Objectives
THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF QUALITATIVE ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY AND FURNISH THEM THE BASIS FOR PRACTICAL APPLICATION. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE METHODS DESCRIBED IN THE EUROPEAN PHARMACOPOEIA AND APPLY THEM IN LABORATORY PRACTICE. MOREOVER, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO ACQUIRE THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL KNOWHOW IN THE FIELD OF INSTRUMENTAL ANALYSIS.
AT THE END OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO MANAGE THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF MOLECULES OF PHARMACEUTICAL INTEREST, TO SUCCEED IN THE PRACTICAL IDENTIFICATION OF THE FUNCTIONAL GROUPS OF ORGANIC MOLECULES AND IN THE IDENTIFICATION OF INORGANIC COMPOUNDS. MOREOVER, THE STUDENT WILL ACHIEVE THE ABILITY TO DETERMINE THE ANALYTICAL PROFILE OF DRUGS REPORTED IN THE EUROPEAN PHARMACOPOEIA.
Prerequisites
TO LEARN, UNDERSTAND AND EMPLOY THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE IS MANDATORY TO HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE FOLLOWING COURSES: CHIMICA ANALITICA, ANALISI CHIMICO-FARMACEUTICA I, CHIMICA ORGANICA I AND ALL THE I YEAR EXAMS
Contents
•LABORATORY SAFETY AND SECURITY BEST PRACTICE GUIDELINES
•DEFINITION AND EXAMINATION OF SUBSTANCES CHARACTERS AND RELATIONSHIP WITH THEIR STRUCTURE
•DEFINITION AND EXAMINATION OF SUBSTANCES PHYSICAL PROPERTIES AND SOLUBILITY AND RELATIONSHIP WITH THEIR STRUCTURE
•QUALITATIVE ELEMENTAL ANALYSIS: LASSAIGNE, AND BEILSTEIN TESTS
•QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF INORGANIC COMPOUNDS: TESTS TO BE MADE DIRECTLY ON THE POWDER; SYSTEMATIC IDENTIFICATION OF ANIONS AND CATIONS.
•IDENTIFICATION OF FUNCTIONAL GROUPS IN ORGANIC COMPOUNDS: HYDROCARBONS, AROMATIC COMPOUNDS, ALCOHOLS AND PHENOLS, CARBONYL COMPOUNDS, CARBOXYLIC ACIDS AND DERIVATIVES. CARBOHYDRATES, AMMINES, NITROCOMPOUNDS AND AMINOACIDS.
•QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF COMPOUNDS OF PHARMACEUTICAL INTEREST: ALKALOIDS, BENZODIAZEPINES, BARBITURATES, STEROIDS.
•APPLICATION OF SPECTROSCOPICALLY BASED METHODS IN THE EUROPEAN PHARMACOPOEIA
Teaching Methods

THE COURSE (10 CFU) INVOLVE 80 HOURS OF FRONTAL LESSONS AND 40 HOURS OF SINGLE PRACTICE EXERCISE IN THE LABORATORY.
FRONTAL LESSONS ARE PROVIDED IN CLASSROOM WITH THE HELP OF DIGITAL MEDIA AND DEAL WITH ALL THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE.
THE SINGLE PRACTICE EXERCISES ARE SCHEDULED IN THE TEACHING LAB AND DEAL WITH TOPICS SELECTED FROM THE ONES CONSIDERED IN THE TEACHING CLASS. THE ATTENDANCE OF THE TEACHING LAB IS MANDATORY AND TO BE ADMITTED AT THE FINAL EXAM THE ATTENDANCE AT LEAST TO THE 70% OF THE PRACTICE EXERCISES SCHEDULED IS REQUIRED.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE AIMS OF THE COURSE WILL BE ASSERTED SUCCESS IN AN EXAMINATION.
THE EXAMINATION INVOLVES A WRITTEN AND AN ORAL TEST, SCHEDULED IN DIFFERENT DAYS.
THE WRITTEN TEST, WHICH IS PREPARATORY TO THE ORAL TEST, IS MADE UP OF SIX GENERAL QUESTIONS AND LAST 90 MINUTES (MAXIMUM). THE AIM OF THE WRITTEN TEST IS TO VERIFY IF THE MINIMAL OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE HAS BEEN ACHIEVED.
THE ORAL TEST INVOLVE OF A DISCUSSION WITH THE AIM TO ATTEST THE STUDENT LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE ON THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE AND TO PROVE THE STUDENT SKILLS IN THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF THE INFORMATION. MOREOVER, THE PURPOSE OF ORAL TEST IS TO ASCERTAIN THE STUDENT COMMUNICATIVE SKILLS.
THE RESULT OF THE EXAM WILL TAKE IN ACCOUNT BOTH ORAL AND WRITTEN TESTS AND THE RESULTS ACHIEVED DURING THE TEACHING LAB. THE RESULT WILL BE NOT NECESSARY THE EXACT MATHEMATICAL AVERAGE OF ALL SCORES.
