Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE MAIN THEORIES AND APPLICATIONS USEFUL TO UNDERSTAND THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE FOUNDATIONS AS WELL AS THE STRUCTURES RETAINING EXCAVATIONS AND EMBANKMENTS AND THEIR ENGINEERING MODELLING RELATED TO VARIOUS STRESS CONDITIONS.
Prerequisites
THE PREREQUISITES ARE: THE EFFECTIVE STRESS PRINCIPLE; THE ESTIMATION OF THE STRESS AND STRAIN STATES IN MULTI-PHASE POROUS MEDIA; THE STEADY-STATE AND TRANSIENT SEEPAGE IN THE SOILS; THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF THE MULTU-PHASE POROUS MEDIA.

SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS: TYPES, ULTIMATE LIMITE STATES (COLLAPSE MECHANISMS, BEARING CAPACITY FORMULA IN STATIC AND SEISMIC CONDITIONS), SERVICEABILITY LIMIT STATES (METHODS FOR SETTLEMENT CALCULATION IN FINE-GRAINED AND COARSE-GRAINED SOILS, DAMAGEABILITY CRITERIA). SOIL-STRUCTURE INTERACTION MODELS. REINFORCED EXCAVATIONS. LAWS AND REGULATIONS; INSTABILITY OF THE BOTTOM OF THE EXCAVATION, DISPLACEMENTS ASSOCIATED WITH EXCAVATION OPERATIONS. REINFORCED SOIL. REINFORCED SOIL WALLS. ELEMENTS OF DESIGN AND CHECK OF INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL STABILITY.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE COVERS LECTURES AND CLASSROOM EXERCISES. TECHNICAL VISITS TO SITES OF INTEREST ARE ALSO SCHEDULED.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE FIXED OBJECTIVES WILL BE ASSESSED THROUGH AN ORAL EXAMINATION CONCERNING THE TOPICS COVERED IN CLASS AND THE PRESENTATION OF A CASE STUDY DEALING WITH RETAINING WORKS ANALYSED BY EACH STUDENT WITHIN A GROUP WORK.
