THIS CYCLE OF LECTURES IS FOR STUDENTS WHO AIM TO USE PHILOSOPHY AS INSTRUMENT OF REFLECTION AND REFLECTION ON PROFESSIONAL PROBLEMS, WITHOUT NEEDING THAT SYSTEMATIC KNOWLEDGE WHICH IS REQUIRED IN ORDER OF TEACHING PHILOSOPHY IN THE SCHOOL. THE FIRST PART ("PRIMO MODULO") OFFERS A GENERAL MAP OF THE PHILOSOPHICAL THEORIES WHICH HAVE AS OBJECTS THE HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXTS. THE SECOND PART (SECONDO MODULO) DISCUSSES THE MAIN PROBLEMS OF CONTEMPORARY ETHICS, KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: STUDENTS ACQUIRE FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGES ON THE PHILOSOPHICAL DOCTRINES WHICH MAINLY INFLUENCED HUMAN SCIENCES AND EDUCATIONAL THEORIES. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: STUDENTS ACQUIRE ABILITY TO USE PHILOSOPHY AS INSTRUMENT FOR A CONCEPTUAL ANALYSIS OF PARTICULAR PROBLEMS AND, MOREOVER, AS METHOD OF DIALOGUE AND DISCUSSION WHICH CAN BE APPLIED TO THE EDUCATIONAL FIELD TOO. |

TOPIC: THOUGHT AND EMOTIONS THE WHOLE TEACHING WILL BE DEDICATED TO THE TOPIC OF EMOTIONS, CONSIDERED BOTH BY A HISTORICO-CULTURAL POINT OF VIEW AND BY AN ETHICAL POINT OF VIEW. THE LECTURES WILL BE LEADED BY A SYSTEMATIC DISCUSSION OF MARTHA NUSSBAUM'S PIVOTAL BOOK "UPHEAVELS OF THOUGHT: THE INTELLIGENCE OF EMOTIONS" (2003). THE FIRST CYCLE OF LECTURES (WINTER SEMESTER, PROF: PIRO) WILL BE DEDICATED TO THE TOPIC "THE GREAT PHILOSOPHICAL THEORIES OF EMOTIONS", IT WILL DISCUSS THE FIRST PART OF NUSSBAUM'S BOOK (CHAPTERS 1-4), ADDING FURTHER CONSIDERATIONS ON THE PHILOSOPHICAL VIEWS OF EMOTIONS ALONG WESTERN CULTURAL HISTORY. THE SLIDES OF THESE LECTURES WILL BE EDITED AT THE END OF THE CYCLE ON THE PERSONAL WEBPAGE OF THE TEACHER (PROF. PIRO) THE SECOND CYCLE OF LECTURES (SPRING SEMESTER, PROF: COLANGELO) WILL FOCUS THE TOPIC "EMOTIONS IN MORAL LIFE" AND WILL DISCUSS MAINLY THE SECOND AND THE THIRD PART OF NUSSBAUM'S BOOK, NAMELY THE EMOTIONS OF COMPASSION AND LOVE, IN COMPARISON WITH OTHER CONTEMPORARY INTERPRETATIONS CONCERNING MORAL EMOTIONS. |

LETEACHING CONTENTS WILL BE: (A) INTRODUCED AND SUPPORTED BY AUDIOVISUAL METHODS (SLIDES, SHORT MOVIES); (B) SUPPORTED FURTHER THROUGH THE COMMON READING OF SHORT TEXTS FROM THE HANDBOOK OR FROM THE WORKS OF THE DISCUSSED AUTHORS: (C) ABSORBED THROUGH THE PERSONAL READING OF SLIDE AND OTHER MATERIALS THAT THE TEACHER SENDS TO THE STUDENTS. (D) FURTHER DISCUSSED THROUGH OPEN DISCUSSION SEMINARS USING THE CIRCLE TIME SETTING; (E) AT THE END OF THE FIRST CYCLE (PRIMO MODULO) IT WILL BE ORGANISED A PARTIAL PROOF WHICH WILL DESCHARGE THE CONTENTS OF THE FIRST CYCLE FROM THE FINAL PROOF. THE DAY AND THE MODALITIES OF THE PROOF WILL BE DISCUSSED IN THE CLASS IN THE FINAL LECTURE OF THE FIRST CYCLE. |

THE ORAL TEST CONSISTS IN AN INTERVIEW WITH QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ABOUT THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS INDICATED IN THE TEACHING PROGRAM. IT IS AIMED TO FIND THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ACHIEVED BY THE STUDENT, AND TO VERIFY THE EXPOSURE CAPACITY (APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY AND ABILITY OF AUTONOMOUS ORGANIZATION OF THE SPEECH) AT THE END OF THE WINTER SEMESTER, IT IS OFFERED TO STUDENTS THE POSSIBILITY OF HAVING AN INTERCOURSE PROOF WHICH DESCHARGE THE FINAL PROOF FROM THE WINTER CYCLE'S CONTENTS. |

THE SECOND CYCLE OF LECTURES WILL CONCERN MAINLY THE SECOND AND THIRD PART OF NUSSBAUM'S BOOK (CHAPTERS 6 - 7 - 8 - 9 - 10 - 11 - 13).
