Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE A GENERAL OVERVIEW OF POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY, COVERING BOTH ITS HISTORICAL EVOLUTION AND THE MOST RELEVANT CONTEMPORARY ISSUES. IN THIS CONTEXT, WE WILL EXAMINE SOME OF THE GREAT CLASSICS AND KEY CONCEPTS THAT HAVE SHAPED OUR UNDERSTANDING OF SOCIETY AND POWER, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO HOW MODERN POLITICAL VOCABULARY IS ACTIVE IN OUR CURRENT TIMES.

THE COURSE IS STRUCTURED INTO TWO MODULES, WHICH ARE AUTONOMOUS YET CLOSELY INTERCONNECTED. THE FIRST MODULE CONSISTS OF A SURVEY OF THE MAIN MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY PHILOSOPHICAL-POLITICAL DOCTRINES. IN THIS CONTEXT, CONCEPTS SUCH AS SOVEREIGNTY, FREEDOM, POWER, SUBJECTIVITY, DEMOCRACY, EQUALITY, INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS, AND SOCIAL JUSTICE WILL BE ANALYZED AND DISCUSSED.

REGARDING THE SECOND MODULE, THE COURSE WILL OFFER AN ANALYSIS OF "THE REBEL" BY ALBERT CAMUS. EXTRAORDINARILY RELEVANT IN ITS CRITIQUE OF THE IDEOLOGICAL IDOLATRIES THAT DOMINATE CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY, THE TEXT PRESENTS AN IDEA OF "REBELLION," INSPIRED BY SOUTHERN THOUGHT, TO BE CONSIDERED IN CONTRAST TO THE EXTREMIST DRIFTS AND POLITICAL POLARIZATIONS TYPICAL OF OUR TIMES. CAMUS'S CONCEPT OF "REBELLION," UPHELD BY A BALANCE BETWEEN OPPOSITES AND NOURISHED BY THE PRODUCTIVE CROSS-CONTAMINATIONS TYPICAL OF THE MEDITERRANEAN AND ITS HISTORY, AIMS TO DEFEND FUNDAMENTAL VALUES WHILE AVERTING THE DANGERS HIDDEN IN A REBELLIOUS DENIAL THAT FORGETS ITS HUMAN ROOTS.
Teaching Methods
THROUGH THE COMPARISON OF VARIOUS CONCEPTS PRESENTED AND ILLUSTRATED, STUDENTS ARE CONSISTENTLY ENCOURAGED TO DEVELOP ANALYTICAL AND ARGUMENTATIVE SKILLS AIMED AT ACHIEVING ADEQUATE AUTONOMOUS JUDGMENT. FROM THE VERY FIRST LESSONS, STUDENTS ARE STIMULATED TO ENGAGE IN ONGOING DIALOGUE IN ORDER TO ASSESS AND ENHANCE THEIR ABILITY TO EXPRESS THEIR VIEWPOINTS WITH PROPER LANGUAGE USE AND CONCEPTUAL RELEVANCE. IN ADDITION TO INTERACTIONS WITH THE INSTRUCTOR, STUDENTS ARE ALSO INVITED TO ENGAGE IN MUTUAL DIALOGUE TO STIMULATE LOGICAL-ARGUMENTATIVE, RELATIONAL, AND EXPRESSIVE SKILLS. FINALLY, STUDENTS WILL BE ENCOURAGED, THROUGH THE USE OF EXAMPLES AND HYPOTHETICAL SITUATIONS, TO TAKE A STANCE BY DEVELOPING INDIVIDUAL THESES FORMED OVER THE COURSE OF THE STUDY.
