Objectives
TEACHING AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH A SET OF SPECIFIC CATEGORIES AND TECHNIQUES FOR ANALYZING SOCIAL BEHAVIORS, PHENOMENA, AND INSTITUTIONS IN A WAY THAT DEVELOPS KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS THAT ARE ALSO APPLICABLE IN BOTH DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL AND POLICY CONTEXTS.

1. BIOLOGICAL AND ANTHROPOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF SOCIALITY AND HUMAN CULTURE.
THE EVOLUTION OF THE HUMAN ANIMAL. THE LIFE CYCLE OF HUMANS. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF HUMAN CULTURES. RELATIONS BETWEEN POPULATIONS. SOCIAL EVOLUTION AND RISKS OF INVOLUTION (20 HOURS).
2. SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES.
FUNCTIONALISM. CONFLICT THEORY. HISTORICAL MATERIALISM. EXCHANGE THEORY. INTERACTIONISM. ETHNOMETHODOLOGY. STRUCTURALISM AND POST-STRUCTURALISM. PRESENT AND FUTURE OF SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY (20 HOURS)
3. SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS AND THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD.
SOCIAL STRATIFICATION. ECONOMY AND SOCIETY. POLITICS AND POLICY. POPULATION, URBANIZATION AND SOCIAL CHANGE (20 HOURS).
4. SOCIAL SCIENCE METHODOLOGY.
SCIENTIFIC METHOD AND SOCIAL RESEARCH. TRADITIONS OF SOCIAL RESEARCH. QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE RESEARCH. CONCEPTS, INDICATORS, INDICES, VARIABLES (20 HOURS).

LESSONS, SEMINARS AND EXERCISES OF BOTH INDIVIDUAL AND COLLECTIVE CHARACTER.
Verification of learning
THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF AN INTERVIEW ON THE CONTENT OF THE COURSE. ITS PURPOSE IS TO ASSESS THE ACQUISITION OF THE KNOWLEDGE IMPARTED. PARTICIPATION IN EXERCISES (WITH VOTING RIGHTS) OR SEMINARS THAT LEAD TO EXEMPTION FROM PART OF THE EXAMINATION PROGRAMME IS OPTIONAL.
