Objectives
EXPECTED TRAINING ACHIEVEMENTS AND COMPETENCES TO BE ACQUIRED:
LEARNING THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONING OF TERRESTRIAL AND AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS, AIMED AT THE MONITORING OF ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS, THE PREVENTION OF ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTERS AND THE SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS:
ACQUIRING THE CONCEPTUAL MEANS TO UNDERSTAND THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONING OF THE HIERARCHICAL LEVELS OF ECOLOGICAL ORGANIZATION (FROM ORGANISMS TO ECOSYSTEMS) IN NATURAL AND IMPAIRED CONDITIONS, AS WELL AS THE ECOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ENVIRONMENTAL SPHERES (ATMOSPHERE, HYDROSPHERE, PEDOSPHERE) AND THEIR ANTHROPOGENIC ALTERATIONS.

CAPABILITY TO PUT IN PRACTICE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
ACQUIRING THE COMPETENCES AND DEVELOPING THE NECESSARY EXPERTISE TO ADDRESS THE STUDY OF ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS THROUGH MODELING APPROACHES AND THE ACQUISITION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING DATA.

JUDGEMENT INDEPENDENCE:
RAISING THE AWARENESS AND DEVELOPING THE NECESSARY EXPERTISE TO UNDERSTAND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AND DEVELOP PRAGMATIC APPROACHES FOR THEIR ANALYSIS AND SOLUTION.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
LEARNING TO UNDERSTAND AND COMMUNICATE THROUGH THE ECOLOGICAL JARGON, ALLOWING FRUITFUL EXCHANGES WITH DIVERSE PROFESSIONALS DEALING WITH ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECOLOGICAL ISSUES.

LEARNING SKILLS:
DEVELOPING THE NECESSARY COMPETENCES FOR THE AUTONOMOUS ACQUISITION OF INFORMATION FROM THE SCIENTIFIC REFERENCE LITERATURE, KEEPING THE PACE OF THE ONGOING SCIENTIFIC AND METHODOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS.
Prerequisites
FUNDAMENTALS OF PHYSICS, INORGANIC CHEMISTRY AND ORGANIC CHEMISTRY ARE REQUIRED TO UNDERSTAND AND MASTER MOST OF THE TOPICS.
Contents
THE COURSE PROVIDES 60 HOURS OF TRAINING, BOTH IN CLASSROOMS AND IN THE FIELD, FOCUSED ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:
- THE HIERARCHICAL LEVELS OF ECOLOGICAL ORGANIZATION: ORGANISM, POPULATION, COMMUNITY, ECOSYSTEM, LANDSCAPE (6 HOURS);
- ECOLOGICAL FACTORS, ECOLOGICAL NICHE, HABITAT (3 HOURS);
- ECOSYSTEM STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONING, ECOSYSTEM SERVICES, NATURAL CAPITAL (8 HOURS);
- ECOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ENVIRONMENTAL SPHERES: ATMOSPHERE, HYDROSPHERE, PEDOSPHERE (15 HOURS);
- URBAN-INDUSTRIAL ECOSYSTEMS AND AGROECOSYSTEMS (6 HOURS);
- MAIN ANTHROPOGENIC PRESSURES ON ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS (12 HOURS);
- ORGANISMS’ ROLES IN INTEGRATED ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING SYSTEMS AND IN ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION APPLICATIONS: BIOMONITORING AND BIOREMEDIATION (5 HOURS);
- NATURE CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT (5 HOURS).
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE PROVIDES 60 HOURS OF TRAINING (6 ECT), ARTICULATED INTO 50 HOURS OF CLASSROOM LESSONS (5 ECT) AND 10 HOURS OF LESSONS IN THE FIELD (1 ECT). THE CLASSROOM LESSONS ARE SUPPORTED BY PRESENTATIONS, WHEREAS THOSE IN THE FIELD BY THE USE OF INSTRUMENTATION. ATTENDING THE LESSONS IS MANDATORY.

Verification of learning
ACHIEVEMENT OF THE COURSE OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAM, WITH A GRADE EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS AND WITH LAUDE IF POSSIBLE. THE EXAM GENERALLY CONSISTS OF AN ORAL TEST LASTING APPROXIMATELY 30-60 MINUTES AND IS PASSED WITH A MINIMUM MARK OF 18/30.
THE TEST IS AIMED AT VERIFYING THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO PRESENT, IN AN ORGANIC MANNER, THE COURSE TOPICS AND ALLOWS EVALUATING BOTH THE STUDENT’S CAPABILITY TO LEARN AND UNDERSTAND, TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED SKILLS, AND TO INDEPENDENTLY LEARN AND DEVELOP SOLUTIONS.
DURING THE ORAL EXAMINATION, TOPICS RELATING TO THE TEACHING CONTENT WILL BE DISCUSSED AND THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO MAKE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE TOPICS WILL BE ASSESSED.
THE MINIMUM MARK (18/30) IS GIVEN WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS LIMITED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY TO MAKE CONNECTIONS AMONG THE TOPICS. THE MAXIMUM MARK (30/30) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A COMPREHENSIVE AND DETAILED KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS AND IS ABLE TO MAKE CONNECTIONS AMONG THEM.
