KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING -KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH PHONOLOGY, MORPHOLOGY, SYNTAX AND SPECIALIZED VOCABULARY. -UNDERSTANDING OF THE MECHANISMS UNDERLYING THE FORMATION OF SPECIFIC GRAMMATICAL PATTERNS APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING -APPLICATION OF GRAMMATICAL KNOWLEDGE TO BASIC LANGUAGE SKILLS (READING, WRITING, LISTENING AND SPEAKING) - ABILITY TO IDENTIFY THE PURPOSES AND FUNCTIONS OF SOME TYPES OF TEXT (ESSAY, NOVEL, REVIEW). -KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING -KNOWLEDGE OF THE LANGUAGE SYSTEM (PHONOLOGY, MORPHOLOGY, ABILITY TO IDENTIFY AND UNDERSTAND THE INFORMATION STRUCTURE OF A TEXT. -ABILITY TO READ WITH RIGHT PRONUNCIATION, RHYTHM AND INTONATION. -ABILITY TO SET (WRITTEN AND ORAL) TEXTS ABOUT TOPICS CONSISTENT WITH STUDENTS’ CURRICULUM AND PROFESSIONAL PROFILE. THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO THREE MODULES. MODULE I: GRAMMAR REVISION -SUBJECT/VERB AGREEMENT; SIMPLE CLAUSES (S/V/O/C); ACTIVE/PASSIVE VOICE; REVISION AND USE OF VERB TENSES. -INFORMATION FLOW WITHIN TEXTS; USING SIMPLE AND COMPLEX NOUN PHRASES. -EXPRESSING LOGICAL LINKS: LINKING WORDS; SIMPLE AND COMPOUND SENTENCES. MODULE II: PRONUNCIATION AND INTONATION -VOWEL AND CONSONANT SOUNDS; DIPHTHONGS. -WORD STRESS PATTERNS (MONO-, BI-, PLURISYLLABIC WORDS ). -SENTENCE STRESS AND INTONATION. -SOUNDS IN CONNECTED SPEECH AND CONSONANT CLUSTERS. MODULE III: READING AND LISTENING COMPREHENSION -LINGUISTIC AND CULTURAL ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT TEXT TYPES ABOUT SPECIALISED TOPICS. -LISTENING ACTIVITIES BASED ON AUTHENTIC AUDIO/VIDEO MATERIALS. |

THE LEARNING OUTCOMES WILL BE TESTED THROUGH THREE WRITTEN PROGRESS TESTS ON: 1. SYNTACTIC AND MORPHOLOGICAL ANALYSES, PHONOLOGY OF ENGLISH (ASSESSED THROUGH MULTIPLE CHOICE AND SEMI-STRUCTURED EXERCISES); 2. READING COMPREHENSION AND ANALYSIS OF A LITERARY OR ARGUMENTATIVE TEXT (ASSESSED THROUGH WH-QUESTIONS). THE ORAL TEST INCLUDES: 1. LISTENING COMPREHENSION OF A MONOLOGUE (ASSESSED THROUGH A MULTIPLE CHOICE EXERCISE, FINAL MARK 5/5), 2. LISTENING COMPREHENSION OF A DIALOGUE (ASSESSED THROUGH A FILLING-THE-GAPS EXERCISE, FINAL MARK: 5/5), 3. ORAL PRESENTATION (INDIVIDUALLY OR IN GROUPS) ON ONE OR MORE TOPICS DISCUSSED DURING THE COURSE (6 MIN.+QUESTION TIME). ASSESSMENT GRID FOR SPEAKING TEST (20/20): FOR EACH ANALYTICAL CRITERION STUDENTS WILL BE ASSIGNED A MARK RANGING FROM 1 TO 5. A. GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY, B. PRONUNCIATION, C. DISCOURSE MANAGEMENT, D. INTERACTIVE COMMUNICATION. IT IS NECESSARY TO PASS THE WRITTEN TESTS IN ORDER TO TAKE THE ORAL TEST AND COMPLETE THE EXAM. PROGRESS TESTS UNDER THE PASSING GRADE OF 18 CAN BE RECOVERED ALONG WITH THE FOLLOWING PROGRESS TEST. LEARNING OBJECTIVES ARE ATTESTED THROUGH A STANDARDISED SCORE OUT OF 30. THE SCORE A STUDENT NEEDS TO ACHIEVE A PASSING GRADE WILL ALWAYS BE 18. |
