Objectives
The course introduces architectures, technologies and protocols for Internet of Things, showing the main applications.

Knowledge and understanding
Architecture of an IoT application. Standards for information exchange. Network protocols. Standards for the main application domains.

Applying knowledge and understanding
Use of an IoT protocol stack implementation for the development of simple applications.

Prerequisites
It is recommended the previous knowledge of the Java language.

As a strict prerequisite, the student must have passed the course "Reti di calcolatori".
Contents
Introduction. Internet of things and Web of things.

Architecture of an IoT application. Edge computing and fog computing.

Standards for information representation and interchange.

Network protocols for IoT. Low-power wireless networks. CoAP, MQTT, ZeroMQ.

Standards for the main application domains. Environment monitoring. Energy management. Medical and healthcare applications. Building and home automation. Transportation. Consumer/wearable devices.

Software stacks for IoT applications.
Teaching Methods
The course includes theory lessons and guided exercises aimed at demonstrating the use of tools and software stacks for the realization of IoT applications.

In order to participate to the final assessment and to gain the credits
corresponding to the course, the student must have attended at least 70%
of the hours of assisted teaching activities.
Verification of learning
The exam is composed by a team projectwork (for 3-4 persons teams) and an oral interview. The projectwork aims at evaluating the ability to build a simple application based on the tools presented in the course, while the interview evaluates the understanding of the theoretical topics.
