THE COURSE WILL PROVIDE, THROUGH AN ANALYSIS OF SOME OCCUPATIONAL (ESP) AS WELL AS GEOGRAPHICAL VARIETIES OF ENGLISH, AWARENESS OF THE MOST RELEVANT SOCIOLINGUISTIC ASPECTS AS WELL AS SPECIALIZED LANGUAGES IN CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING STUDENTS WILL: -STRENGTHEN THE ABILITY TO USE THE MAIN TOOLS OF LANGUAGE LEARNING (DICTIONARIES, GRAMMAR BOOKS, SELF-ACCESS AND MULTIMEDIA TOOLS); -COMPLETE A LEVEL OF COMPETENCE CORRESPONDING TO A FULL C1 OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN LANGUAGE FRAMEWORK; -LEARN HOW TO METALINGUISTICALLY DISTINGUISH ALL THE DIATOPIC L1 VARIETIES OF ENGLISH AND REFLECT ON THE LINGUISTIC CHARACTERISTICS AND STRUCTURES OF CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH; AND THEIR SOCIOLINGUISTIC IMPLICATIONS; -ENHANCE THE ABILITY OF HOW TO ANALYSE WRITTEN AND ORAL ENGLISH THROUGH THE STUDY OF LINGUISTICS AND THE TOOLS OF CORPUS LINGUISTICS. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: -CATCH THE KEY POINTS OF A COMPLEX DISCOURSE; -CATCH THE KEY POINTS OF A SPECIFIC PROFESSIONAL DISCOURSE; -PRODUCE AN ORAL OR WRITTEN TEXT IN A CLEAR AND DETAILED WAY; -SUPPORT AN OPINION/POINT OF VIEW ON DIFFERENT TOPICS; -IDENTIFY AND USE THE MAIN DIFFERENCES AMONG ALL DIFFERENT L1 VARIETIES OF ENGLISH AROUND THE WORLD AND FOR SPECIAL PURPOSES; -ANALYSE WRITTEN AND ORAL TEXTS, ALSO IN SOME OF THE MANY PROFESSIONAL DOMAINS. MAKING JUDGEMENTS STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: -FORMULATE AND DISCUSS HYPOTHESES, CONTRAST AND JUDGE LANGUAGE TEXTS ALSO IN PROFESSIONAL DOMAINS; -CRITICALLY ANALYSE DATA TO OBSERVE AND CONTRAST THE MAIN VARIETIES OF ENGLISH; -CRITICALLY DISCUSS THE STUDIED PHENOMENA IN RELATION TO THE CONTEXTS OF USE AND THE DIATOPIC VARIETIES OF ENGLISH. COMMUNICATION SKILLS STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: -MASTER AT A C1 LEVEL THE COMMUNICATION IN ENGLISH; -APPROPRIATELY AND RELEVANTLY ACT IN THE VARIOUS SOCIO-CULTURAL CONTEXTS, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THEIR OBJECTIVES AND THE INTERLOCUTORS; -PRESENT AND DISCUSS THE RESULTS OF THEIR RESEARCH THROUGH TEXTS AND DIGITAL TOOLS. LEARNING SKILLS STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: -MASTER TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS AND DIGITAL RESOURCES; -UNDERSTAND,INTERPRET AND PRODUCE COMPLEX TEXTS AND DISTINGUISH AMONG THE DIFFERENT VARIETIES OF CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH AROUND THE WORLD; -PROCEED WITH SOME CONTINUOUS UPDATING OF THEIR KNOWLEDGE, IDENTIFYING AND MAKING USE OF ITS MOST RELEVANT SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE. |

STUDENTS MUST HAVE PASSED THE FOLLOWING EXAMS: ENGLISH LITERATURE 2 AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE 2. AN INTERMEDIATE LEVEL OF ENGLISH (B2 LEVEL OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK) IS REQUIRED. |

THE COURSE WILL BE DEVOTED TO A LINGUISTIC OVERVIEW OF PRESENT-DAY ENGLISH, ANALYSING WRITTEN AND ORAL ENGLISH THROUGH THE STUDY OF THE DIFFERENT BRANCHES OF LINGUISTICS (PHONOLOGY, MORPHOLOGY, SYNTAX, SEMANTICS, PRAGMATICS, SOCIOLINGUISTICS, LANGUAGE VARIATION AND CHANGE). SPECIAL ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO DIAPHASIC VARIATION (ESP), AND TO THE DIASTRATIC AND DIATOPIC VARIATIES OF BRITISH ENGLISH AND TO THE ROLE OF ENGLISH AS AN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE. MULTIMEDIA AUTHENTIC MATERIALS WILL BE USED THROUGHOUT THE COURSE WHEN NECESSARY. THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL LECTURES WILL BE SUPPORTED BY DETAILED SOCIOLINGUISTIC AND LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS (INCLUDING THE AREAS OF PHONOLOGY, MORPHOLOGY, SYNTAX, LEXIS AND STYLE). PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF LINGUISTICS IS REQUIRED. LANGUAGE EXPERTS (CEL) WILL ASSIST STUDENTS WORKING ON FAMILIAR MATTERS ENCOUNTERED AT SCHOOL, WORK, LEISURE, ETC; PRODUCING SIMPLE CONNECTED TEXTS ON FAMILIAR TOPICS; DESCRIBING EXPERIENCES AND EVENTS, PLANS, HOPES AND AMBITIONS. |
