Objectives
INTRODUCE ALL STUDENTS, INCLUDING THOSE WITHOUT CLASSICAL TRAINING, TO ANCIENT GREEK AND LATIN DRAMA, WITH SPECIAL ATTENTION DEVOTED TO ITS IMPACT ON MODERN THEATRE AND ITS FORMS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING.
TO LEARN, THROUGH A CRITICAL EXPLORATION OF KEY CONTEXTS AND MOMENTOUS TURNING POINTS IN THE HISTORY OF ANCIENT DRAMA, ITS MAIN TECHNICAL AND THEATRICAL DEVICES, AS WELL AS ITS VARIOUS FORMS AND GENRES.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENTS WILL BE EXPECTED TO ACCOUNT FOR THE MAIN STEPS IN THE EVOLUTION OF ANCIENT DRAMA, FROM THE ARCHAIC PERIOD IN GREECE TO THE IMPERIAL AGE IN ROME, ALSO PROVIDING AN ACCURATE READING OF A NUMBER OF PLAYS TO BE SET AGAINST THE LARGER CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL CONTEXT WITHIN WHICH THE PLAYS WERE PRODUCED AND PERFORMED.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS
STUDENTS WILL BE EXPECTED TO IDENTIFY THE ESSENTIAL FEATURES OF THE HISTORY OF THE THEATRE AND OF THE LITERARY GENRE TO WHICH ANY GIVEN WORK TRAGIC AND COMIC BELONGS

COMMUNICATION
THE STUDENTS WILL BE EXPECTED TO:
- PROVIDE A DESCRIPTION, BOTH TECHNICALLY RIGOROUS AND PERSONALLY CONSTRUCTED, OF THE MAIN STAGES IN THE HISTORY OF ANCIENT DRAMA;
- PRESENT THE TEXT OF BOTH A COMEDY AND A TRAGEDY, RESORTING TO THE INTERPRETIVE TOOLS OF CRITICISM, WITH SPECIAL ATTENTION DEVOTED TO ASPECTS SUCH AS THE THEATRICAL PRODUCTION AND PERFORMANCE;

LIFELONG LEARNING SKILLS
THE STUDENTS WILL BE EXPECTED TO:
- FAMILIARIZE WITH THE HISTORY OF ANCIENT DRAMA, SOPHISTICATED AND POPULAR ALIKE, DISPLAYING SOME AWARENESS OF THE EVOLUTION OF THE DIFFERENT FORMS AND GENRES OVER TIME;
- CRITICALLY ANALYSE THE TEXT OF BOTH A TRAGEDY AND A COMEDY, WITH SPECIAL ATTENTION DEVOTED TO THE MISE EN SCÈNE.

THE STUDENTS WILL CONSIDER ANCIENT DRAMA IN ITS MAIN ASPECTS, IN PARTICULAR BY STUDYING ITS HISTORICAL MAKING, BEGINNING WITH THE ORIGINS OF COMEDY AND TRAGEDY. THE APPROACH WILL COMBINE SYNCHRONIC AND DIACHRONIC PERSPECTIVE, DWELLING ON THE EVOLUTION OF DIFFERENT DRAMATIC FORMS OVER TIME, ON THEIR TRANSFORMATION WITHIN ROMAN CULTURE (WITHOUT NEGLECTING LESS CANONICAL FORMS DEVELOPED IN THE ITALIC CULTURAL CONTEXT SUCH AS THE ATELLANA, MIME, AND PANTOMIME).
BESIDES ASSIMILATING THE MATERIALS PROVIDED BY THE INSTRUCTOR, THE STUDENTS WILL BE EXPECTED TO READ A TEXT ON THE HISTORY OF ANCIENT DRAMA AS WELL AS A TRAGEDY AND A COMEDY.
