Contents
THE COURSE AIMS TO EXAMINE EVENTS AND PROCESSES IN CONTEMPORARY HISTORY FROM THE SPECIFIC PERSPECTIVE OF POLITICAL-INSTITUTIONAL HISTORY AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS. STARTING FROM THE AGE OF THE GREAT REVOLUTIONS OF THE LATE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY, THE FORMATION OF THE NATION-STATE AND ITS DIFFUSION IN POST-REVOLUTIONARY EUROPE WILL BE STUDIED IN PARTICULAR. STRONG ATTENTION WILL BE DEVOTED IN PARALLEL BOTH TO THE TRANSFORMATIONS OF THE BRITISH MODEL AND TO THE FORMATION OF AMERICAN DEMOCRACY IN THE FIRST DECADES OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY. CONSIDERING 1848 AS A WATERSHED IN EUROPEAN HISTORY, EMPHASIS WILL BE PLACED ON THE DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE PROCESSES OF ITALIAN AND GERMAN UNIFICATION. WITH THE FORMATION OF THE BISMARCKIAN AUTHORITARIAN MODEL AND THE GERMAN POWER STATE, WE ENTER A NEW PHASE (THE SO-CALLED 'ARMED PEACE') OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS. A SECOND PART OF THE COURSE IS DEDICATED TO THE GREAT WAR (1914-1918) AS THE START OF THE PROCESS OF THE STATEHOOD OF EUROPEAN SOCIETIES AND THUS AS THE BEGINNING OF THE "ERA OF TYRANNIES". A FINAL PART WILL BE DEVOTED TO THE COLD WAR THAT SUCCEEDED THE SECOND WORLD WAR (1939-1945). IT WILL BE ANALYSED MAINLY FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE DIVISION OF EUROPE INTO TWO BLOCS UNTIL THE COLLAPSE OF THE BERLIN WALL IN 1989.

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES THE INTRODUCTION TO THE MAIN ISSUES OF CONTEMPORARY HISTORY AND SOME MOMENTS OF REFLECTION AND DEBATE WITH THE STUDENTS AT THE END OF EACH TEACHING BLOCK.
SPACE WILL ALSO BE GIVEN TO THE PROBLEM OF SOURCES, METHODOLOGY AND HISTORIOGRAPHY. WITHIN EACH TEACHING BLOCK, THE LECTURES ARE ORGANISED AS FOLLOWS: IN THE FIRST HOUR, THE PROFESSOR PRESENTS THE TOPIC AND ITS HISTORIOGRAPHICAL ASPECTS; IN THE SECOND HOUR, MORE SPACE IS GIVEN TO DIALOGUE WITH THE STUDENTS TO CONSOLIDATE THEIR ACQUISITIONS.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM INCLUDES THE CONDUCTION OF A FINAL WRITTEN EXAM ON THE TOPICS COVERED AND PROVIDED IN THE STUDY PROGRAM
