Objectives
GENERAL OBJECTIVE:
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE FURTHER KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN MORPHOSYNTACTIC ELEMENTS OF THE GERMAN LANGUAGE, DEEPENING THE STUDY OF SYNTACTIC-GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES, EXPANDING VOCABULARY AND ENHANCING ORAL AND WRITTEN COMMUNICATION SKILLS IN DIFFERENT CONTEXTS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF:
- THE STRUCTURE OF THE GERMAN SENTENCE;
- THE MAIN SENTENCE TYPES IN GERMAN;
- THE CONSTITUENTS OF THE SENTENCE;
- THE CLASSIFICATION OF WORDS AND TYPES OF SYNTAGMAS;
- THE SYNTACTIC AND SEMANTIC FUNCTIONS OF SYNTAGMAS IN THE GERMAN SENTENCE;
- GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES AND VOCABULARY OF INTERMEDIATE LEVEL GERMAN (REACHING LEVEL B1 OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE FOR LANGUAGES CEFR).

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- ANALYSE WRITTEN AND ORAL TEXTS OF VARIOUS KINDS AT AN INTERMEDIATE LEVEL (LEVEL B1 CEFR) FROM A PHONETIC-PHONOLOGICAL, MORPHOLOGICAL AND SYNTACTIC POINT OF VIEW;
- UNDERSTAND THE ESSENTIAL ASPECTS OF STANDARD CONVERSATIONS CONCERNING COMMON TOPICS OF EVERYDAY LIFE;
- PRODUCE INTERMEDIATE LEVEL ORAL AND WRITTEN TEXTS IN GERMAN (LEVEL B1 CEFR);
- TRANSLATE INTERMEDIATE LEVEL TEXTS FROM GERMAN INTO ITALIAN.

AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT:
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- RECOGNISE LOGICAL LINKS, ARGUE, COMPARE AND EVALUATE LINGUISTIC TEXTS.

COMMUNICATIVE SKILLS:
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- COMMUNICATE IN GERMAN (LEVEL B1 CEFR);
- REPORT ON THE LINGUISTIC PHENOMENA STUDIED;
- PRESENT THE RESULTS OF THEIR OWN WORK IN TEXTUAL FORM.

LEARNING SKILLS:
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS AND COMPUTER ANALYSIS RESOURCES.
Prerequisites
STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE PASSED THE EXAMS OF BOTH GERMAN LANGUAGE I AND GERMAN LITERATURE I.

- THE STRUCTURE OF THE GERMAN SENTENCE (6H);
- THE MAIN SENTENCE TYPES IN GERMAN (4H);
- THE CONSTITUENTS OF THE SENTENCE (4H);
- THE CLASSIFICATION OF WORDS AND TYPES OF SYNTAGMAS (4H);
- TREE DIAGRAMS (4H);
- WORD ORDER AT SENTENCE LEVEL (4H);
- THE SYNTACTIC AND SEMANTIC FUNCTIONS OF SYNTAGMAS IN THE GERMAN SENTENCE (6H);
- SUBORDINATE CLAUSES IN GERMAN (13H);
- GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES AND VOCABULARY OF INTERMEDIATE LEVEL GERMAN (REACHING LEVEL B1 OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE FOR LANGUAGES CEFR).
Teaching Methods
THE TEACHING INCLUDES 45 HOURS OF LECTURES, WHICH TAKE PLACE IN THE CLASSROOM, AND PRACTICAL LANGUAGE ACTIVITIES IN LANGUAGE LABS WITH NATIVE-SPEAKER LANGUAGE EXPERTS. SELF-STUDY ACTIVITIES IN PRE-ARRANGED LANGUAGE LABS ARE ALSO RECOMMENDED.
Verification of learning
ATTENDING-STUDENTS HAVE TO TAKE TWO WRITTEN TESTS DURING THE COURSE (TO TEST THEIR THEORY KNOWLEDGE ON THE CONTENT OF THE COURSE AND THEIR LINGUISTIC COMPETENCES) AND A FINAL ORAL EXAM.
NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS HAVE TO TAKE A WRITTEN AND AN ORAL FINAL EXAM.
STUDENTS WHO HAVE NOT EXCEEDED 20% ABSENCES WILL BE CONSIDERED AS ATTENDING.
ORAL EXAMINATION, WHICH CONSISTS OF A CONVERSATION IN GERMAN (LEVEL B1 QCER) CONCERNING COMMON TOPICS OF EVERYDAY LIFE AND AN ANALYSIS OF A SHORT WRITTEN TEXT IN GERMAN (LEVEL B1 QCER) FROM A SYNTACTIC POINT OF VIEW, IS ONLY POSSIBILE AFTER PASSING THE WRITTEN LANGUAGE TEST(S).
