GENERAL OBJECTIVE THE COURSE AIMS TO INTRODUCE THE STUDENT TO THE KEY CONCEPTS OF MOLECULAR BIOLOGY. THE MAIN TOPICS OF THE COURSE ARE PRESENTED IN THE ORDER THAT FOLLOWS THE FLOW OF GENETIC INFORMATION IN PROKARYOTIC AND EUKARYOTIC CELLS KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSIVE ABILITY THE STUDENT: - WILL KNOW THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE MOLECULAR STRUCTURE OF NUCLEIC ACIDS AND THE ORGANIZATION AND EVOLUTION OF THE PROKARYOTIC AND EUKARYOTIC GENOME; - WILL KNOW THE ENZYMES THAT CATALYZE THE MOLECULAR MECHANISMS UNDERLYING DNA REPLICATION, REPAIR AND RECOMBINATION, THE TRANSCRIPTION AND TRANSLATION OF GENES AND THE REGULATION OF GENE EXPRESSION. IN ORDER TO FACILITATE THE UNDERSTANDING OF THESE MOLECULAR MECHANISMS, THE COURSE HIGHLIGHTS THE PROKARYOTIC PROCESSES; - WILL UNDERSTAND THE EFFECT OF GENE MUTATIONS ON THE SYNTHESIS OF THE ENCODED PROTEIN; - WILL UNDERSTAND THE INTERDEPENDENT NATURE OF THE MOLECULAR PROCESSES THAT ACT IN UNISON TO KEEP CELLS ALIVE. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - EXAMINE A GENE SEQUENCE, IDENTIFY THE OPEN READING FRAME OF A GENE AND DEDUCE THE CORRESPONDING AMINO ACID SEQUENCE; - APPLY THE PRINCIPLES OF MOLECULAR CLONING TO PRODUCE LARGE AMOUNTS OF A RECOMBINANT DNA; - ISOLATE AND PURIFY PLASMID DNA FROM HOST BACTERIAL CELLS; PREPARE AND PERFORM GEL ELECTROPHORESIS IN ORDER TO SEPARATE DNA FRAGMENTS OBTAINED WITH RESTRICTION ENZYMES. INDEPENDENCE OF JUDGMENT THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - INDEPENDENTLY EVALUATE WHETHER A DIAGNOSTIC OR EXPERIMENTAL METHOD IS APPROPRIATE FOR THE ANALYSIS OR STUDY OF A PATHOLOGY. -DEVELOP A CRITICAL SENSE AND REASONING IN THE EVALUATION AND CHOICE OF AN EXPERIMENTAL METHOD. - ACQUIRE OBSERVATION, REFLECTION AND DISCUSSION SKILLS OF DATA OBTAINED FROM LABORATORY EXPERIENCES. COMMUNICATION SKILL THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - SUSTAIN A DISCUSSION ON THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE, BOTH THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL, USING LANGUAGE THAT IS APPROPRIATE FOR THE LEVEL OF STUDY; - REPRESENT AND COMMUNICATE THROUGH TEXTS, DRAWINGS/SKETCHES OR VIRTUAL TOOLS, KNOWLEDGE OF THE COURSE TOPICS, MAKING USE OF INTERPRETATIVE MODELS. LEARNING ABILITY THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS TO UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET COMPLEX TEXTS OF A TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC NATURE; - PREPARE AN EXPERIMENTAL LABORATORY PROTOCOL; -COLLECT, COMPARE AND ANALYZE DATA OBTAINED FROM LABORATORY EXPERIENCES; -DEVELOP A HABIT OF CONSTANTLY UPDATING KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED AND POSSESS THE METHODOLOGICAL BASES FOR THE ACQUISITION OF NEW KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS. |

THERE ARE WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAMINATIONS TO BE TAKEN AT THE END OF THE COURSE THAT WILL TEST WHETHER THE STUDENT HAS ATTAINED THE COURSE OBJECTIVES. THE STUDENT MUST PASS THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO TAKE PART IN THE ORAL EXAMINATION. THE MINIMUM PASSING SCORE IS 18/30. THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION, WHICH COMPRISES A MULTIPLE CHOICE TEST BASED ON THE COURSE WORK, PRECEDES THE ORAL EXAMINATION AT THE ORAL EXAMINATION, THE STUDENT WILL BE EVALUATED ON THE BASIS OF THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED OF THE MAIN ARGUMENTS OF THE COURSE. IN THE FINAL EVALUATION A MAXIMUM OF 30 POINTS WILL BE AWARDED. HONORS MAY BE AWARDED TO STUDENTS WHO DEMONSTRATE IN DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECT MATTER AND / OR KNOWLEDGE THAT GOES BEYOND THE BASICS OF THE COURSE WORK. |
