Stefano CASTIGLIONE Curriculum
Stefano Castiglione (born in Pavia, Italy in 1961, was graduated (1985) in Biological Science at the at the Dept. of Genetics, University of Pavia. In 1988-1990 he was postdoctoral fellow at the Enichem America’s Laboratories in Princeton-NJ (research on genetic transformation of tobacco and corn with insecticidal and fungicidal activity genes). In 1990, back in Italy, he worked as a researcher at the Guido Donegani Institute (Novara-IT). From 1991 until 1999, he held a contract as Biologist at the Dept. of Genetics, Univ. of Pavia and then at the Dept. of Biology, Univ. of Milano (researches on molecular analysis of the plant genome and of the somaclonal variation in transgenic plants). In 1999 he obtained a permanent position as Researcher at the Dept. of Biology, Univ. of Milano, and in October 2005 he became Associate Professor of Botany at the Dept. of Chemistry at the University of Salerno. Since October 2015 at present, he is full Professor of Botany at the Dept. of Chemistry and Biology at the University of Salerno, where he teaches the courses of “Botany” and of “Applied Biology and Biodiversity”. He is Head of the Courses of Study in Environmental Sciences. During the last decade of professional activity he focused his attention on the molecular analysis of biodiversity in species and clones of poplar present in natural and cultivated habitats, as well as on their use for phytoremediation of inorganic and organic polluted environments. During the last years, he was also interested in the effects of fertilization with compost compared to mineral on horticultural varieties characterized by high genetic diversity. He was Scientific Coordinator of the Research Units in two PRIN projects and he has been involved in a project funded by the Italian Ministry of Environment entitled “Research and development in biotechnology applied to the protection of the environment”. S. Castiglione was also national coordinator of two OIGA (2009-2013) projects financed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry. Moreover, he was coordinator of the work package relative to genetic biodiversity of ancient horticultural ecotypes of the Campania Region (AGRIGENET project, 2009 to 2015) and also scientific coordinator of TUSERUMONA project on genetic biodiversity of olive in Campania region (Italy). He was also coordinator the Project Leader of a study financed by Campania focused on phytoremediation of urban, industrial and agricultural lands contaminated by heavy metals, entitled “Phytoremediation of urban, industrial and agricultural land contaminated by heavy metals using tolerant poplar clones”. Actually, he is Scientific Coordinator of the Research Unit of University of Salerno for two research projects. As Scientific Coordinator of the project "Correlazione salute ambiente" (CO.S.A.) in collaboration with the Department of Public Health of the University of Naples Federico II, he deals with the biomonitoring of the areas at risk of high incidence of chronic diseases localized through geo-referencing of health data. As Scientific Coordinator the "FoodNet" Project in collaboration with the Department of Biotechnology and Biosciences of the University of Milano Bicocca, he aims to the development of a cultivation system with low environmental impact (reduced water intake), which involves a high production of secondary metabolites of hypoglycaemic interest (steviol, steviosidi, fructans and inulins) from the organs of different plant species (e.g., Stevia rebaudiana).
