---|---|
AN EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE OF GREEK AND LATIN IS REQUIRED, MOST NOTABLY AN ABILITY TO TRANSLATE CORRECTLY (WITH THE AID OF A DICTIONARY) ANY CLASSICAL TEXT REGARDLESS OF ITS LITERARY GENRE. STUDENTS ARE ALSO EXPECTED TO BE FAMILIAR WITH THE MAIN TENETS OF THE PHILOLOGICAL METHOD, INCLUDING BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE TEXTUAL HISTORY OF THE CLASSICS IN BOTH THE GREEK AND THE LATIN WORLD. |
Contents | |
---|---|
THE COURSE IS DEVOTED TO THE GREEK AND LATIN AESOPIC FABLE; ITS MAIN AIM IS TO OUTLINE THE HISTORY OF THIS FORM OF FOLK LITERATURE FROM ITS ORIGINS TO THE MIDDLE AGES. A GOOD SELECTION OF AESOP’S FABLES (ED. CHAMBRY), AND PHAEDRUS’ FABLES (ED. ZAGO) , ARE TO BE READ., ALONG WITH THE SO "VITA AESOPI" RED. G (ED. FERRARI). |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
THE COURSEWORK CONSISTS OF CLASSROOM-TAUGHT LECTURES, IN WHICH VARIOUS MATERIALS ARE PRESENTED (IN DIGITAL FORMS AS WELL AS PPT FORMAT) TO ILLUSTRATE THE MAIN PRINCIPLES OF THE PHILOLOGICAL METHOD AND THEIR BEARING ON THE CASE IN POINT, THAT IS, THE AESOPIC FABLE. AMONG THE TOPICS ADDRESSED: THE MATERIAL ASPECTS OF THE TEXTUAL TRANSMISSION (PAPYRI, CODICES, INCUNABULA, AND PRINTED EDITIONS) AND THE PROCEDURES TO BE FOLLOWED IN ORDER TO PRODUCE A CRITICAL EDITION (FROM THE INITIAL STAGE OF RECENSIO, THROUGH THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE GENEALOGICAL RELATIONS AMONG THE WITNESSES, TO THE CONSTITUTIO TEXTUS AND EMENDATIO). OTHER TOPICS INCLUDE HOW TO DRAFT A CRITICAL APPARATUS (INCLUDING THE RELEVANT TECHNICAL VOCABULARY), HOW TO APPLY THE PRINCIPLES OF EDITORIAL TECHNIQUE, AND HOW TO CLASSIFY DIFFERENT TYPES OF ERROR. BESIDES THE LECTURES, THE COURSE INCLUDES SEMINAR SESSIONS IN WHICH ALL STUDENTS ARE TO PLAY AN ACTIVE ROLE; MORE SPECIFICALLY, THEY ARE REQUIRED TO PRESENT A PAPER ON A TOPIC RELATED TO THE MAIN SUBJECT OF THE COURSE, IN WHICH THEY MAKE USE OF BOTH THE TECHNICAL METHODS AND THE SCHOLARLY LEARNING THEY HAVE ACQUIRED. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE ASSESSMENT TAKES PLACE IN TWO STAGES: (1) A MIDTERM EXAM REVOLVING AROUND THE PAPER AND DESIGNED TO ALLOW A FIRST ASSESSMENT OF THE STUDENT’S SKILLS AND COMPETENCES, WHILE ALSO BRINGING OUT ANY PROBLEM OR DEFICIENCY; (2) A FINAL ASSESSMENT IN THE FORM OF AN ORAL EXAMINATION COVERING THE WHOLE COURSEWORK. EXAMINATIONS ARE GRADED ACCORDING TO A SCALE RANGING FROM 0 TO 30, WITH 18 AS A PASS MARK. THE MINIMUM PASSING GRADE (18/30) IS AWARDED TO ANY STUDENT WHO DEMONSTRATES A BARELY ADEQUATE FAMILIARITY WITH THE BASICS OF CLASSICAL SCHOLARSHIP ON BOTH THE LINGUISTIC AND PHILOLOGICAL LEVEL, AS WELL AS BETRAYING A SUPERFICIAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE TEXTS AND QUESTIONS ADDRESSED THROUGHOUT THE COURSE, OR FAILING TO ARTICULATE THEM ADEQUATELY EITHER IN ORAL OR WRITTEN FORM. THE MAXIMUM GRADE (30/30, POSSIBLY CUM LAUDE) IS AWARDED TO ANY STUDENT WHO DEMONSTRATES A THOROUGH AND IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF BOTH METHODS AND MATTERS, AS WELL AS SUCCEEDING IN ARTICULATING THE TOPICS UNDER DISCUSSION WITH AN OUTSTANDING COMMAND OF LANGUAGE AND A CAPACITY FOR INDEPENDENT THINKING, ALSO IN REFERENCE TO CONTEXTS NOT IMMEDIATELY RELATED TO THOSE ADDRESSED BY THE TEACHER. |
