Objectives
GENERAL OBJECTIVE
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE BASIC CONCEPTS, METHODS AND TOOLS OF THE DISCIPLINE, IN ITS ANALYTICAL AND SYNTHETIC COMPONENTS, WITH THE RECONSTRUCTION, AT DIFFERENTIATED SCALES, OF THE PROCESSES UNDERLYING THE VARIOUS FORMS OF INTERACTION BETWEEN ANTHROPIC ACTION AND NATURE IN EUROPEAN AND EXTRA-EUROPEAN TERRITORIAL CONTEXTS, FOR THE TRAINING OF CRITICAL OBSERVATION SKILLS IN THE PRESENCE OF CONTEMPORARY ISSUES AND PROBLEMS, WHICH CAN ALSO BE USED IN PROFESSIONAL FIELDS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
- HISTORICAL-SCIENTIFIC ASSUMPTIONS AND EPISTEMOLOGICAL STATUS OF HUMAN GEOGRAPHY.
- BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF PHYSICAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC GEOGRAPHY.
- ESSENTIAL GEOGRAPHIC CONCEPTS (SPACE, LANDSCAPE, REGION, LOCATION, DIRECTION, DISTANCE, SCALE)
- BASIC ELEMENTS OF CARTOGRAPHY, GEO-CARTOGRAPHY AND READING OF STATISTICAL GRAPHS.
- MATERIAL AND IMMATERIAL FORMS OF INTERACTION AND SPATIAL BEHAVIOR.
- POPULATION GEOGRAPHY: WORLD PATTERNS AND REGIONAL TRENDS.
- ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY.
- URBAN SYSTEMS AND STRUCTURES.
- POLITICAL ORGANIZATION OF SPACE.
- THE ANTHROPIC IMPACT ON NATURAL SYSTEMS AND THE CONCEPT OF SUSTAINABILITY

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THROUGH THE STUDY OF THE DISCIPLINE, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- USE AND GRAPHICALLY REPRESENT SPATIAL DATA.
- ANALYSE GEOGRAPHIC PHENOMENA AND INTERPRET THEM IN A CONTEXTUALIZED WAY.
- TO CORRELATE DISCIPLINARY THEMES WITH PROBLEMS AND PERSPECTIVES OF A CONTEMPORARY NATURE.
- EVALUATE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MAN AND ENVIRONMENT, ENVIRONMENTAL INTERACTION AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, FORMS OF CULTURAL DYNAMISM.

AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT
- THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE THE FOLLOWING TRANSVERSAL SKILLS:
- COMPARE IDEAS AND HYPOTHESES IN RELATION TO THEMES OF REFLECTION AND STUDY.
- TO DEEPEN AND DISCERN RELEVANT THEMES WITH RESPECT TO MORE GENERAL PHENOMENA ADDRESSED.
- MAKE A SELECTION OF DATA OR SOURCES FOR THE ACHIEVEMENT OF RESEARCH AND IN-DEPTH OBJECTIVES.

COMMUNICATIVE ABILITY
THE STUDENT WILL KNOW:
- ORGANIZE STUDIES AND RESEARCH RESULTS IN DOCUMENTARY, GRAPHIC AND ICONOGRAPHIC VERSIONS.
- BRIEFLY REPORT THE RESULTS OF COLLECTIVE OR INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH AND STUDIES.
- DEAL WITH PARTICIPATION IN GROUP WORK.

LEARNING ABILITY
- THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- CONSULT AND USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS AND COMPUTER RESOURCES FOR ANALYSIS AND ARCHIVING
- TO BE UPDATED INDEPENDENTLY OBTAINING FROM THE HERITAGE OF SCIENTIFIC SOURCES (MAGAZINES, MONOGRAPHS, CONGRESS PROCEEDINGS, ETC.).
Prerequisites
1) CONSOLIDATED KNOWLEDGE OF ITALIAN LANGUAGE, WRITTEN AND ORAL.
2) BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF MEDIEVAL, MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY HISTORY.
3) BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF GENERAL GEOGRAPHY.
Contents
STARTING FROM THE KEY CONCEPTS OF GEOGRAPHY, SUCH AS THE SPACE, THE PLACE, THE SCALE, THE TERRITORY, THE LANDSCAPE, WE WANT TO ANALYZE OBJECTS AND TERRITORIAL PROCESSES. THEREFORE WE'LL ANSWER, WITH THE AID OF THE LANGUAGE OF GEOGRAPHICITY, TO THE FIVE KEY QUESTIONS OF THE DISCIPLINE ("WHO", "WHAT", "WHERE", "WHEN", "WHY"), BOTH AT THE GLOBAL AND LOCAL SCALE, RELATING TO THE DYNAMICS OF THE POPULATION AND TO THE CHALLENGES OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. SPECIFICALLY, THE PROGRAM WILL COVER THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:

1) GENERAL NOTIONS OF GEOGRAPHY
2) BASIC NOTIONS OF HUMAN GEOGRAPHY
3) CARTOGRAPHY
4) ROOTS AND MEANING OF CULTURE
5) INTERACTION AND SPATIAL BEHAVIOR
6) POPULATION: WORLDWIDE MODELS AND REGIONAL TRENDS
7) TERRITORIAL ECONOMIC STRUCTURES: PRIMARY ACTIVITIES
8) MEANS OF SUPPORT AND ECONOMY
9) URBAN SYSTEMS AND URBAN STRUCTURES
10) POLITICAL ORGANIZATION OF SPACE
11) HUMAN IMPACT ON NATURAL SYSTEMS
Teaching Methods
1) FRONTAL LESSONS, WITH AID OF SLIDES AND GEO-CARTOGRAPHIC MATERIALS
2) EXERCISES OF READING AND COMMENT OF GEOGRAPHICAL MAPS OF VARIOUS TYPOLOG
Verification of learning
THE EXAMINATION INVOLVES THE CARRYING OUT OF A WRITTEN TEST IN PRELIMINARY TO THE ORAL EXAMINATION. THE STUDENT MUST DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY HAVE ACQUIRED THE FOLLOWING KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
1. MAIN TOOLS AND LANGUAGES OF GEOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS.
2. MASTERY OF THE TOPICS ANALYZED DURING THE LESSONS.
3. READING AND COMMENTING ON DIFFERENT TYPES OF GEOGRAPHIC MAPS AND OF A SPECIFIC TOPOGRAPHIC MAP.
Texts
1) M.D. BJELLAND, D. R. MONTELLO, A. GETIS, COMPENDIO DI GEOGRAFIA UMANA (PER GLI STUDENTI DI LETTERE), MCGRAWHILL, 2020.
2) LUPIA PALMIERI, PAROTTO, IL GLOBO TERRESTRE E LA SUA EVOLUZIONE, ED. BLU (SECONDA EDIZIONE). THE CHAPTERS TO STUDY WILL BE INDICATED BY THE TEACHER DURING THE LESSONS.
3) TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS (SUPPLIED BY THE TEACHER).
4) THE TEACHER WILL PROVIDE A REFERENCE BIBLIOGRAPHY FOR ADDITIONAL READINGS AND FURTHER INFORMATION.
