Objectives
The course intends to offer students the tools necessary to know and understand design, engraving and graphic art between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries. The aim is to trace their history by contextualizing them within the course of European history.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student will acquire the appropriate technical lexis and, through specific case studies, the knowledge necessary to be able to analyse a graphic work and its evolution through time.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student will be able to move with sufficient dexterity across the various graphic media, analyzing and understanding their specificities, recognizing artists and geographical areas, correlating works to the Italian and European context of provenance.

Contents
TEACHING WILL EXAMINE THE VARIOUS FORMS OF REPRODUCTION OF WORKS OF ART IN THE MODERN AGE, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF ENGRAVING TECHNIQUES AND THE BIOGRAPHIES OF THE LEADING ARTISTS WORKING IN ROME IN THE SIXTEENTH AND SEVENTEENTH CENTURY. IT WILL STUDY THE CIRCUIT OF PRINTERS IN RELATION TO THE PHENOMENON OF THE ART MARKET AND THE PRESENCE OF FOREIGN ARTISTS, MAINLY FRENCH, DUTCH AND FLEMISH, WHOM CONTRIBUTED SIGNIFICANTLY TO SPREADING THE WORKS OF ITALIAN ART IN EUROPE THROUGH TRADE PRINTS. IT WILL EXAMINE A CASE STUDY: THE DRAWINGS OF BERNINI. TO ENABLE STUDENTS EFFECTIVE LEARNING, THROUGH DIRECT EXAMINATION OF THE WORKS DESIGNED AND ENGRAVED, WILL BE AGREED INSPECTION OF COLLECTIONS OF GRAPHIC AND MEETINGS WITH SPECIALISTS.

FRONTAL LESSONS. CLASS ATTENDANCE IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Verification of learning
An oral exam will assess the acquisition of the specific competences, the degree of historical, methodological and critical knowledge, and the mastery of the technical language of the field achieved through a reading of the texts in the reference bibliography.
