THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS THE ACQUISITION OF WRITTEN AND ORAL SKILLS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CORRESPONDING TO THE B1 LEVEL OF THE CEFR WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO SPECIFIC AREAS OF STUDY (HISTORY-LITERATURE-PHILOLOGY) THROUGH THE LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF SPECIALIZED TEXTS. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE STUDENT WILL: - ACQUIRE THE PHONOLOGICAL SYSTEM OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND UNDERSTAND ITS DISTINCTIVE ELEMENTS IN COMPARISON WITH THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE - KNOW THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF BOTH INFLECTIONAL AND DERIVATIONAL MORPHOLOGY - ACQUIRE THE MAIN SYNTACTIC STRUCTURES OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE - KNOW THE MAIN PURPOSES AND FUNCTIONS OF SPECIFIC TEXT TYPES (ESSAY, ARTICLE, REVIEW) - KNOW THE MAIN TRADITIONAL AND ELECTRONIC REFERENCE SOURCES - UNDERSTAND THE MECHANISMS UNDERLYING THE FORMATION OF SPECIFIC LANGUAGE STRUCTURES APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - RECOGNIZE AND REPEAT THE PHONEMES OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE - IDENTIFY THE MEANING AND SYNTACTIC FUNCTION OF WORDS IN A SENTENCE THROUGH THEIR MORPHOLOGICAL STRUCTURE - IDENTIFY THE SALIENT ELEMENTS OF A WRITTEN AND ORAL TEXT FROM DIFFERENT GENRES - IDENTIFY AND UNDERSTAND THE INFORMATION STRUCTURE OF A TEXT - CREATE, PRESENT AND DISCUSS, ALSO ORALLY, WRITTEN PAPERS ON A SPECIFIC TOPIC - USE THE MAIN TRADITIONAL AND ELECTRONIC REFERENCE SOURCES MAKING JUDGMENTS THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - COMPARE THE DIFFERENT HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXTS OF THE SOURCE LANGUAGE AND THE TARGET LANGUAGE - SELECT AND USE DIFFERENT SOURCES OF INFORMATION IN ENGLISH, INCLUDING WEBSITES - CONSTRUCTIVELY DISCUSS SPECIALISED TOPICS IN ENGLISH COMMUNICATION THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - COMMUNICATE CLEARLY, THROUGH APPROPRIATE LEXICAL AND GRAMMATICAL CHOICES, THE ESSENTIAL CONTENTS OF SPECIALISED TEXTS - INTERACT IN SHORT AND SIMPLE CONVERSATIONS ON TOPICS OF PERSONAL, SOCIAL OR PROFESSIONAL INTEREST LEARNING SKILLS THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - EFFECTIVELY USE THE MAIN TRADITIONAL AND ELECTRONIC REFERENCE SOURCES - CARRY OUT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET COMPLEX, SPECIALIZED TEXTS - KEEP ON WITH LIFE-LONG LEARNING ACTIVITIES, USING TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE |

LEARNING OUTCOMES WILL BE TESTED THROUGH TWO WRITTEN TESTS ON: 1. GRAMMAR AND PHONOLOGY OF ENGLISH (ASSESSED THROUGH MULTIPLE CHOICE EXERCISES); 2. READING COMPREHENSION AND ANALYSIS OF A SPECIALISED TEXT (ASSESSED THROUGH WH-QUESTIONS). THE ORAL TEST INCLUDES: 1. LISTENING COMPREHENSION OF A MONOLOGUE (ASSESSED THROUGH A MULTIPLE CHOICE EXERCISE, FINAL MARK 5/5), 2. LISTENING COMPREHENSION OF A DIALOGUE (ASSESSED THROUGH A FILLING-THE-GAPS EXERCISE, FINAL MARK: 5/5), 3. ORAL PRESENTATION (INDIVIDUALLY OR IN GROUPS) ON ONE OR MORE TOPICS DISCUSSED DURING THE COURSE (6 MIN.+QUESTION TIME). ASSESSMENT GRID FOR SPEAKING TEST (20/20): FOR EACH ANALYTICAL CRITERION STUDENTS WILL BE ASSIGNED A MARK RANGING FROM 1 TO 5. A. GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY, B. PRONUNCIATION, C. DISCOURSE MANAGEMENT, D. INTERACTIVE COMMUNICATION. IT IS NECESSARY TO PASS THE WRITTEN TESTS IN ORDER TO TAKE THE ORAL TEST AND COMPLETE THE EXAM. PROGRESS TESTS UNDER THE PASSING GRADE OF 18 CAN BE RECOVERED ALONG WITH THE FOLLOWING PROGRESS TEST. LEARNING OBJECTIVES ARE ATTESTED THROUGH A STANDARDISED SCORE OUT OF 30.
