THE COURSE IS DIVIDED IN TWO PARTS, THE FIRST ONE FOCUSED ON ORGANIZATIONAL THEORIES, THE SECOND ONE ON LABOUR SOCIOLOGY.
THE FIRST PART OF THE COURSE CONCERNS THE ORGANIZATIONAL THEORIES. THIS PART CONSIDERS BOTH THE MAIN THEORETICAL APPROACHES AND SOME SPECIFIC ORGANIZATIONAL ASPECTS, SETTINGS, AND ISSUES, AS POWER RELATIONS, TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT, COMMUNICATION, AND ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE. MORE PRECISELY, THE FOLLOWING ISSUES WILL BE ADDRESSED:
- RATIONALIST MODELS (BUREAUCRACY AND TAYLORISM)
- CRITICAL THEORIES OF THE RATIONAL APPROACHES
- SUBJECTIVATION TRANSITION AND THE BOUNDED RATIONALITY (BARNARD AND SIMON)
- POST-TAYLORIST THEORIES, FROM TOYOTISM TO WCM
- ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE
- ORGANIZATIONAL INNOVATION

THE SECOND PART OF THE COURSE WILL BE DEDICATED TO THE TRANSITION OF WORK AND EMPLOYMENT FROM INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION TO SERVICES AND TO THE SERVICE SECTOR’S OCCUPATIONAL STRUCTURE. AFTER A DISCUSSION ON THE NATURE AND VARIETY OF SERVICES, THE COURSE WILL DEAL WITH A SPECIFIC PART OF SERVICE SECTOR, I.E. THE SERVICES TO CONSUMERS, AND IN PARTICULAR WITH THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:
-NATURE OF SERVICES TO CONSUMERS AND THEIR OCCUPATIONAL AREA
-STRUCTURAL FEATURES OF LABOUR PATTERNS WITHIN SERVICES TO CONSUMERS
-LABOUR SPECIALIZATION IN THIS SECTOR; THE ‘SERVICE WORKERS’ AND THEIR WORKING CONDITIONS
-PROBLEMS OF SERVICE WORKERS’ REPRESENTATION
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS ORGANIZED WITH FRONTAL LECTURES, BUT STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE AND DEBATE ON SPECIFIC ISSUES.
Verification of learning
THE LEARNING PROCESS WILL BE VERIFIED WITH AN ORAL EXAM ON THE TWO COURSE TEXTS. THIS EXAM AIMS AT CHECKING STUDENTS’ KNOWLEDGE AND AN EVALUATION OF STUDENTS’ CAPACITY TO EXPLAIN AND SUMMARIZE SPECIFIC TOPICS.
THE EVALUATION OF STUDENTS’ KNOWLEDGE IS BASED ON THEIR CAPABILITY TO AUTONOMOUSLY ELABORATE THE THEORETICAL CONTENTS ILLUSTRATED DURING THE COURSE OR THROUGH TEXTS READING, MAKING ALSO EMPIRICAL EXAMPLES, AND ON THEIR ABILITY TO COMPARE DIFFERENT THEORIES ON SPECIFIC LABOR AND ORGANIZATIONAL ISSUES.
THE EVALUATION OF THE ATTENDEES WILL CONSIDER ALSO THEIR LEVEL AND QUALITY OF ACTIVE PARTICIPATION DURING THE LECTURES.
