Objectives
TO PROVIDE ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE ON THE ANTHROPOGENIC ALTERATIONS OF ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS AND ON THE APPROACHES TO THE BIOMONITORING OF THE THREE ENVIRONMENTAL COMPARTMENTS. TO PROMOTE A RATIONAL AND INDEPENDENT APPROACH TO TACKLE ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES AND TEACH HOW TO DEFINE AND CARRY OUT PROJECTS ON MONITORING AND CONTROLLING THE STRUCTURAL AND FUNCTIONAL ASPECTS OF ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS, WITH A VIEW TO MANAGING AND PRESERVING NATURAL, ALTERED AND CONSTRUCTED ENVIRONMENTS. DEVELOPING THE ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE IN THE SPECIFIC LANGUAGES OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL DISCIPLINES IMPLIED IN MONITORING AND MANAGEMENT OF ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS, ALSO THROUGH THE CONSULTATION OF INTERNATIONAL REFERENCE LITERATURE FOR CONTINUOUS SCIENTIFIC AND METHODOLOGICAL UPDATES.
Prerequisites
WITH A VIEW TO PROPERLY UNDERSTANDING AND PRACTICALLY APPLYING THE TOPICS COVERED IN THE COURSE, EXCELLENT FOUNDATIONS OF ECOLOGY AND GOOD SKILLS IN ENVIRONMENTAL DATA PROCESSING ARE CRUCIAL REQUIREMENTS.
Contents
THE COURSE INCLUDES 8 HOURS OF TEACHING, AIMED AT ANSWERING THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:
1) WHAT NEEDS TO BE ANALYZED AND WHY;
2) WHICH ARE THE APPROACHES TO EMPLOY;
3) HOW TO PROCESS THE DATA AND UNDERSTAND THE RESULTS;
4) WHICH ARE THE POSSIBLE ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN.
THE SUBJECTS THE COURSE DEALS WITH ARE: SAMPLING, MEASUREMENT, QUALITY, TREATMENT AND INTERPRETATION OF ECOLOGICAL DATA IN CLASSICAL ACTIVE AND PASSIVE BIOMONITORING STUDIES, TROUGH BIOINDICATION AND BIOACCUMULATION, OF NATURAL, ALTERED AND CONSTRUCTED ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS. MOREOVER, NEW CHALLENGING BIOMONITORING APPROACHES (NEXT-GENERATION BIOMONITORING) FINALIZED TO MANAGEMENT, CONSERVATION, REMEDIATION AND RECOVERY OF TERRESTRIAL AND AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS WILL BE TREATED.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF 8 TEACHING HOURS (1 ECT) REPRESENTED BY FRONTAL LESSONS GIVEN WITH THE HELP OF SLIDES AND SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE PAPERS.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN ORAL EXAMINATION, MARKED WITH A VALUE JUDGMENT (INSUFFICIENT, SUFFICIENT, GOOD, EXCELLENT). THE EXAMINATION AIMS AT EVALUATING THE CAPABILITY OF THE STUDENT TO EXPLAIN, IN AN ORGANIC WAY, THE TREATED TOPICS. OVERALL, IT ALLOWS ASSESSING BOTH KNOWLEDGE AND CAPABILITY TO APPLY THE REACHED COMPETENCES, AS WELL AS TO ELABORATE SOLUTIONS IN COMPLETE AUTONOMY.
Texts
THE DIDACTIC MATERIAL (SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS, BOOKS TO CONSULT, SLIDES...) WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE DURING THE COURSE.
More Information
REGULAR ATTENDANCE AT THE LESSONS IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED
