Roberto Scarpa has been professor of geophysics, SSD GEO/10, at the University of Salerno in the period 2001-2021. Graduated in Physics with honors at the University of Naples in 1974, he was previously researcher at the Vesuvius Observatory (1974-1985), associate professor at University of Rome (1985-1987) and professor at University of L'Aquila (1987-2001). In 1984 he was visiting professor at the University of Paris 7, Physical Science. He was/is a consultant and member of Science Council of many national and International organizations of Geophysics and Volcanology, including UNESCO, the European Union, the European Parliament, ECE Athens. In Italy he has been consultant of National Seismic Service, Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso-INFN, Abruzzo Scientific Park of Science and Technology, Scientific Council of Research Consortium at the Gran Sasso, International Institute of Volcanology-CNR and the Consortium for Research in Astrogeophysics. In 2006 he was appointed expert of MIUR PRIN projects in the field of Earth Sciences. He is author of over 180 scientific publications and several books on topics of Volcanology and Seismology (H Index Google Scholar 44 with more than 7300 citations). Since 2005 he was Director of the Reseearch Center on the Environment CISA, University of Salerno where he has been also Chairman of Scientific Committees in the fields of physics and Earth Sciences (FARB and CAR Commission 2). He has made important contributions in the development of data acquisition systems of geophysics, in Earth's structure studies including seismic tomography of areas of geodynamical interest of Italy and of Europe, and the seismotectonic study of Italy and of source parameters estimates of large Italian earthquakes, analysis of earthquake waveforms and seismic source studies in volcanic areas, developing systems for monitoring seismic and volcanic Central and South America (Ecuador and San Salvador). On these issues has been and is manager/coordinator of several research projects supported by Italian Institutions (PRIN1999 Projects, 2001 2003, 2005.2007, Project Dilatometers of CRdC / AMRA, Project UNDERSEIS INFN / LNGS) and international institutions (Project VOLUME VI FP EU). He is referee of many International journals international Science, Nature, Geophys. Res Lett, Geophys.J.Int., Journal of Geophys. Res, Bulletin of Seism. Soc. Am., Journal of Seismology.), as well as projects of national research (University of Siena, Padova and Bologna, INGV, CNR, MIUR) and international (CNRS, France and NSF,USA, GFZ, Germany, New Zealand).
