KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE COURSE AIMS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS IN THE GRADUAL DEVELOPMENT OF A SOLID THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK THAT WILL ENABLE THEM TO:
-MASTER THE FUNDAMENTAL NOTIONS OF 'SIGN' AND 'CODE';
-RECOGNISE THE CONSTITUTIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF A SEMIOTIC CODE AND THE VARIETY OF SUCH CODES;
-RECOGNISE A NATURAL-HISTORICAL LANGUAGE AS A PECULIAR SEMIOLOGICAL CODE AND ANALYSE ITS MAIN FEATURES;
-TAKE A COMPLEX AND DYNAMIC VIEW OF VERBAL LANGUAGE AND LANGUAGE CREATIVITY;
-TAKE A COMPLEX AND DYNAMIC VIEW OF COMMUNICATIVE PROCESSES, IN PARTICULAR THOSE BASED ON VERBAL LANGUAGE;
-BE ABLE TO INTERWEAVE THE GENERAL SEMIOTIC CHARACTERISTICS OF LANGUAGES WITH THE ANALYSIS OF THE COGNITIVE PURPOSES AND INTERACTION THEY PERFORM;
-BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE BASIC ELEMENTS OF TEXTUAL LINGUISTICS AND THE STUDY OF THE CONCRETE REALISATIONS OF VERBAL LANGUAGE.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE COURSE AIMS TO DEVELOP STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO ORIENTATE THEMSELVES IN THE VAST WORLD OF SEMIOTICS; IN PARTICULAR, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-EXAMINE THE FUNDAMENTAL THEORETICAL ISSUES OF SEMIOTICS AND TO PLACE THEM, WITH A CRITICAL SPIRIT, IN THEIR HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT;
-IDENTIFY THE POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS OF SEMIOTICS, FROM THE NARRATIVE TEXT TO THE AUDIOVISUAL TEXT, TO THE HORIZONS OPENED UP BY THE NEW TECHNOLOGIES:
-ELABORATE THE THEORETICAL NOTIONS ACQUIRED, IN ORDER TO ORIENT THEMSELVES IN THE COMPLEX AND VARIED UNIVERSE OF THE CONCRETE REALISATIONS OF VERBAL LANGUAGE.

AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT
THE COURSE AIMS TO DEVELOP STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO:
-FORMULATE HYPOTHESES, ESTABLISH LOGICAL LINKS, ARGUE, COMPARE AND EVALUATE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SEMIOLOGICAL CODES;
-CRITICALLY SELECT THE INFORMATION SOURCES (BIBLIOGRAPHIC AND MULTIMEDIAL) FOR THE COMPARATIVE STUDY OF DIFFERENT SEMIOTIC CODES;
-PLACE AND CONSIDER SEMIOTIC PHENOMENA IN RELATION TO THE CULTURAL AND SPATIAL CONTEXTS OF REFERENCE AS WELL AS TO THEIR TEMPORAL DEVELOPMENT;
-BEING ABLE TO ORGANISE AND CRITICALLY EVALUATE THE COURSE CONTENTS.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE COURSE AIMS TO DEVELOP STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO:
-MAKE APPROPRIATE USE OF THE METALANGUAGE OF THE DISCIPLINE;
-ACQUIRE AWARENESS OF LANGUAGES AS MAIN COMMUNICATIVE TOOLS OF HUMAN COMMUNITIES;
-PRESENT AND DISCUSS, BY MEANS OF TEXTS OR VIRTUAL TOOLS, THE RESULTS OF THEIR OWN RESEARCH OR ELABORATIONS.

LEARNING ABILITY
THE COURSE AIMS TO DEVELOP STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO:
-USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS AND IT RESOURCES FOR THE PURPOSES OF ANALYSIS AND ARCHIVE;
-CARRY OUT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, TO UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET COMPLEX TEXTS OF VARIOUS TYPES, LITERARY, INSTITUTIONAL, PUBLICISTIC, ETC.;
-CONTINUOUSLY UPDATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE, USING TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE.
Prerequisites
No prerequisites are required.
