Objectives
THIS TEACHING IS AIMED AT OBTAINING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE PRINCIPLES OF MACROMOLECULAR CHEMISTRY, AND OF BIOMATERIALS AND THEIR PHARMACEUTICAL APPLICATIONS.
THE STUDENT APPLYING THE ACQUIRED SKILLS WILL HAVE TO BE ABLE TO DEAL WITH SYNTHESIS AND CHOICE OF MACROMOLECULES AND BIOPOLYMERS OF PHARMACEUTICAL INTEREST.
Prerequisites
THE STUDENT MUST HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF GENERAL CHEMISTRY AND ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
Contents
THE COURSE IS ORGANIZED IN FOUR SECTIONS:

SECTION 1:
OVERVIEW OF POLYMERIC MATERIALS. CLASSIFICATION OF POLYMERS. THE POLYMERS AND THE TEMPERATURE. COMPOSITION AND MOLECULAR MASSES. SYNTHESIS OF MACROMOLECULES. BIOMATERIALS, CLASSIFICATION. POLYMERIC BIOMATERIALS: POLYAMIDES, POLYESTERS, POLYOLEFINS, POLYURETHANES AND POLYUREAS, POLYACRYLATES, FLUORINATED POLYMERS, BIODEGRADABLE POLYMERS. PHARMACEUTICAL APPLICATIONS OF BIOMATERIALS. (2 CFU)

SECTION 2: CHARACTERIZATION OF POLYMERIC MATERIALS.
LABORATORY DEMONSTRATIONS. INTRODUCTION TO THE TECHNIQUES OF THERMAL CHARACTERIZATION (DSC, TGA); PHYSICO-CHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION (RX, IR, UV-VIS); EVALUATION OF THE MOLECULAR WEIGHT (GPC). (1 CFU)

SECTION 3: MODELING.
OVERVIEW OF THE SIMULATION METHODS. MOLECULAR DYNAMICS. TECHNIQUES CHEMO-INFORMATICS. APPLICATIONS (1 CFU)

SECTION 4: PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION OF ASSIGNED PROJECTS. (1 CFU)
Teaching Methods
TEACHING INCLUDES 40 HOURS OF LECTURES AND EXERCISES (5 CFUS). IN PARTICULAR, THERE ARE 32 HOURS OF CLASSROOM LESSONS (4 CFUS) AND 8 HOURS OF LABORATORY GUIDED EXERCISES (1 CFU).
THE COURSE IS ORGANIZED AS FOLLOWS:
CLASSROOM LESSONS ON ALL SUBJECTS OF THE COURSE;
EXERCISES IN THE GENERAL CHEMISTRY LAB WHERE POLYMERIZATION REACTIONS AND THE MAIN POLYMERS CHARACTERIZATION TECHNIQUES ARE ILLUSTRATED.
MODE:
STUDENTS WILL BE DIVIDED INTO GROUPS (MAXIMUM 10 STUDENTS PER GROUP) AND WILL FOLLOW 2 GUIDED EXERCISES OF 4 HOURS EACH.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN ORAL EXAM. THE EXAM PROVIDES FOR AN ORAL EXAMINATION, INCLUDING THE PRESENTATION OF A TECHNICAL REPORT PRODUCED BY THE STUDENT INDEPENDENTLY OR IN A GROUP ON A TOPIC INDICATED BY THE TEACHER. THE TEST IS CONSIDERED TO BE PASSED WITH A MINIMUM VOTE OF 18/30. THE ORAL TEST WILL ALSO ALLOW STUDENTS TO VERIFY THE STUDENT'S COMMUNICATION SKILLS WITH LANGUAGE OWNERSHIP AND AUTONOMOUS EXPOSURE ORGANIZATION ON THE SAME SUBJECTS WITH THEORETICAL CONTENT.
Texts
DURING THE COURSE INFORMATION AND HANDOUTS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED ON THE BOOKS TO CONSULT.
