THE COURSE INTENDS TO PROVIDE A SPECIALIZED THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL PREPARATION OF RESEARCH METHODS AND STRATEGIES IN THE FIELD OF LANDSCAPE ARCHAEOLOGY AND ANCIENT TOPOGRAPHY: AND THE MAIN METHODOLOGIES OF HISTORICAL AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH; THE ROADS NETWORK OF THE ROMAN AGE: LANDSCAPE TRANSFORMATIONS, SETTLEMENT DYNAMICS, CULTURAL CHANGES; THE TOOLS AND UPDATED BIBLIOGRAPHY FOR THE STUDY OF THE ROADS OF ANCIENT ITALY; THE ROAD ENGINEERING WORKS BEST DOCUMENTED BY RECENT STUDIES; CASE STUDIES OF IDENTIFICATION OF COURSES AND ROAD NAMES. |

THE COURSE IS ORGANIZED IN TWO MODULES. I MODULE INSIGHT WILL BE PROVIDED ON THE HISTORY OF THE DISCIPLINE, ON METHODS AND STRATEGIES OF APPROACH AND STUDY OF LANDSCAPES AND SYSTEMS OF ORGANISATION, POPULATION AND EXPLOITATION OF TERRITORIAL RESOURCES: FROM THE EXAMINATION OF ANCIENT SOURCES TO THE TREATMENT OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL RECORD THROUGH GIS APPLICATIONS, TO SYSTEMS AND METHODS OF CLASSIFICATION AND QUANTIFICATION OF MOBILE FINDS. THE ISSUES WILL BE EXPLORED THROUGH THE ANALYSIS OF SPECIFIC MULTI-STRATIFIED REGIONAL CONTEXTS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN BASIN,WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE TERRITORIES CROSSED BY THE VIA APPIA CLAUDIA. II MODULE KNOWLEDGE WILL BE PROVIDED ON: 1) PURPOSE, POLICY AND ACTORS OF ROAD CONSTRUCTION FROM THE 5TH CENTURY BC TO THE IMPERIAL AGE; PUBLIC ROADS, COLONIZATION AND LAND ASSIGNMENTS. THE TRANSFORMATIONS OF THE LANDSCAPE AND OF THE PERCEPTION OF SPACE INDUCED BY THE ANCIENT ROAD SYSTEM. 2) THE ROAD NETWORK OF ROMAN ITALY. HISTORICAL CARTOGRAPHY. BARRINGTON ATLAS, DIGITAL ATLAS OF ROMAN EMPIRE, MAPPING PAST SOCIETIES. 3) TYPOLOGY AND EVOLUTION OF ROMAN ROAD PAVEMENTS. IDENTIFICATION OF AN ANCIENT ROAD: ARCHAEOLOGICAL MARKERS, ANCIENT CARTOGRAPHY, PHOTO-INTERPRETATION. ROADS PALIMPSESTES: VIA AEMILIA, VIA CAMPANA/PORTUENSE, VIA LAURENTINA, VIA IULIA AUGUSTA, VIA APPIA AT THE PASS OF ITRI 4) ROAD ENGINEERING WORKS. HYDRAULIC WORKS: THE VIA APPIA IN THE PONTINE PLAIN, THE ARZERÒN DELLA REGINA, THE ROAD FROM PARMA TO BRIXELLUM. TERRACES AND SUBSTRUCTURES: THE VIA FLAMINIA. CUTS, HOLLOW WAYS, GALLERIES, VIAE EXCISAE. BRIDGES AND VIADUCTS, SOLID BRIDGES, EARTHEN BRIDGES. 5) ROAD EPIGRAPHY. MILESTONES AND OTHER ROAD EPIGRAPHS: MILESTONE OF TONGRES, TABULAE DOLABELLAE, STADIASMUS PATARENSIS, ELOGIUM OF POLLA, INSCRIPTION OF FICULEA. ROADS AND SELF-REPRESENTATION: NECROPOLIS, HONORARY ARCHES. THE LATIN LEXICON OF THE ROAD. 6) CARTOGRAPHIC SOURCES. THE TABULA PEUTINGERIANA: UPDATES ON ORIGIN, STRUCTURE AND CHRONOLOGY. WRITTEN SOURCES. ITINERARIUM ANTONINI, ANONYMUS RAVENNAS, GUIDO: PROBLEMS AND PRECAUTIONS. 7) THE NAMING OF PUBLIC ROADS: THE CASE OF VIA ANNIA; THE NEW VIA ANNIA; THE ANNIA-POPILIA. 8) POST STATIONS AND SETTLEMENT DYNAMICS TRIGGERED BY ROAD CONSTRUCTION. |

THE COURSE TAKES PLACE IN THE FIRST SEMESTER AND CONSISTS OF 60 HOURS OF LECTURES. IT IS DIVIDED INTO TWO MODULES, BOTH OF 30 HOURS. THE FIRST MODULE CONSISTS OF 25 HOURS OF LESSONS AND 5 HOURS OF SEMINARS. THE TEACHING TOOLS SUPPORT ARE POWER POINT PROJECTIONS, VISITS AND WORKSHOPS. |

ORAL EXAMINATION. THE GRADE IS GIVEN IN THIRTIETHS: THE HIGHEST GRADE (30 CUM LAUDE) IS GIVEN WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES FULL KNOWLEDGE OF THE CONTENTS, THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL SKILLS, AND CRITICAL ABILITY TO ESTABLISH LOGICAL AND CHRONOLOGICAL LINKS BETWEEN THE TOPICS DISCUSSED. |
