Objectives
POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY AIMS AT PROVIDING INSTRUMENTS FOR ANALYZING THE MAIN CONCEPTS OF POLITICS. BY EXAMINING PREEMINENT CONTEMPORARY POLITICAL DOCTRINES, WE WILL EXAMINE THEIR DIFFERENT CONCEPTIONS OF THE INDIVIDUAL AND THE SOCIETY, AS THEY ARE RELATED TO DIFFERENT IDEAS OF FREEDOM, EQUALITY, INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS, COLLECTIVE WELFARE, SOCIAL JUSTICE, STABILITY. THE RELATION BETWEEN SOCIAL JUSTICE AND STABILITY IS ACCURATELY INVESTIGATED, FOLLOWING THE LINE OF RESEARCH ACCORDING TO WHICH JUST LAWS AND INSTITUTIONS ARE THE ONLY POSSIBILE SOURCE OF SOCIAL ORDER. ACCORDINGLY, THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS IS TO GIVE STUDENTS A VIEW OF THE NATURE OF SOCIETY, AS WELL AS OF THE RELATION AMONG INDIVIDUALS. BY CONSTANTLY COMPARING THE DIFFERENT THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVES, STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO DEVELOP CRITICAL AND ANALYTICAL CAPACITIES, FOR ACHIEVING AUTONOMY AND INDEPENDENCE OF JUDGEMENT. ALL ALONG, STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ENTER INTO DIALOGUES, FOR ENHANCING THEIR CAPACITY TO EXPRESS THEIR POINT OF VIEW WITH CONFIDENCE AND CONCEPTUAL CLARITY. BESIDES DEALING WITH THE TEACHER, STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO CONFRONT EACH OTHER TO STIMULATE THEIR LOGICAL AND ARGUMENTATIVE CAPACITIES, AS WELL AS THEIR DIALOGICAL AND EXPRESSIVE SKILLS. TO IMPROVE LEARNING ABILITY, FINALLY, STUDENTS ARE STIMULATED, USING EXAMPLES AND HYPOTHETICAL SITUATIONS, TO TAKE A POSITION, JUSTIFYING IT ACCORDING AND IN VIEW OF ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE.

THE OBJECTS OF POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY ARE THE SOCIAL STRUCTURES WITHIN WHICH HUMAN BEINGS LIVE THEIR INTERCONNECTED LIVES. WE WILL TRY TO UNDERSTAND WHAT SOCIETIES ARE AND WHAT MAKES THEM POSSIBILE.
HOWEVER, FOLLOWING A NORMATIVE APPROACH, WE WILL INVESTIGATE NOT ONLY HOW SOCIETIES COME INTO BEING AND PERSIST, BUT AT WHICH CONDITIONS THEY ARE JUST OR UNJUST, ALSO INVESTIGATING THE MEANING OF THIS TERMS.
WE WILL EXAMINE DIFFERENT POLITICAL THEORIES OFFERING DIFFERENT ANSWERS TO SUCH A KIND OF QUESTIONS, BY CONFRONTING THEM. IT IS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE NATURE OF THIS COURSE DOES NOT CONSIST IN PRESENTING THE THOUGHT OF DIFFERENT AUTHORS AND THEIR DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES. RATHER, THE MAIN AIM IS TO SEE THESE AUTHORS AS ENGAGED IN AN INTENSIVE DIALOGUE, TRYING TO DEFEND THE VALIDITY OF THEIR RESPECTIVE ARGUMENTS EACH AGAINST THE OTHER. BY FOCALIZING ON THE FOUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS OF SOCIETY, WE WILL EXAMINE HOW, ACCORDING TO DIFFERENT CONCEPTIONS, THE LAWS THAT WARRANT INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS. AT THIS REGARD, WE WILL SEE HOW DIFFERENTLY THEY CONCEIVE OF THE EXTENT OF PERSONAL FREEDOM, OFFERING DIFFERENT VIEWS OF WHAT IN JUST SOCIETY SHOULD BE PERMITTED OR PROHIBITED. WE WILL ALSO INVESTIGATE THE NATURE OF THESE CONCEPTS. WHAT ARE INDIVIDUALS RIGHTS? WHAT IS FREEDOM? SOME THEORIES GIVE INSTITUTIONAL ACCOUNTS OF THEM, HUMAN ARTIFACTS, AS SOME FORMS OF UTILITARIANISM OR IN JOHN RAWLS'S THEORY OF JUSTICE. SOME OTHERS OFFER A METAPHYSICALLY ENGAGED ACCOUNT OF INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS, ASSUMING THEIR REALITY, AS IN NOZICK'S LIBERTARIANISM.
A FUNDAMENTAL AND CONTROVERSIAL ASPECTS OF SOCIETIES CONCERNS THE WAY IN WHICH THEIR SOCIAL WEALTH IS DISTRIBUTED. HERE THEORIES DISAGREE EVEN MORE, SINCE LIBERTARIANS DENY THE EXISTENCE OF ANYTHING AS DISTRIBUTIVE JUSTICE, IN CONTRAST WITH RAWLS'S THEORY OF DISTRIBUTIVE JUSTICE.
POLITICAL THEORIST NOT ONLY DEBATE AMONG THEMSELVES CONCERNING THE BETS INTERPRETATIONS OF CERTAIN AGREED CONCEPTS, BUT ON THE VERY NATURE OF SOCIETY AND THE BEST WAY OF STUDYING IT. WE WILL EXAMINE CONTEMPORARY MARXISM IN RELATION TO LEFT-LIBERTARIANISM AND EGALITARIANISM. FEMINISM IS ANOTHER THEORY WHICH PRESENTS A VERY DIFFERENT CONCEPTION OF SOCIETY REFERRING TO PATRIARCHY AS ITS FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPT.
SPECIAL IMPORTANCE WILL BE GIVEN TO CONCEPTS OF SOCIAL ORDER AND SOCIAL STABILITY AND TO BEST WAY OF UNDERSTANDING THEM.
FINALLY, THE THEORIES WE WILL EXAMINE WILL BE OUR GUIDE FOR AN INSIGHT OF CLASSICAL POLITICAL PHILOSOPHERS TO WHICH THEY ARE INSPIRED AND WITH WHICH THEY DIALOGUE.
