Objectives
THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO ENABLE THE STUDENT TO ACQUIRE THE SKILLS THAT - IN THE LIGHT OF THE PRINCIPLES OF GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING - ARE NECESSARY FOR THE DIMENSIONING, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE DICTATES OF THE REGULATIONS IN FORCE, OF THE CONNECTION STRUCTURES BETWEEN THE ELEVATED WORKS AND THE GROUND IN WHICH THEY ARE SET, AS WELL AS FOR THE PREDICTION OF THEIR BEHAVIOUR IN OPERATING CONDITIONS.
THE STUDENT WILL:
- ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TYPES OF FOUNDATIONS COMMONLY USED IN DESIGN PRACTICE, WITH REFERENCE TO BUILDINGS TO BE USED FOR RESIDENTIAL PURPOSES;
- UNDERSTAND THE THEORETICAL MODELS FOR THE VERIFICATION OF THE SAFETY OF FOUNDATIONS - BOTH SHALLOW AND DEEP AT ULTIMATE AND SERVICEABILITY LIMIT STATES.
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- DIMENSION THE FOUNDATIONS OF BUILDINGS TO BE USED FOR RESIDENTIAL PURPOSES;
- PREDICT THEIR BEHAVIOUR IN OPERATING CONDITIONS, IN STATIC AND SEISMIC CONDITIONS.
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- DISCERN THE MOST APPROPRIATE THEORIES AND METHODS (IN TERMS OF ACCURACY AND RELIABILITY) FOR THE ANALYSIS, DIMENSIONING AND PREDICTION OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF SHALLOW AND DEEP FOUNDATIONS DEPENDING ON THE GEOMETRIC AND STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE STRUCTURE IN ELEVATION AND THE CONSTITUTION OF THE SUBSOIL.
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO
- WORK IN GROUPS;
- ORALLY PRESENT GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING TOPICS CONCERNING FOUNDATIONS.
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO SITUATIONS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE DEALT WITH DURING THE COURSE;
- DEEPEN THE TOPICS DEALT WITH USING DIFFERENT OR COMPLEMENTARY ANALYSIS TOOLS.
Prerequisites
THE PREREQUISITES ARE: THE EFFECTIVE STRESS PRINCIPLE; THE ESTIMATION OF THE STRESS AND STRAIN STATES IN MULTI-PHASE POROUS MEDIA; THE STEADY-STATE AND TRANSIENT SEEPAGE IN THE SOILS; THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF THE MULTU-PHASE POROUS MEDIA.

GENERAL CRITERIA OF FOUNDATION DESIGN (4 HOURS OF LESSON). SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS: TYPES (1 HOUR OF LESSON), ULTIMATE LIMITE STATES (COLLAPSE MECHANISMS, BEARING CAPACITY FORMULA IN STATIC AND SEISMIC CONDITIONS) (8 HOURS OF LESSON, 2 HOURS OF EXERCISE), SERVICEABILITY LIMIT STATES (METHODS FOR SETTLEMENT CALCULATION IN FINE-GRAINED AND COARSE-GRAINED SOILS, DAMAGEABILITY CRITERIA) (9 HOURS OF LESSON, 2 HOURS OF EXERCISE). SOIL-STRUCTURE INTERACTION MODELS (6 HOURS OF LESSON, 3 HOURS OF EXERCISE). DEEP FOUNDATIONS: TYPES (3 HOURS OF LESSON), ULTIMATE LIMIT STATES UNDER VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL LOADS (SINGLE PILE AND GROUP OF PILES) (10 HOURS OF LESSON, 3 HOURS OF EXERCISE), SERVICEABILITY LIMIT STATES (SINGLE PILE AND GROUP OF PILES), RAFT-PILED FOUNDATIONS, INERTIAL AND KINEMATIC INTERACTION. DESIGN RULES IN FORCE (5 HOURS OF LESSON, 4 HOURS OF EXERCISE).
Teaching Methods
THE TEACHING INCLUDES THEORETICAL LESSONS (4.6 CFU) AND TUTORIAL ACTIVITIES (1.4 CFU). THE TUTORIALS DEAL WITH THE PRINCIPAL TOPICS OF THE COURSE, WITH A PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE ASPECTS RELATED TO PRACTICE.
Verification of learning
THE ASSESSMENT OF THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE SET OBJECTIVES WILL TAKE PLACE BY MEANS OF AN ORAL EXAM SCHEDULED AT THE END OF THE COURSE. THIS ORAL EXAM (LASTING APPROXIMATELY HALF AN HOUR) NORMALLY INCLUDES THREE QUESTIONS ON THE THEORETICAL AND APPLICATIVE ASPECTS ADDRESSED IN THE COURSE. THE PURPOSE OF THIS EXAM IS TO VERIFY - ON THE BASIS OF THE RELEVANCE AND EXHAUSTIVENESS OF THE ANSWERS GIVEN - THE STUDENT'S LEVEL OF IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY TO CONNECT THE TOPICS, AND ABILITY IN CLARITY AND CRITICAL SYNTHESIS.
THE MINIMUM MARK (18) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT HAS A FRAGMENTARY KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL CONTENTS AND SHOWS A MODEST ABILITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED TO PRACTICAL CASES; THE MAXIMUM MARK (30) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A COMPLETE KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL CONTENTS AND SHOWS A REMARKABLE ABILITY TO LINK TOGETHER THE VARIOUS TOPICS OF THE COURSE, ENHANCING IT IN SOLVING APPLICATION PROBLEMS.
FULL SATISFACTION OF ALL THE ABOVE-MENTIONED REQUIREMENTS WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT FOR THE PURPOSES OF HONOURS.
