Objectives
TO PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE ON: - SOIL-PLANT INTERACTIONS AIMED AT THE POSSIBILITY OF USING PLANTS AND RHIZOSPHERE MICROORGANISMS FOR THE DECONTAMINATION OF SOIL, WATER AND AIR. - BASIC CONCEPTS ON THE BIODIVERSITY OF LIVING ORGANISMS LINKED TO EVOLUTIONARY PROCESSES, TO ENSURE THAT THE STUDENT IS ABLE TO ELABORATE AND APPLY IDEAS IN A CONTEXT OF THE RESEARCH TIGHTLY ASSOCIATED TO PHYTOREMEDIATION AND TO BIODIVERSITY OF LIVING BEINGS. TO SOLVE PROBLEMS RELATED TO ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION OF SOIL, WATER AND AIR CONSIDERING THE INTEGRATION OF MULTIFACTORIAL AND INTERDISCIPLINARY SKILLS RELATIVELY TO BIODIVERSITY AND PHYTOREMEDIATION. INTEGRATING KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED DURING THE COURSE OF APPLIED BIOLOGY AND BIODIVERSITY WITH THOSE OF PREVIOUS REFERRED TO VARIOUS AREAS OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO MANAGE THE COMPLEXITY OF THE ISSUES INVOLVED AND GIVE ADEQUATE SOLUTIONS EVEN IN SOME CASES CONSIDERING PARTIAL AND INCOMPLETE DATA. STUDENTS MUST BE IN A POSITION, AT THE END OF THE COURSE, OF DRAWING CONCLUSIONS AND GIVING POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS PRESENTED THEM ON THE BASIS OF THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED AND DEVELOPED, POSSIBLY IN AUTONOMY, AND THEN TO COMMUNICATE TO SPECIALISTS AND NOT. TO STUDY AND DEAL WITH ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS AND QUESTIONS INVOLVING PROCESSES FOR CLEANING OF SOIL, WATER AND AIR THROUGH PHYTOREMEDIATION ASSOCIATED TO BIODIVERSITY OF LIVING ORGANISMS.
Prerequisites
THE STUDENT MUST HAVE ACQUIRED THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF BOTANY, MICROBIOLOGY, GENETICS, MOLECULAR BIOLOGY, COMPUTER SCIENCE, ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY, ENGLISH LANGUAGE.
Contents
THE COURSE WILL FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS: BIODIVERSITY AND EVOLUTION; HIERARCHICAL LEVELS OF BIODIVERSITY: ECOSYSTEM; SPECIES; GENES (3H). ESTIMATION OF ECOSYSTEM BIODIVERSITY: THE CONCEPT OF BIOMA (2H). DIVERSITY OF SPECIES: DEFINITION AND METHODS FOR ITS ESTIMATION (2H). SPECIES RICHNESS AND PHYLOGENETIC DIVERSITY. PHYLOGENETIC RECONSTRUCTION AMONG SPECIES (3H). ESSENTIAL CONCEPTS FOR THE STUDY OF GENETIC DIVERSITY: GENES, ALLELES, HETEROZYGOUS, HOMOZYGOUS, GENOTYPE, PHENOTYPE, POPULATION CONCEPT, ETC. (2H) POPULATION GENETICS (2H). THE ORIGIN OF GENETIC VARIABILITY: DNA MUTATIONS. THE HARDY-WEINBERG LAW (2H). GENETIC EQUILIBRIUM AND EVOLUTIVE FORCES (2H). MOLECULAR MARKERS AND GENETIC INDEXES FOR DIVERSITY ESTIMATION (2H). MASS EXTINCTIONS. HOT-SPOTS OF BIODIVERSITY (2H). BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION STRATEGIES (2H). PHYTOREMEDIATION TECHNOLOGIES (2H). SOIL MICROORGANISMS (EG MYCORRHIZAL FUNGI, PLANT GROWTH PROMOTER BACTERIA, ENDOPHYTES) AND THEIR ROLE IN THE RECLAMATION OF POLLUTED ENVIRONMENTAL MATRICES (6H).
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE PROVIDES CLASSROOM LESSONS ILLUSTRATING THE ARGUMENTS OF THE COURSE, AND LABORATORY ACTIVITIES AIMED AT THE SCREENING OF PLANT GENOTYPES, SPECIES AND/OR VARIETIES TOLERANT TO DIVERSE POLLUTANTS (ORGANIC AND/OR INORGANIC); AT STUDYING THE GENETIC BIODIVERSITY OF PLANT GENOTYPES, SOIL AND RHIZOSPHERE MICROORGANISMS USEFUL FOR POLLUTANT PHYTOREMEDIATION.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE WILL BE VERIFIED BY MEANS OF I) IN ITINERE TESTS, CONSISTING IN A POWERPOINT PRESENTATION AND CRITICAL DISCUSSION OF ORIGINAL SCIENTIFIC PAPERS FOCUSED ON THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE; II) POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS, AT THE END OF THE COURSE, ON A PROJECT, ELABORATED BY THE STUDENT, BASED ON THE USE OF BIODIVERSITY AND PHYTOREMEDIATION FOR RECLAMATION OF CONTAMINATED AREAS, AND ON SCIENTIFIC PAPERS RELATED TO THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE. THE FINAL EXAM WILL AIM TO VERIFY THE ABILITY OF THE STUDENTS TO DESIGN A PHYTOREMEDIATION PROJECT, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE CAPACITY OF SYNTHESIS AND EXPOSITION RELATIVE TO THE ILLUSTRATED ARGUMENTS, AND THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE REGARDING THE TOPICS PROPOSED BY THE TEACHER DURING THE COURSE.
