THE COURSE AIMS TO OFFER A WIDE KNOWLEDGE OF LANGUAGE STRUCTURES OF LATIN (PHONETICS, MORPHOLOGY, SYNTAX) AND LATIN LITERATURE, IN ITS HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE STUDENT: - WILL KNOW THE DISCIPLINARY FUNDAMENTALS OF THE LATIN LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE; - WILL UNDERSTAND LATIN LITERARY TEXTS AND THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF LATIN LITERATURE. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - TRANSLATE LATIN LITERARY TEXTS; - CRITICALLY ANALYZE A LATIN LITERARY TEXT; - ILLUSTRATE THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF LATIN LITERATURE; - CRITICALLY INTERPRET THE LITERARY CIVILIZATION OF ANCIENT ROME. AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - EVALUATE A LITERARY TEXT; - DISCERN THE CONSTITUTIONAL ELEMENTS OF A LITERARY TEXT; - SELECT THE PHENOMENA AND THE HIGHLIGHTS OF A LITERARY CIVILIZATION IN ITS HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT. COMMUNICATION SKILLS THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - EXPRESS YOURSELF IN ITALIAN LANGUAGE WITH GREATER AWARENESS; - REPRESENT AND COMMUNICATE, THROUGH TEXTS OR VIRTUAL INSTRUMENTS, THE RESULTS OF OWN RESEARCH OR PROCESSING. - SUPPORTING CONVERSATIONS ON TOPICS RELATED TO LATIN LITERATURE, MAKING USE OF AN APPROPRIATE CRITICAL TERMINOLOGY. LEARNING SKILLS THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS AND COMPUTER RESOURCES; - CARRY OUT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET COMPLEX LITERARY TEXTS. - PROCEED WITH THE CONTINUOUS UPDATING OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE, USING THE TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE. |

THE COURSE CONSISTS OF 60 HOURS OF LECTURES. THE LESSONS ARE DIALOGUED. THE LATIN LITERARY TEXTS PROVIDED BY THE PROGRAM ARE READ, TRANSLATED AND COMMENTED BY THE TEACHER. DURING THE LECTURE THE TEACHER IS CONSTANTLY CONCERNED TO STIMULATE STUDENTS' REFLECTION ON ALL ASPECTS (CONTENT AND FORMAL ASPECTS) OF THE TEXTS READ AND THE PROBLEMS THAT THEY POSE. |

ORAL EXAMINATION CONDUCTED BY VERIFYING: A) KNOWLEDGE OF LATIN LITERARY HISTORY, AND IN PARTICULAR ABILITY TO SINGLE THE INDIVIDUAL WRITERS OUT AND PLACE THEM IN THE APPROPRIATE CONTEXT, ILLUSTRATING THEIR LIVES AND WORKS, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE WORKS GENRES, CONTENT, AND LINGUISTIC-STYLISTIC FORM; B) DIRECT READING AND ANALYSIS OF THE TEXTS, OF WHICH THE STUDENT WILL HAVE TO KNOW THE CONTENT AND PROVIDE TRANSLATION AND LINGUISTIC AND RHETORICAL COMMENTARY, DEMONSTRATING HIS KNOWLEDGE OF THE LATIN LANGUAGE AND HIS ABILITY TO RECOGNIZE AND ANALYZE ITS FORMS AND STRUCTURES. DURING THE EXAM, THE STUDENT MUST DEMONSTRATE POSSESSION OF TECHNICAL LANGUAGE AND RIGOROUS METHODOLOGY, AS WELL AS THE ABILITY TO SET OUT HIS ARGUMENTS WITH PRECISION AND CONSISTENCY. FINAL ASSESSMENT: THE MARK IS EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS, AND, IN THE EVENT OF A POSITIVE OUTCOME, RANGES FROM 18, WHICH IS THE MINIMUM MARK FOR PASSING THE EXAM, UP TO 30 AND HONOURS, DEPENDING ON THE STUDENT'S LEVEL OF PREPARATION. THE EXAM IS PASSED IF AT LEAST ENOUGH IS OBTAINED BOTH IN THE PART RELATING TO THE HISTORY OF LATIN LITERATURE, AND IN THAT RELATING TO THE PROSE AND LATIN POETRY PASSAGES THAT MUST BE READ IN LATIN, TRANSLATED INTO ITALIAN AND INTERPRETED. |
