Objectives
THE AIM OF THIS PHD TEACHING IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH AN OVERVIEW OF WHAT THE PLANT MICROBIOME IS AT THE PHYLLOSPHERE AND RHIZOSPHERE LEVEL, WHAT INTERACTIONS EXIST BETWEEN THE PLANT AND THE SOIL, WHAT ARE THE COMMUNITIES OF MICROORGANISMS PRESENT IN THE SOIL AND HOW THEY RELATE TO THE ORGAN OF THE PLANT WHICH DEVELOPS AND ANCHORS THE PLANT TO THE GROUND, I.E. THE ROOT. WHAT ARE THE STRATEGIES AND MECHANISMS THAT THE PLANT ADOPTS TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE MICROORGANISMS OF THE SOIL, NOURISH THEM AND THEN SUBJECT THEM TO THEIR OWN NEEDS IN ORDER TO GUARANTEE BOTH GREATER HEALTHINESS, AS WELL AS SUPERIOR RESILIENCE AND TOLERANCE OF BOTH BIOTIC AND ABIOTIC STRESSES TO WHICH THE PLANT UNDERGOES DURING ITS VEGETATIVE AND REPRODUCTIVE CYCLE. FURTHERMORE, THE MOLECULAR MECHANISMS THAT THE PLANT HAS EVOLVED FOR THE ACQUISITION OF THE MAIN MACRO- AND MICRO-NUTRIENTS WILL BE ILLUSTRATED, AND WHAT FUNCTIONS THE CATEGORY OF PLANT GROWTH PROMOTING MICROORGANISMS (PGPR) PERFORM IN THIS CONTEXT AND HOW PGPR IMPROVE HEALTH AND PLANT GROWTH.
Prerequisites
STUDENTS MUST HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF THE STRUCTURE OF CYTO-HISTOLOGY AND ANATOMY OF HIGHER PLANTS, NOTIONS OF MICROBIOLOGY AS WELL AS BASIC GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY. ALL KNOWLEDGE PROVIDED BY THE COURSES OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES COMMONLY PROVIDED BY ALL UNIVERSITIES THAT CONTEMPLATE THESE TWO DEGREE COURSES.
Contents
THE COURSE WILL ILLUSTRATE: I) WHAT IS MEANT BY RHIZOSPHERE, PHYLLOSPHERE OF A HIGHER PLANT ORGANISM (ANGIOSPERMS); II) THE PLANT AND ITS MICROBIOME: A COEVOLVED META-ORGANISM; III) WHAT IS THE RHIZOSPHERE OF THE PLANT; IV) WHAT EFFECTS THE RHIZOSPHERE PRODUCES ON THE SOIL ENVIRONMENT; V) WHAT RHIZODEPOSITIONS CONSIST OF; THE MECHANISMS BY WHICH PLANTS DAMAGE SHAPE TO THE MICROBIAL COMMUNITY IN THE RHIZOSPHERE; VI) WHAT IS THE PLANT-GOVERNED SELECTION PROCESS OF BACTERIA AND OF THE METABOLITE EXCHANGE NETWORK IN THE RHIZOSPHERE; VII) PLANT-MICROBE INTERACTIONS AND RHIZOSPHERIC FEEDBACK; VIII) WHAT ARE PLANT GROWTH PROMOTING RHIZOBACTERIA (PGPR) AND WHAT FUNCTIONS DO THEY PERFORM FOR THE WELL-BEING AND HEALTH OF THE PLANT.
Teaching Methods
THE TEACHING METHODS IN WHICH THE COURSE IS ORGANIZED ARE OF TWO TYPES: FRONTAL LESSONS (FOUR HOURS) AND SEMINARS (FOUR HOURS), IN THIS CASE HELD BY TEACHERS WHO ARE EXPERTS IN THE TOPICS COVERED BY THIS DOCTORAL TEACHING.

Verification of learning
THE EVALUATION OF THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENTS WILL FOCUS ON THE PRESENTATION OPERATED BY THE STUDENTS OF A RESEARCH PROJECT THAT HAS AS A TARGET AND TAKES ITS CUE FROM THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE TEACHING BY THE TEACHER AND BY THE EXPERTS WHO ATTENDED THE COURSE.
Texts
SCIENTIFIC PAPERS AVAILABLE IN DATABASES ACQUIRED THROUGH A BIBLIOGRAPHIC SEARCH THAT CONCERN THE TOPICS PRESENTED BY THE TEACHER AND BY THE EXPERTS WHO INTERVENED DURING THE COURSE.
