Objectives
THE COURSE WILL PROVIDE ANALYTICAL, DESCRIPTIVE AND PRACTICAL EXPOSURE TO DIFFERENT VARIETIES OF THE ENGLISH IN AUTHENTIC CONTEXTS OF USE AND WILL BE DEVOTED TO A LINGUISTIC OVERVIEW OF PRESENT-DAY ENGLISH, ANALYSING WRITTEN AND ORAL ENGLISH THROUGH THE STUDY OF LINGUISTICS (PHONOLOGY, MORPHOLOGY, SYNTAX, SEMANTICS, PRAGMATICS, SOCIOLINGUISTICS AND LANGUAGE VARIATION AND CHANGE). SPECIAL ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE DIASTRATIC AND DIATOPIC VARIETIES OF BRITISH ENGLISH AND TO THE ROLE OF ENGLISH AS AN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL:
-LEARN HOW TO USE THE MAIN TOOLS OF LANGUAGE LEARNING (DICTIONARIES, GRAMMAR BOOKS, SELF-ACCESS AND MULTIMEDIA TOOLS);
-COMPLETE A LEVEL OF COMPETENCE CORRESPONDING TO B2 OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN LANGUAGE FRAMEWORK;
-LEARN HOW TO METALINGUISTICALLY REFLECT ON THE LINGUISTIC CHARACTERISTICS AND STRUCTURES OF CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH;
-LEARN HOW TO ANALYSE WRITTEN AND ORAL ENGLISH THROUGH THE STUDY OF LINGUISTICS.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-COMMUNICATE IN EVERYDAY SITUATIONS, READ AND UNDERSTAND SHORT TEXTS.
-WORK ON FAMILIAR MATTERS ENCOUNTERED AT SCHOOL, WORK, LEISURE, ETC;
-ADEQUATELY ELABORATE, PRODUCE AND DISCUSS IN ENGLISH;
-IDENTIFY THE MAIN LINGUISTIC DIFFERENCES AMONG THE MAIN VARIETIES OF ENGLISH;
-ANALYSE WRITTEN AND ORAL ENGLISH.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-FORMULATE AND DISCUSS HYPOTHESES, CONTRAST AND JUDGE LANGUAGE TEXTS;
-CRITICALLY SELECT DATA TO COMPARE AND CONTRAST THE MAIN VARIETIES OF ENGLISH;
-CONSIDER THE STUDIED PHENOMENA IN RELATION TO THE CONTEXTS OF USE AND THE DIATOPIC VARIETIES OF ENGLISH.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-COMMUNICATE IN ENGLISH;
-APPROPRIATELY ACT IN THE VARIOUS SOCIO-CULTURAL CONTEXTS, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THEIR OBJECTIVES AND THE INTERLOCUTORS;
-PRESENT AND COMMUNICATE THE RESULTS OF THEIR RESEARCH THROUGH TEXTS AND DIGITAL TOOLS.

LEARNING SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS AND DIGITAL RESOURCES;
-UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET SHORT TEXTS AND DISTINGUISH BETWEEN STANDARD AND NON-STANDARD VARIETIES OF BRITISH ENGLISH;
-PROCEED WITH SOME CONTINUOUS UPDATING OF THEIR KNOWLEDGE, MAKING USE OF ITS MOST RELEVANT SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE.
Prerequisites
ELEMENTARY KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH (B1 LEVEL OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN LANGUAGE FRAMEWORK).
Contents
THE COURSE WILL PROVIDE DESCRIPTIVE AND PRACTICAL OVERVIEW OF PRESENT-DAY ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS, ANALYSING WRITTEN AND ORAL ENGLISH. STUDENTS WILL MEET TWICE A WEEK WITH OUR NATIVE-LANGUAGE ASSISTANTS TO WORK ON THEIR ENGLISH LANGUAGE THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE YEAR IN ORDER TO REACH A B2 LEVEL OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE FOR LANGUAGES (CEFR). IN THE SECOND TERM, STUDENTS WILL DEEPEN THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND DEAL WITH THE STUDY OF ENGLISH LINGUISTICS APPROACHING AND WORKING ON THE LEXICON (4 HOURS), THE PHONOLOGY (4 HOURS), THE MORPHOLOGY (4 HOURS), SYNTAX (4 HOURS), PROSODY (2 HOURS) SEMANTICS (4 HOURS) AND PRAGMATICS (2 HOURS) OF ENGLISH TODAY, PARTIALLY LOOKING AT ITS HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT. SPECIAL ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE DIASTRATIC AND DIATOPIC VARIATIES OF BRITISH ENGLISH (8 HOURS), THE ROLE OF ENGLISH AS AN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE (6 HOURS), THE MAIN DIFFERENCES WITH AMERICAN ENGLISH (2 HOURS) AND TO THE USE OF DICTIONARIES AND CORPUS LINGUISTICS (4 HOURS). AUTHENTIC MATERIALS SUCH AS DOCUMENTARIES, SONGS, FILMS, NEWSPAPER ARTICLES WILL BE USED THROUGHOUT THE COURSE. THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL LECTURES WILL BE SUPPORTED BY LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF A 45-HOUR SET OF LECTURES HELD BY THE PROFESSOR IN CHARGE IN THE SECOND SEMESTER SUPPORTED BY PRACTICAL LANGUAGE ACTIVITIES WITH NATIVE-SPEAKER LANGUAGE EXPERTS AND SELF-STUDY ALL YEAR ROUND.
CONSTANT AND ACTIVE ATTENDANCE TO LECTURES AND PRACTICAL LANGUAGE ACTIVITIES IN THE CLASSROOM AND/OR LANGUAGE LABS WITH NATIVE-SPEAKER LANGUAGE EXPERTS IS HIGHLY SUGGESTED.
Verification of learning
THE 90-MINUTE WRITTEN EXAM WILL BE TAKEN AT THE END OF THE WHOLE COURSE SINCE JUNE. ONLY STUDENTS WHO PASS THE WRITTEN EXAM CAN TAKE THE ORAL EXAM. THE WRITTEN EXAM CONTAINS LEXICAL AND GRAMMAR EXERCISES PLUS A READING AND A WRITING TASK.
THE ORAL EXAM CONSISTS OF THREE PARTS: LISTENING TEST, SPEAKING TEST AND LINGUISTICS EXAMINATION.
STUDENTS ATTENDING THE COURSE CAN TAKE PARTS OF THE EXAM DURING THE COURSE. CHECK THE PROFESSOR'S WEBPAGE FOR DETAILS.
