Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO IMPROVE:
-KNOWLEDGE OF THE LANGUAGE SYSTEM (PHONOLOGY, MORPHOLOGY, SYNTAX AND SPECIALIZED VOCABULARY).
-UNDERSTANDING OF THE MECHANISMS UNDERLYING THE FORMATION OF SPECIFIC GRAMMATICAL PATTERNS
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
-APPLICATION OF GRAMMATICAL KNOWLEDGE TO BASIC LANGUAGE SKILLS (READING, WRITING, LISTENING AND SPEAKING)
- ABILITY TO IDENTIFY THE PURPOSES AND FUNCTIONS OF SOME TYPES OF TEXT (ESSAY, ARTICLE, REVIEW).
-ABILITY TO IDENTIFY AND UNDERSTAND THE INFORMATION STRUCTURE OF A TEXT.
-ABILITY TO READ WITH RIGHT PRONUNCIATION, RHYTHM AND INTONATION.
-ABILITY TO PRODUCE (WRITTEN AND ORAL) TEXTS ABOUT TOPICS CONSISTENT WITH STUDENTS’ CURRICULUM AND PROFESSIONAL PROFILE.
COMMUNICATIVE SKILLS
-ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE CLEARLY THROUGH LEXICAL AND GRAMMATICAL CHOICES, THE ESSENTIAL CONTENTS OF A SPECIALIZED TEXT.
-ABILITY TO INTERACT IN SHORT AND SIMPLE CONVERSATIONS ON TOPICS ABOUT PERSONAL, SOCIAL OR PROFESSIONAL INTEREST.

Prerequisites
- KNOWLEDGE OF GENERAL ENGLISH (3 CREDITS-LABORATORIO DI LINGUA INGLESE)
-KNOWLEDGE OF FUNDAMENTALS OF ENGLISH PHONOLOGY, MORPHOLOGY AND SYNTAX (B1 LEVEL OF THE CEFR CORRESPONDING TO THE FOLLOWING DESCRIPTION: [THE SPEAKER] "CAN UNDERSTAND THE MAIN POINTS OF CLEAR STANDARD INPUT ON FAMILIAR MATTERS REGULARLY ENCOUNTERED IN WORK, SCHOOL/UNIVERSITY, LEISURE, ETC. CAN DEAL WITH MOST SITUATIONS LIKELY TO ARISE WHILST TRAVELLING IN AN AREA WHERE THE LANGUAGE IS SPOKEN. CAN PRODUCE SIMPLE CONNECTED TEXT ON TOPICS WHICH ARE FAMILIAR OR OF PERSONAL INTEREST. CAN DESCRIBE EXPERIENCES AND EVENTS, DREAMS, HOPES AND AMBITIONS AND BRIEFLY GIVE REASONS AND EXPLANATIONS FOR OPINIONS AND PLANS".

THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO THREE MODULES.
MODULE I: GRAMMAR REVISION
- ACTIVE/PASSIVE VOICE; REVISION AND USE OF VERB TENSES.
-INFORMATION FLOW WITHIN TEXTS; LINKING WORDS; ARTICLES.
MODULE II: PRONUNCIATION AND INTONATION
-VOWEL AND CONSONANT SOUNDS; DIPHTHONGS.
-WORD STRESS PATTERNS (MONO-, BI-, PLURISYLLABIC WORDS ).
-SENTENCE STRESS AND INTONATION.
-SOUNDS IN CONNECTED SPEECH AND CONSONANT CLUSTERS.
MODULE III: READING AND LISTENING COMPREHENSION
-LINGUISTIC AND CULTURAL ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT TEXT TYPES ABOUT SPECIALISED TOPICS.
-LISTENING ACTIVITIES BASED ON AUTHENTIC AUDIO/VIDEO MATERIALS.

Verification of learning
LEARNING OUTCOMES WILL BE TESTED THROUGH TWO WRITTEN PROGRESS TESTS ON: 1. GRAMMAR AND PHONOLOGY OF ENGLISH (ASSESSED THROUGH MULTIPLE CHOICE EXERCISES); 2. READING COMPREHENSION AND ANALYSIS OF A SPECIALISED TEXT (ASSESSED THROUGH WH-QUESTIONS). THE ORAL TEST INCLUDES: 1. LISTENING COMPREHENSION OF A MONOLOGUE (ASSESSED THROUGH A MULTIPLE CHOICE EXERCISE), 2. LISTENING COMPREHENSION OF A DIALOGUE (ASSESSED THROUGH A FILLING-THE-GAPS EXERCISE), 3. ORAL PRESENTATION (IN PAIRS) ON ONE OR MORE TOPICS DISCUSSED DURING THE COURSE. IT IS NECESSARY TO PASS THE WRITTEN TESTS IN ORDER TO TAKE THE ORAL TEST AND COMPLETE THE EXAM. PROGRESS TESTS UNDER THE PASSING GRADE OF 18 CAN BE RECOVERED ALONG WITH THE FOLLOWING PROGRESS TEST. LEARNING OBJECTIVES ARE ATTESTED THROUGH A STANDARDISED SCORE OUT OF 30. THE SCORE A STUDENT NEEDS TO ACHIEVE A PASSING GRADE WILL ALWAYS BE 18.
