BY THE STUDY OF DIFFERENT POLITICAL THEORIES, THIS COURSE AIMS TO PROBLEMATIZE THE RELATION BETWEEN INDIVIDUALS IN THE SOCIAL SYSTEM. WHAT CONNECTS US TO THE OTHERS? AND WHAT WE OWE TO EACH OTHERS? WHAT SHOULD BE THE SHAPE OF LEGITIMATE SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS?
DIFFERENT THEORIES ANSWER DIFFERENTLY TO THESE KIND OF QUESTIONS. THEORIES ACCORDING TO WHICH TO RESPECT INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM IS ALL (AND ONLY) WHAT SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS MUST WARRANT TO BE LEGITIMATE, ARE INVESTIGATED AND CONTRASTED WITH THEORIES THAT MAKE OF COLLECTIVE INTEREST THE ONLY POSSIBLE JUSTIFICATION OF SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS.
BASED ON THE NOTION OF SOCIAL JUSTICE, THE COURSE IS MEANT TO PROVIDE INSTRUMENTS FOR ANSWERING QUESTIONS ON WHAT IS SOCIALLY JUST. THE AIM IS MAINLY CRITICAL. THE GOAL IS TO STIMULATE THE CAPACITY OF THE STUDENTS TO PROVIDE ARGUMENTS IN FAVOR OF ONE THESIS, CAPTURING THE STRENGTHS AND THE WEAKNESSES OF THE ADVERSARY.
AS SOCIAL JUSTICE IS THE MEETING-POINT OF NORMATIVE QUESTIONS, AS WELL AS ECONOMICAL, POLITICAL, AND SOCIAL FACTORS, THE COURSE ADDRESSES TO STUDENTS AS MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC SPHERE, BE THAT AS CITIZENS OR ADMINISTRATORS, AS A BASIS FOR A CRITICAL-NORMATIVE APPROACH TO THE SOCIAL ARRANGEMENT.

ETHICS ED ECONOMICS IS A STUDY ON THE BASES OF THE SOCIETY. TOUGH THE CHOSEN PERSPECTIVE IS NORMATIVE, HAVING SOCIAL JUSTICE AT ITS CENTRE, THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC QUESTIONS ARE NOT ADDRESSED TOO. AIMING AT ANSWERING QUESTIONS CONCERNING WHICH SHAPE SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS SHOULD TAKE TO BE JUST, THE COURSE UNAVOIDABLY FACES EMPIRICAL QUESTIONS CONCERNING THE NATURE OF SOCIETY.
WHAT ARE SOCIETIES: SUM OF CONTRASTING INTERESTS THAT SHOULD BE AGGREGATED IN SOME WAY? OR THEY ARE SUM OF FREE INDIVIDUALS WHOSE PRIVATE CONTRACTS ARE ALL THAT SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS MUST RESPECT? OR THE SOCIAL COEXISTENCE COMMITS US TO SOMETHING MORE?
THE CORSE EXAMINES DIFFERENT THEORIES THAT ADDRESS THIS KIND OF QUESTIONS, ON THE BACKGROUND OF DIFFERENT CONCEPTIONS OF THE SOCIETY AND OF SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS.
FOR UNDERSTANDING THE NATURE OF THE COURSE, IT IS IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER THAT THE COURSE DOES NOT ONLY AIM AND NOT MAINLY AT STUDENTS' APPREHENDING A CERTAIN NUMBER OF THEORIES. THE THEORIES INVESTIGATED PREVALENTLY COME FROM CONTEMPORARY AUTHORS. IT IS CRUCIAL THAT THE STUDENTS SEE THEM AS ENGAGED IN A DEBATE ON THESES ON WHICH THEY FUNDAMENTALLY DISAGREE. STUDENTS MUST BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE NATURE OF THEIR DISAGREEMENT, THE ARGUMENTS THEY BRING TO CONTRAST A GIVEN THESIS AND THE ALTERNATIVES WHICH ARE PROPOSED.
THE COURSE IS ABOUT THEORIES SUCH AS UTILITARIANISM, LIBERTARIANISM, JOHN RAWLS' THEORY OF JUSTICE AND SO ON. IT PROPOSES MANY CASES, REAL OR HYPOTHETICAL, ON WHICH STUDENT HAVE TO TAKE A POSITION, BY OFFERING ARGUMENTS ON THE REASONS WHY THEY TOOK THAT POSITION USING THE THEORIES THEY STUDIED AS A BASIS.

Verification of learning
THE EXAM IS ORAL. THE STUDENTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO ANSWER IN CLASS ARGUMENTATIVE QUESTIONS. ANSWERS MUST BE CLEAR, COMPLETE AND WELL ARGUED. IT WON'T BE SUFFICIENT FOR A GOOD VOTE THE SIMPLE ENUNCIATION OF THE THESIS OF ONE AUTHOR. BUT THE CAPACITY TO CONFRONT THE DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES INVESTIGATED DURING THE COURSE. QUESTIONS WILL OFTEN TAKE THE FORM OF CASES, REAL OR HYPOTHETICAL, FOR WHICH THE STUDENT WILL BE REQUIRED TO ILLUSTRATE HOW THEY WOULD BE TREATED ACCORDING TO ONE POSITION IN CONTRAST WITH OTHERS.
NONE THE LESS, KNOWLEDGE OF THE TEXT WILL CONSTITUTE THE MINIMAL CONDITION TO PASS THE EXAM. WELL ANALYZED ANSWERS ARE THE CONDITION TO PASS THE EXAMS WITH A SCORE EXCEEDING 25/30.
IT MUST BE CONSIDERED THAT WRITTEN PRACTICES WILL BE REQUIRED DURING TEACHING AND THEY WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT FOR THE FINAL SCORE.
Texts
THERE IS NO INDICATION FOR FURTHER BIBLIOGRAPHY. NONETHELESS, IT MUST BE CONSIDERED THAT, FOR EACH WRITTEN PRACTICE, FURTHER STUDIES WILL BE NECESSARY. THE SELECTION OF EXCEEDING LITERATURE CONSTITUTES AN ELEMENT FOR THE FINAL EVALUATION. CHOOSING FURTHER READINGS IN ENGLISH IS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED. STUDENTS CAN FIND IT IN JSTOR, THE HABITUAL USE OF WHICH THE COURSE PROPOSES TO INCENTIVATE.
