Objectives
AIMS
THE COURSE AIMS ARE: TO ILLUSTRATE THE MAIN THEORIES AND METHODS PROPOSED IN THE LITERATURE FOR THE ANALYSIS OF SOCIAL NETWORKS, TO ACQUIRE SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE IN THE COLLECTION OF DATA IN THE PRESENCE OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF NETWORKS, TO PROVIDE INTERPRETATIONS OF THE SOCIAL PHENOMENA ANALYZED AND TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE USE OF SPECIFIC SOFTWARE FOR THE ANALYSIS OF NETWORK DATA IN DIFFERENT APPLICATION FIELDS.
THEORIES RELATED TO KEY CONCEPTS, SUCH AS HOMOPHILY, SOCIAL CIRCLES, SMALL WORLDS, STRENGTH OF WEAK TIES, TRIADIC CENSUS AND NETWORK CLOSURE, STRUCTURAL HOLES AND BROKER ROLES ARE DEEPENED TO UNDERSTAND THE NETWORK STRUCTURES DEFINED FOR THE STUDY OF VARIOUS SOCIAL PHENOMENA.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND NETWORK STRUCTURES IN DIFFERENT APPLICATION FIELDS, TO USE STATISTICAL TOOLS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF NETWORK DATA AND TO APPLY THESE TECHNIQUES IN PRESENCE OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF NETWORKS.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT WILL TRANSLATE INTO THE ABILITY TO ANALYZE NETWORK DATA FROM SECONDARY AND PRIMARY SOURCES, PROVIDING A CRITICAL INTERPRETATION OF THE SOCIAL PHENOMENA INVESTIGATED.

AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO DRAW UP SYNTHETIC REPORTS FOR THE DESCRIPTION AND INTERPRETATION OF THE PHENOMENA UNDER STUDY.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE, THROUGH TEXTS OR VIRTUAL TOOLS, THE RESULTS OF PROCESSING CARRIED OUT FOR THE ANALYSIS OF THE PHENOMENA UNDER STUDY.

LEARNING ABILITY
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS AND RESOURCES FOR THE ANALYSIS OF NETWORK DATA USING THE RELEVANT SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE.
Prerequisites
STATISTICS
Contents
THE COURSE FOCUSES ON:

- MAIN THEORIES DEVELOPED FOR THE ANALYSIS OF SOCIAL NETWORKS
- CLASSIFICATION OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF NETWORK
- METHODS FOR THE COLLECTION OF NETWORK DATA
- METHODS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF NETWORK DATA
- EXAMPLES OF APPLICATIONS IN SOCIAL FIELD
- SOFTWARE FOR SOCIAL NETWORK ANALYSIS
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS INCLUDES CLASSROOM LECTURES, SEMINARS, AND LABORATORY SESSIONS.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF TWO PARTS: A WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL INTERVIEW.

THE WRITTEN TEST AIMS AT ASSESSING THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND THE ANALYTICAL INSTRUMENTS. THE WRITTEN TEST TAKES 60 MINUTES AND IT IS STRUCTURED IN EXERCISES ABOUT THE TOPICS DEVELOPED DURING THE LECTURES.

THE ORAL INTERVIEW TAKES AROUND 20 MINUTES WITH A DISCUSSION ON THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL TOPICS PRESENTED DURING THE LECTURES TO ASSESS THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND THE ABILITY AND THE QUALITY OF ORAL EXPOSITION.
