTAL METHODS TO SOLVE SPECIFIC ANALYTICAL PROBLEMS -UNDERSTAND THE SPECTRAL DATA ACQUIRED THROUGH THE STUDIED INSTRUMENTAL TECHNIQUES. |

THE COURSE (6 CFU) INCLUDES 48 HOURS OF ASSISTED TEACHING. THE TOPICS ADDRESSED IN THE COURSE ARE: SECTION 1 – INTRODUCTION, ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION, MOLECULAR SPECTROSCOPY (4H). SECTION 2 – INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY (IR) THEORETICAL ASPECTS, OBTAINING AN IR SPECTRUM AND INTERPRETATION OF IR SPECTRA. APPLICATIONS OF IR SPECTROSCOPY. (4H) SECTION 3 - UV-VIS ABSORPTION SPECTROSCOPY: THEORETICAL ASPECTS, MOLECULAR ORBITALS, ELECTRONIC TRANSITIONS, CHROMOPHORES. UV-VIS SPECTRA AND APPLICATIONS OF UV-VIS SPECTROSCOPY. (6H). SECTION 4 - CIRCULAR DYCHROISM SPECTROSCOPY (CD): PRINCIPLES OF CIRCULAR DYCHROISM SPECTROSCOPY (CD) AND POLARIMETRY. APPLICATIONS OF CIRCULAR DICHROISM. (2H) SECTION 5 - MASS SPECTROMETRY: INTRODUCTION, INSTRUMENTATION AND RECORDING OF SPECTRA, IONIZATION, FRAGMENTATION PROCESSES. MASS SPECTRA AND FIELDS OF APPLICATION OF MASS SPECTROMETRY. COUPLED CHROMATOGRAPHY–MASS SPECTROMETRY TECHNIQUES. (14H) SECTION 6- NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE SPECTROSCOPY (NMR): INTRODUCTION AND THEORETICAL BASIS. 1H-NMR SPECTROSCOPY, 13C-NMR SPECTROSCOPY, TWO-DIMENSIONAL NMR SPECTROSCOPY. ANALYSIS OF NMR SPECTRA AND FIELDS OF APPLICATION. (18H) |

THE COURSE PROVIDES 48 HOURS OF ASSISTED TEACHING (6 CFU) DIVIDED INTO HOURS OF FRONTAL LESSONS AND HOURS OF GUIDED CLASSROOM EXERCISES. DURING THE EXERCISES, THE STUDENTS CHECK DIRECTLY WHAT THE TEACHER INTRODUCES DURING THE LESSON. THE FREQUENCY OF TEACHING HAS TO BE CONSIDERED MANDATORY AND ACCESS TO THE FINAL EXAM REQUIRES THE ATTENDANCE OF AT LEAST 70% OF THE LESSONS AND EXERCISES. THE PROCEDURES FOR VERIFYING THE ATTENDANCE OF THE COURSE WILL BE COMMUNICATED TO THE STUDENTS BY THE TEACHER. (IT WILL BE VERIFIED BY COLLECTING THE SIGNATURES OF THOSE PRESENT/USING THE AUTOMATIC DETECTION SYSTEM PROVIDED BY THE UNIVERSITY). |

ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING A FINAL PROFIT EXAMINATION. THE EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL TEST AND PROVIDES FOR BOTH TO BE EVALUATED IN THIRTIETHS. THE WRITTEN TEST, IS PREPARATORY FOR THE SUBSEQUENT ORAL TEST, AND IS AIMED AT VERIFYING THE ABILITY TO CORRECTLY APPLY THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE, THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEMS PROPOSED. THE WRITTEN TEST SHOULD BE COMPLETED IN 2H AND CONSIST OF A TASK ON THE TOPICS OF THE TEACHING PROGRAMME. IN PARTICULAR, IT INCLUDES BOTH OPEN/MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS ON THE MAIN TOPICS COVERED (IR SPECTROSCOPY, UV-VIS MASS SPECTROMETRY, HPLC COUPLED TO MASS SPECTROMETRY; NMR SPECTROSCOPY) AND EXERCISES RELATED TO THE INTERPRETATION OF SPECTRA. THE ORAL EXAM CONSISTS OF AN INTERVIEW (ABOUT 20 MINUTES) WITH QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ON THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS OF THE TEACHING PROGRAM AND IS INTENDED TO ASCERTAIN THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT, AS WELL AS TO VERIFY THE EXPOSURE CAPACITY USING THE APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY AND THE ABILITY TO AUTONOMOUSLY ORGANIZE THE EXHIBITION ON THE SAME SUBJECTS WITH THEORETICAL CONTENT. THE MINIMUM VOTE FOR PASSING THE EXAM IS 18/30. “30 CUM LAUDE" MAY BE GIVEN TO STUDENTS WHO REACH THE MAXIMUM RATING OF 30/30 AND DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO APPLY THEIR OWN KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED IN LESSONS. |
