Objectives | |

The course aims to provide students with the theoretical tools necessary to develop a greater awareness of the dynamics in place in communication processes. Today, more than ever before, this awareness is indispensable for the very nature of the society in which we live, a global society in which we are always experimenting new ways of communicating and in which knowing how to relate with others becomes an obligation and a necessity. As far as knowledge and comprehension skills are concerned, we aim at dealing with traditional communication models and systems (engineering model, semiotic model, relational model), up to the new approaches proposed by cognitive pragmatics. Particular attention will then be given to the Text, which, both for its semantic substance and for the linguistic forms of its realization, is a particularly complex and articulated entity. To this purpose, knowledge and analysis tools will be provided which, on the one hand, allow us to understand what a text in general is and, on the other, allow us to rigorously describe the structure of a specific text. As far as the application of knowledge is concerned, the course aims to develop in students the ability to orient themselves in the panorama of theoretical questions concerning communication and textuality, in its various dimensions and specific typologies. |

THE COURSE CONSISTS OF 6 CREDITS (CFU) AND WILL BE DIVIDED INTO TWO MODULES FOR A TOTAL OF 30 HOURS. IN PARTICULAR THERE WILL BE: A) A DEEPENING OF THE MAIN MODELS AND SYSTEMS OF COMMUNICATION; B) A DEEPENING OF THE ISSUES RELATED TO TEXT AND TEXTUAL LINGUISTICS. MODULE A: THE FIRST MODULE (OR MODULE A) IS THE SAME FOR ATTENDING AND NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS. IN THIS MODULE SOME ISSUES RELATED TO MODELS AND SYSTEMS OF COMMUNICATION (WHICH ARE OF CENTRAL IMPORTANCE FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO ACQUIRE MORE SKILLS IN THIS FIELD OF STUD) WILL BE DISCUSSED IN DEPTH. PARTICULAR EMPHASIS WILL BE PLACED ON THE FOLLOWING POINTS: (I) THE NOTION OF COMMUNICATION AND THE MAIN STUDY MODELS (ENGINEERING MODEL, SEMIOTIC MODEL, RELATIONAL MODEL); (II) THE SEMIOTIC APPROACH TO COMMUNICATION, WITH AN ENHANCED FOCUS ON SOME KEY CONCEPTS, SUCH AS SEMIOTICS, CODE, SIGN, PROPERTIES AND CLASSIFICATION OF CODES, ETC; (III) HUMAN COMMUNICATION AND NATURAL LANGUAGES: (IV) NEW MODELS OF COMMUNICATION: THE APPROACH OF COGNITIVE PRAGMATICS. MODULE B: THE SECOND MODULE (OR MODULE B) IS THE SAME FOR ATTENDING AND NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS. IN THIS MODULE PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE NOTION OF TEXT AND THE MAIN PROBLEMS FACED BY TEXTUAL LINGUISTICS. IN PARTICULAR, SPECIAL EMPHASIS WILL BE GIVEN TO THE FOLLOWING POINTS: (I) TEXT-CENTRED DISCIPLINES; (II) THE LINGUISTICS OF TEXT FROM ITS ORIGINS TO THE PRESENT DAY; (III) THE NOTION OF TEXT, DISCOURSE AND TEXT LINGUISTICS; (IV) THE STRUCTURE OF THE TEXT (ORGANISATION, SEMANTIC PROPERTIES, VARIETY, ETC.); (V) THE SEMANTIC SUBSTANCE OF THE TEXT (CONTEXT, IMPLICATURES, PRESUPPOSITIONS, ETC.); (VI) THE UNITS OF THE TEXT (INFORMATION UNITS, TEXTUAL MOVEMENT, ETC.); (VII) THE TEXTUAL CONNECTIONS (TEXTUAL RELATIONS, INTERWEAVINGS, COMPENSATIONS, ETC.); (VIII) COHERENCE AND COHESION; (IX) THE LOGICAL DIMENSION OF THE TEXT (CONNECTIVES, LOGICAL RELATIONS, LOGICAL ARCHITECTURE OF THE TEXT); (X) THE REFERENTIAL DIMENSION OF THE TEXT (CONNECTIONS, ANAPHORS, CATAPHORES, TOPIC PROGRESSION); (XI) THE ENUNCIATIVE DIMENSION OF THE TEXT (REPORTED SPEECH, DEIXIS, ETC.); (XII) TYPES OF TEXT (NARRATIVE TEXT, EXPOSITORY TEXT, ARGUMENTATIVE TEXT, DESCRIPTIVE TEXT, PRESCRIPTIVE TEXT); (XIV)THE LANGUAGE OF THE TEXT AND LINGUISTIC VARIATION (THE LANGUAGE OF NEWSGROUPS). |
Teaching Methods | |

THE COURSE PROVIDES 30 HOURS OF FRONTAL TEACHING DIVIDED INDICATIVELY INTO 10 HOURS FOR MODULE A AND 20 HOURS FOR MODULE B. DURING THE LESSONS STUDENTS WILL BE INVITED TO ACTIVELY INTERVENE THROUGH THE READING AND ANALYSIS OF TEXTS (PROVIDED BY THE TEACHER) BY IMPORTANT AUTHORS IN THE PROPOSED DIDACTIC PATH. FURTHERMORE, STUDENTS, ESPECIALLY IN THE SECOND MODULE, WILL BE INVITED TO CARRY OUT ACTIVITIES OF COLLECTION, OBSERVATION AND ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF LINGUISTIC TEXTS IN ORDER TO TEST THEIR TEXTUAL COMPREHENSION SKILLS. |

BOTH ATTENDING AND NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS WILL HAVE TO TAKE A WRITTEN EXAM WITH OPEN QUESTIONS ABOUT THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE COURSE. EVALUATION CRITERIA FOR THE FINAL WRITTEN EXAM WILL BE: 1) ABILITY TO ARTICULATE A WELL STRUCTURED TEXT 2) ABILITY TO ESTABLISH LINKS BETWEEN THE TOPICS ADDRESSED 3) ABILITY TO EXPRESS ONESELF CLEARLY AND USING AN APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE RELATED TO THE DISCIPLINE IN QUESTION. |
