Objectives
OVERALL OBJECTIVE
THE TEACHING AIMS ARE IN LINE WITH THE OVERALL GOAL OF THE UNDERGRADUATE COURSE, WHICH IS TO TRAIN A QUALIFIED FIGURE IN THE FIELD OF MONITORING, ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF NATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC RISKS AND LAND MANAGEMENT.

MODULE OF GEOSCIENCES FUNDAMENTALS (PROF. DOMENCIO GUIDA ; PROF. ALBINA CUOMO):
THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO TWO INTEGRATED MODULES: GEOLOGY (MODULE I) AND GEOMORPHOLOGY (MODULE II).
ITS GENERAL GOAL IS TO TRAINING OF A PROFESSIONAL WITH BASIC SKILLS IN ENVIRONMENTAL RISK MANAGEMENT AND LAND MANAGEMENT.
IN DETAIL, THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS TO SUPPLY THE STUDENT WITH KNOWLEDGE, AND THE ABILITY TO APPLY THIS KNOWLEDGE, OF THE BASIC CONCEPTS AND COGNITIVE TOOLS USEFUL IN RECOGNISING THE PHYSICAL LANDSCAPE AND THE RELATED PROCESSES AND TO SUPPORT THE CHOICE OF IMPROVEMENT TECHNIQUES AND INTERVENTIONS AIMED AT PROTECTING ENVIRONMENTAL AND NATURAL RESOURCES.
THEREFORE, THE FIRST MODULE HAS THE GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF PROVIDING BASIC KNOWLEDGE ABOUT PLANET EARTH: ITS STRUCTURE, CONSTITUTION AND DYNAMICS, IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND ITS HISTORY AND EVOLUTION.
THE SECOND MODULE, ON THE BASIS OF THE FIRST MODULE, AIMS TO PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE OF THE LANDFORMS AND THE PRINCIPLES FOR RECOGNISING THE GEOMORPHIC PROCESSES THAT HAVE GENERATED THEM AND THAT MODIFY THEM OVER TIME.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING (DUBLIN DESCRIPTOR N.1)

THE AIM OF THE TEACHING IS ALSO TO GIVE THE STUDENT THE TOOLS FOR ELABORATING AND/OR APPLYING INNOVATIVE IDEAS, POSSIBLY ALSO IN RESEARCH AREAS, TO TRANSFER THE CLASSICAL TOPICS OF EARTH SCIENCES TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONTINUOUS INTERACTION BETWEEN PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL-BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES.
FINALLY, THE COURSE INTENDS TO PROVIDE THE STUDENT WITH THE USEFUL KNOWLEDGE TO UNDERSTAND AND ADDRESS CUTTING-EDGE TOPICS IN THE FIELD OF:
- WIDE AREA PLANNING AND GEOMORPHOLOGICAL MAPPING RELATED TO SPECIFIC ENDOGENOUS AND/OR EXOGENOUS PROCESSES;
- THE KNOWLEDGE OF PROCESSES CONNECTED TO THE DYNAMICS OF PLANET EARTH WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE ONGOING ENVIRONMENTAL DYNAMICS.

APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING (DUBLIN DESCRIPTOR N.2)

THE TEACHING AIMS TO ENABLE THE STUDENT TO DEVISE AND SUPPORT DISCUSSIONS THAT ADDRESS THE ISSUES INVOLVED:
- THE ACQUISITION OF ADEQUATE SKILLS IN THE RECOGNITION OF THE EARTH'S CONSTITUENT MATERIALS, THE STRUCTURE OF THE EARTH'S CRUST AND THE RECONSTRUCTION OF GEOLOGICAL EVENTS ON THE BASIS OF THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED (MODULE I);
- SKILLS IN READING AND INTERPRETING LANDFORMS ON TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS AND FROM IMAGES;
- SKILLS IN THE IDENTIFICATION, RECOGNITION AND DELIMITATION ON TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS AND FROM IMAGES OF LANDFORMS: UNDERSTANDING OF THE GEOMORPHIC PROCESSES RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR FORMATION AND EVOLUTION (MODULE II) THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF LEARNED THEORETICAL CONCEPTS
- RECONSTRUCTION OF THE TEMPORAL AND SPATIAL EVOLUTION OF GEOMORPHOLOGICAL PROCESSES RELATING TO THE REGIONAL TERRITORY OF CAMPANIA.
THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE WILL ALLOW THE STUDENT TO SOLVE PROBLEMS, IN NEW (UNFAMILIAR) AND INTERDISCIPLINARY CONTEXTS, CONCERNING THE RECENT-CURRENT EVOLUTION OF OUR PLANET, SEARCHING FOR CONTINUOUS CONNECTIONS WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE CAMPANIA REGION FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE DYNAMICS AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS IN PROGRESS, WITH SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO HYDROGEOLOGICAL RISK.

AUTONOMOUS JUDGEMENT (DUBLIN DESCRIPTOR N.3)

THE COURSE AIMS TO ENABLE THE STUDENT TO COLLECT AND INTERPRET RELEVANT DATA THROUGH EXCURSIONS AND PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE IN RELATION TO PROBLEMS CONNECTED WITH HYDROGEOLOGICAL RISK (EXCURSIONS IN FLUVIAL ENVIRONMENTS) OR VOLCANIC RISK (EXCURSION IN A VOLCANIC ENVIRONMENT SUCH AS THE SOMMA VASUVIUS). IN DETAIL, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO COMBINE HIS OR HER KNOWLEDGE AUTONOMOUSLY SO AS TO MANAGE THE COMPLEXITY OF ISSUES RELATING TO THE COMPLEX INTERACTIONS BETWEEN GEOLOGICAL PROCESSES AND LAND RISKS BY FORMULATING JUDGEMENTS, EVEN WITH PARTIAL DATA, IDENTIFYING METHODOLOGICALLY APPROPRIATE PATHS TO DESCRIBE, INTERPRET AND DISCUSS THE INTERRELATIONS BETWEEN NATURAL AND ANTHROPIC RESOURCES.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS (DUBLIN DESCRIPTOR N.4)
THE COURSE WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO COMMUNICATE, TO SPECIALISTS AND NON-SPECIALISTS ALIKE, CONCEPTS AND CONCLUSIONS, AS WELL AS THE LOGIC BEHIND THEM, RESULTING FROM THE KNOWLEDGE THEY HAVE ACQUIRED, IN RELATION TO THE FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS OF THE STUDY TOPICS, BOTH IN TERMS OF THE THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL-APPLICATION ASPECTS ACQUIRED IN THE GEOLOGY AND GEOMORPHOLOGY MODULES. THE DISCUSSIONS DURING THE THEORETICAL LECTURES AND THE REPORTS RELATING TO THE FIELD EXPERIMENTS CONTRIBUTE TO THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THIS OBJECTIVE.

LEARNING CAPACITY (DUBLIN DESCRIPTOR N.5)

THIS COURSE WILL PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE NECESSARY SKILLS FOR SELF-DIRECTED AND AUTONOMOUS STUDY, ENABLING THEM TO FIND INDIVIDUAL PATHS TO ADDRESS THE COMPLEX AND MULTIDISCIPLINARY PROBLEMS RELATING TO THE EARTH SCIENCES AND THE TRANSVERSAL LINKS WITH NATURAL HAZARDS AFFECTING THE TERRITORY. THIS OBJECTIVE IS FURTHERED BY THE INDICATION OF READINGS AND WEB RESOURCES PURSUED BY MEANS OF RIGOROUS SCIENTIFIC MATERIAL.

Prerequisites
THE STUDENT MUST HAVE ACQUIRED THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE IN THE EARTH SCIENCES, PHYSICS, AND CHEMISTRY PROVIDED BY THE STANDARD HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULUM.
