THE WORKSHOP AIMS TO DEVELOP AND REFINE THE STUDENTS’ SKILLS IN THE ARTISTIC RENDERING OF A SELECTION OF TEXTS IN POETRY AND PROSE BY THE MOST IMPORTANT LATIN AUTHORS. IT WILL INVOLVE A SURVEY OF THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SOURCE LANGUAGE AS WELL AS A RE-EXAMINATION OF THE TECHNIQUES THAT ENABLE TO ADAPT THE ORIGINAL FORM AND CONTENT TO THE TARGET LANGUAGE WITHOUT EVER BETRAYING ITS MEANING (PRIMARY OBJECTIVE). ACCORDINGLY, THE WORKSHOP WILL AMOUNT IN THE FIRST PLACE TO AN EXERCISE IN UNDERSTANDING AND INTERPRETING THE SOURCE TEXT, WHILE ALSO FOCUSING ON THE ARTISTIC USE OF THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE AND COMPARING DIFFERENT VERSIONS FROM DIFFERENT TIMES OF THE SAME TEXTS. |

A SELECTION OF FIFTEEN TEXTS (SOME IN POETRY AND SOME IN PROSE) EXEMPLIFYING THE STYLISTIC AND LINGUISTIC VARIETY OF THE MAJOR LITERARY GENRES. THE SELECTION IS COMPRISED OF TEXTS BY PLAUTUS, TERENCE, CICERO, LIVY, SALLUST, TACITUS, CATULLUS, LUCRETIUS, VIRGIL, HORACE, PROPERTIUS, MARTIAL, ST. AUGUSTINE, POLITIAN, AND GIOVANNI PASCOLI. |

AFTER INTRODUCING THE KEY ISSUES ADDRESSED BY TRANSLATION THEORY, WE WILL ACTIVELY ENGAGE IN TRANSLATING A NUMBER OF EXEMPLARY LATIN TEXTS INTO ITALIAN AS WELL AS COMPARING (WHENEVER POSSIBLE) OUR OWN VERSIONS WITH THOSE PRODUCED BY DISTINGUISHED SCHOLARS AND WRITERS FROM DIFFERENT PERIODS. AS FAR AS OUR METHODOLOGY IS CONCERNED, THE WORKSHOP MAY BE BEST DESCRIBED AS A FORM OF ‘COOPERATIVE LEARNING’, THAT IS, A TARGET-ORIENTED ACTIVITY CARRIED OUT IN COLLABORATION BETWEEN STUDENTS AND TEACHER. |

AT THE END OF THE WORKSHOP ALL PARTICIPANTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO TRANSLATE IN ITALIAN A HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT LATIN TEXT IN ORDER TO TEST THEIR ABILITY TO MEDIATE BETWEEN THE TWO LANGUAGES IN A CREATIVE WAY. |
