THE AIM OF THIS TEACHING IS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL AWARENESS OF THE GREAT PROCESSES OF MODERNISATION WHICH ARE BORN IN THE MODERN EUROPEAN STATES AND OF THEIR CONSEQUENCES ON POLITICS, LAW, RELIGION, ECONOMY, SOCIAL ORGANIZATION AND EDUCATION. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: STUDENTS ACQUIRE THE CAPACITY TO CONTEXTUALIZE EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES IN THE SOCIAL LIFE, CAPACITY WHICH CAN BE BASED ONLY ON A SUFFICIENT KNOWLEDGE OF ITALIAN, MEDITERRANEAN AND WESTERN HISTORY.THROUGH THE STUDY OF HISTORICAL PROCESSES OF THE MODERN AGE, THE PURPOSE IS TO OBTAIN A SUFFICIENT KNOWLEDGE OF THE INSTITUTIONAL, CULTURAL AND ECONOMIC FACTORS OF THE MODERN SOCIETY. IT’S IMPORTANT THE CAPACITY OF HISTORICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS OF THE TERRITORY IN WHICH EDUCATIONAL ACTION IS SITUATED AND A KNOWLEDGE OF THE POLITICAL AND CONSTITUTIONAL PRINCIPLES OF ITALIAN INSTITUTIONS. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: STUDENTES OF EDUCATIONAL SCIENCES SHOULD APPLY HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE OF ITALIAN SOCIETY, ECONOMY AND TERRITORY, IN THE CONTEXT OF SINGLE CASES AND THEIR HISTORIES, IN ORDER TO BE FUNCTIONAL TO CARRY OUT SOCIO-EDUCATIONAL PLANS. THE COURSE, THEREFORE, THROUGH THE STUDY OF HISTORICAL DYNAMICS RELATING TO MAIN EVENTS AND IDEAS DEVELOPED BETWEEN THE END OF THE 15TH AND THE BEGINNING OF THE 19TH CENTURY, MAKES TO PROVIDE THE CAPACITIES TO ANALYSE CRITICALLY HISTORICAL EVENTS, EVALUATING CAUSES, INTERRELATIONS AND DEVELOPMENTS, TO PERFORM COMPARISONS AND CONTEXTUALIZATIONS IN DIACHRONIC AND SYNCHRONIC PERSPECTIVE, IN ORDER TO ARGUE CORRECTLY. |

THE COURSE PROMOTES AN ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE OF INSTITUTIONS, TERRITORY, SOCIETY AND CULTURE IN WHICH THE FUTURE GRADUATE SHOULD OPERATE, FOR GIVING HIM CONSCIOUSNESS, CRITICAL AND INTERPRETATIVE CAPACITIES, TO BE FUNCTIONAL TO SOCIO-EDUCATIONAL PROJECTS . THE COURSE AIMS TO ADDRESS A CRITICAL STUDY OF THE MAIN EUROPEAN HISTORICAL EVENTS FROM THE LATE FIFTEENTH CENTURY TO THE LATE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY, IN REFERENCE TO THE POLITICAL, INSTITUTIONAL, SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS ASPECTS. A PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE RESERVED TO THE PERIOD OF THE SPANISH SUPREMACY IN EUROPE AND IN ITALY, WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF A TRANSNATIONAL SYSTEM, IN WHICH THE UPPER CLASSES CAN EXPAND POWER AND INFLUENCE, BOTH IN A LOCAL AND EUROPEAN DIMENSION: AN INTERESTING CASE-STUDY IS GIVEN BY THE PRINCES ACQUAVIVA IN THE SOUTHERN ITALY. THE MAIN SUBJECTS WILL BE: EARLY MODERN STATE; FRENCH-SPANISH WARS IN THE 16TH CENTURY; PROTESTANT REFORMATION; COUNTER-REFORMATION AND CATHOLIC REFORMATION; PHILIP II’S AGE: SPANISH IMPERIAL SYSTEM, FRANCE, ENGLAND, HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE; SPANISH ITALY IN THE 16TH AND 17 TH CENTURY; ECONOMIC CRISIS, WAR AND INTERNATIONAL POLICY IN THE 17TH CENTURY; ENGLISH REVOLUTIONS; ABSOLUTISM AND “ANCIEN RÉGIME”: LOUIS XIV’S FRANCE AND EUROPE; SPANISH SUCCESSION WAR IN THE 18TH CENTURY: ITALY AND EUROPE; ENLIGHTENED ABSOLUTISM AND REFORMS IN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY EUROPE AND ITALY; AMERICAN REVOLUTION; FRENCH REVOLUTION; PRINCES ACQUAVIVA IN HABSBURGIC EUROPE. |

FINAL ORAL EXAMINATION VERIFIES OBJECTIVES ABOUT KNOWLEDGE, CORRECT LANGUAGE, CRITICAL CAPACITIES. IT CONSISTS IN QUESTIONS ON THE SUBJECTS SUBMITTED DURING THE LESSONS AND REPERIBLE IN THE PRESCRIPTED BOOKS. IT CHECKS THE LEARNING OF THE CONTENTS, THE DISCUSSION CAPACITY, THE APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE. |
