THE TEACHING AIMS TO PROVIDE THE STUDENT WITH ADVANCED THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE FOR THE ANALYSIS, DESIGN, MONITORING AND EVALUATION OF PUBLIC POLICIES RELATED TO MOTOR-SPORT PRACTICE. THE TEACHING ALSO AIMS TO PROVIDE THE STUDENT WITH THE TOOLS, CONCEPTUAL AND OPERATIONAL, FOR THE ANALYSIS OF TRANSNATIONAL SPORT GOVERNANCE SYSTEMS. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING IT IS EXPECTED THAT STUDENTS WILL DEMONSTRATE ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN THEORETICAL, METHODOLOGICAL AND EMPIRICAL APPROACHES TO THE ANALYSIS OF GOVERNANCE SYSTEMS AND PUBLIC POLICIES RELATED TO THE PRACTICE OF SPORTS DISCIPLINES, AS WELL AS THE ABILITY TO DEVELOP AND APPLY ORIGINAL IDEAS TO ORGANIZATIONAL ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION OF PUBLIC POLICIES, IN NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL CONTEXTS. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING IT IS EXPECTED THAT STUDENTS WILL DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO APPLY THEIR KNOWLEDGE TO THE PERFORMANCE OF FUNCTIONS IN THE DIRECTION, PLANNING AND COORDINATION OF ORGANIZATIONS OPERATING IN THE FIELD OF SPORTS AND MOTOR ACTIVITIES; IN THE ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT OF SPORT EVENTS, ENTERPRISES, INSTITUTIONS AND FACILITIES; AND IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF POLITICAL-INSTITUTIONAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE RELATIONS. |

WHETHER WE LIKE IT OR NOT, SPORT IS LARGELY ORGANIZED AROUND A SET OF DISTINCTIONS THAT ARE POLITICAL AND MORAL IN NATURE. THE OLYMPIC GAMES OF ANTIQUITY WERE STRICTLY FORBIDDEN TO WOMEN, ARTICULATING "A SERIES OF HIERARCHIES IN WHICH EVENTS, FESTIVALS, GENDERS, NATIONS, AND OTHER GROUPS WERE ORDERED AND RANKED NO LESS THAN INDIVIDUALS" (GOLDEN 1998). IT CONSTITUTED A SCANDAL FOR THE ATHENIANS, PERHAPS THE MOST MISOGYNISTIC OF ANCIENT SOCIETIES, THAT SPARTAN WOMEN RECEIVED A SPORTS EDUCATION SIMILAR TO THAT OF MEN, PROBABLY PRACTICING WITH THEM. ARISING AS A PRACTICE AS WELL AS A STRONGLY IDENTITY-DRIVEN MASCULINE ONE, TO THIS DAY, SPORT TURNS OUT TO BE TRAVERSED BY BOTH FORMS OF SEXUAL SEGREGATION AND ETHNIC TENSIONS THAT APPEAR INCREASINGLY PROBLEMATIC. THE COURSE AIMS TO ANALYZE, ALSO USING CONCRETE CASES DRAWN FROM CURRENT EVENTS, ASPECTS OF SPORTS PRACTICE THAT ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO MORAL EVALUATION. THE FRAMEWORK INTENDED TO BE FOLLOWED IS THAT OF APPLIED ETHICS. A GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO MORAL PHILOSOPHY AND ITS ACCOMPANYING ARGUMENTATIVE PRACTICES WILL BE OFFERED TO STUDENTS. ALTHOUGH IT IS VERY COMMON TO THINK THAT MORAL ISSUES ARE INTRACTABLE, SO TO SPEAK, AND BELONG TO THE REALM OF ISSUES ON WHICH IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO ARGUE RATIONALLY, THE COURSE AIMS TO SHOW HOW THIS IS NOT THE ONLY ALTERNATIVE, OFFERING STUDENTS AND UNDERGRADUATES THEORETICAL TOOLS TO ADDRESS AND DISCUSS MORALLY SALIENT AND PUBLIC ISSUES. THE COURSE RUNS ALONG TWO MAIN AREAS. ON THE ONE HAND IT INVESTIGATES THE RATIONALE FOR THE SEXUAL SEGREGATION THAT STILL CHARACTERIZES SPORTS PRACTICE, PARTICULARLY AT THE COMPETITIVE LEVEL. HERE IT INVESTIGATES ISSUES SUCH AS THE APPROPRIATENESS OF CURRENT DISTINCTIONS BASED ON A BINARY VIEW OF GENDER, AS WELL AS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE NOW SUFFICIENTLY MASSIVE AND, IN ANY CASE, INCREASING ENTRY OF WOMEN AT THE COMPETITIVE LEVEL. ON THE OTHER IT INVESTIGATES THE IDENTITY CHARACTER THAT TRADITIONALLY RUNS THROUGH IT. IF SPORTS AGONISM BRINGS WITH IT AN ALMOST NATURAL OPPOSITION BETWEEN AN "US" AND A "THEM," THIS RAISES, ON THE OTHER HAND, SIGNIFICANT QUESTIONS ABOUT THE NATURE OF THE "US. RACIST PHENOMENA THAT RUN THROUGH SPORTS MAY BE A REFLECTION OF A DEEPER SOCIAL PHENOMENON, BUT THEY ARE NONETHELESS A MANAGEMENT PROBLEM THAT DEMANDS TO BE UNDERSTOOD AND ADDRESSED. |
